Rosaline (2022)
Ridiculous everything
This has a half baked plot with forced lines and such an irritating main protagonist. Kept hoping for a unique twist, spoiler alert--there isn't one. Instead it was all so predictably bland. Felt like a cheap knock off of a Knights Tale, but without the humour. The only reason this got any stars is because the music was well chosen. Not impressed with the flubbed attempts at mixing modern English and Shakespearean English, very clunky. The main protagonist was so irritating that even by the end of the movie I was hoping she'd get dumped into the water and have her fear of fish put to the test. Then maybe there would have been some point in making such a big deal out of it in the beginning.
La templanza (2021)
Eye strain
I'm not sure who was in charge of lighting for this series but it's so dark. I'm 4 episodes in and having eye strain (I have 20/20 vision). Trying to watch this involves squinting and hoping I can guess the character based off the horrible dubbed voices. I have nonissue with wanting a natural approach but candle placement was horrid. The plot lines leave lots of loops with multiple underdeveloped side characters who don't seem to help move the plot along. This is definitely a slow moving plot, think Wallander paced.
Dripping in Chocolate (2012)
Australian lifetime
Sex addict, chocolate, murder. Right out of lifetime. Biggest surprise was the ending.
Mulan (2020)
It's Mulan
Like most people I've been anxiously anticipating this movie for months. I came in with no expectations other than hearing there was no Mushu and no musical numbers. Instead of remaking the animated film into a live action movie Disney chose to reimagine the story of Mulan.
I see a lot of complaints from unhappy folks who wanted a remake not a reimagining. If that's what you're expecting, skip this version and pop on the cartoon.
This reimagining is not fast paced. Far more methodical and pretty much all drama with little comic relief. Reminded me more of watching old war movies, which is pretty spot on for Mulan-a film about a female warrior. I am fine with the change in love interest, far more practical to find love with an equal instead of a commanding officer. The action sequences are more in line with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, etc. Aligned with Chinese cinema so that makes sense too.
I've read a lot of complaints about characters not getting much development through the movie-reminder this is called Mulan. Hint hint, wink wink-it is about her development. So again made sense while I was watching.
Favorites: the scenery. Breath taking, beautiful landscapes.
Less favorite-as a war story about Mulan there is no way I'd let my young nieces and nephews watch this. There's a reason it's PG-13. Not for young kids, they can keep watching the lovable, funny cartoon. Also the Phoenix seemed very unnecessary. Without it the plot would have still been quite a full circle story.
Prime Suspect 1973 (2017)
Standard procedural crime show
Acting from the main characters was good. Have just enough detail to make you want to tune into the next episode. Didn't care for the unnecessarily strong profanity
Bluey (2018)
Creatice, funny, quick binge
I was pretty skeptical when my little nieces and nephews wanted to watch this show about dogs. Gee, have I been missing out! The humor is spot on. The writers are super creative. And now 4 grown adults with no kids around binge watch 8 minute episodes!!!
Emma. (2020)
Simply a delight
Bill Nighy was perfection. I dismissed the music score before leaving the theatre. Emma is at once frustratingly aristocratic and also naive. This adaptation captures so well Austen's ability to parody class differences primarily in attitudes in a way that isa both moving and hilarious. I enjoyed every moment as I trust you will also!
Beecham House (2019)
Engaging period drama
You'll note I didn't call this a documentary, that it is not. I read so many reviews prior to binge watching the entire series over 2 evenings. Each negative review seemed to think this was an historical documentary. Instead this is engaging period drama. Cinematography wise the footage is breathtaking. The cast was clearly thoughtfully selected.
There are multiple central figures to the story so if you're expecting to watch only 1 grow through the episodes you'll be disappointed. Instead there are no fewer than 10 characters like became quite vested in. Sure family drama isn't new, however the angle Chadha explores is fresh.
I'm disappointed Beechem House isn't slated for a second season yet, I do hope PBS viewership can tip the scales. I need a 2and season for closure after the riveting finale!
