What's the Worst That Could Happen? (2001)
Good film
Martin Lawrence plays Kevin, a professional thief. Danny DeVito is Max, a wealthy business man. Kevin is caught stealing from Max, who in turn steals a ring from Kevin. Kevin wants revenge, and will steal other things to get back the ring.
I read this book and surprisingly, the film sticks relatively close to it. John Leguizamo is wasted in this film -- he could have done a lot more. I think that Mr. Lawrence, not only starring but being executive producer, controlled too much of the script. There was too much of Kevin and not enough of the peripheral players. Like Larry Miller, who played Max's head of security. Here was another talented comedian wasted. And I liked the flamboyant detective played by John Fichtner, but even his role was limited.
I would give this 2 1/2 stars out of 4.
Meng long guo jiang (1972)
Unedited it would be great
I would love to see this film in its original form. The video version I saw made little sense. Bruce Lee comes from Hong Kong to Rome protect his friend's niece from bad guys who want her Chinese restaurant. Why they want her restaurant is beyond me.
The fight scenes are spectacular, but beyond that this film was little more than a travelogue of Rome. I must admit, Bruce Lee was a better actor than I thought, but his directing style left a lot to be desired. Why do a lot of Hong Kong film makers love the zoom shot? And the sets where the fights took place were obvious sound stages. Especially where Bruce fights a very young Chuck Norris. Watch it on a rainy Sunday afternoon when nothing else is on.
Payback (1999)
Fun!
Porter (Mel Gibson) is a crook who gets double crossed by an associate and his wife. The rest of the film deals with Porter trying to get his share of the money back. I liked this film a lot. The author of the book, Richard Stark (aka Donald Westlake) is one of my favorite authors. Stark writes books about a character named Parker (also without a first name) who is a brilliant crook but always seems to get tangled up with the wrong people, ie other crooks. Mel Gibson acts very well in this film, I was also surprised by Kris Kristofferson's acting ability, and Lucy Liu is the "comic relief" as a dominatrix. The plot twists are fun, and kept me on the edge of my seat, and I also liked some of the editing, which showed three scenes being played out simultaneously, like what we are led to believe is a three way phone call, but it really isn't. A fun ride, kind of violent, brainless entertainment.
Hannibal (2001)
A Lot of Fun!
I saw this the other night and I thought it was a lot of fun. It's hard not to think of Silence of the Lambs while watching this, but this film stands on its own. A. Hopkins is excellent, as always, Juliette Moore does an adequate job taking over the role that Jodie Foster played ten years ago, and I especially liked Giancarlo Gianni as the Italian policeman. Ray Liotta was fine (he's been in lots of stuff these days, hasn't he?) and Gary Oldman was a little too weird and sometimes hard to understand. I loved the scenes of Florence, Italy, Mr. Scott gave the film the right creepy atmosphere. Be warned, though, this is NOT a date movie!
