Shot Caller (2017)
Incredibly powerful, seemingly authentic
I haven't been to prison, but I understand this film was thoroughly researched. It is a very powerful, engrossing story and performance by all involved. Bleak as can possibly be, about how prison can drag you down for life, but it's a shame this film didn't get wider exposure and publicity. At least I had never heard of it til I stumbled across it on Netflix. A real gem, though a dark one.
Clara (1999)
A beautiful, rich short film, beautifully produced.
I've seen a lot of short films at film festivals, etc., and often the directors describe them as a "calling card" to get a full-length feature deal. And sometimes they even say this is a short version of a full-length feature I'd like to produce. Indeed, many short films now are beautifully produced, in 35mm, with very good production values. However, "Clara" really DOES give you the feel of a full-length feature, just boiled down to its essentials, or at least to one aspect of what the full-length feature might be. I personally prefer comedies, thrillers and action films, rather than character studies, but this film (without any of the above elements) was very engaging, and so honestly directed and acted, that it was totally engaging! And it happens to deal with issues of war, remembering, and forgiveness which are so gripping--and in a wonderfully insightful, artful way. And the look -- the production values -- were as rich and fabulous as the writing and acting. A real thrill to watch. Three cheers and five stars for the writer/director, Helga Oswald! Long may she write and direct!
