Kick-Ass (2010)
Nice!!!
Kick Ass is one of few films that are adapted from comic book and actually did a good job. Three of Tim Burton's Batman plus two of Christopher Nolan's, X2: X-Men United, Iron Man, Spider-Man 2, Sin City are also among those few.Superman Returns was so-so, Hulks are okay, and Fantastic Four is not bad. Wolverine, Catwoman, Wanted, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and many more fall into a miserable category.
The humor in Kick Ass kicks on the right places, while the actions are not half-hearted. Even though the title hero is Aaron Johnston's Kick Ass, the real kick ass is definitely Chloe Moretz who played Hit Girl. She's tough, furious,foul-mouthed, and yes...she's eleven.
This film is going to be a classic.
Watchmen (2009)
Watcmen is impossible to film
I'm a big fan of the graphic novel. At first I had a doubt that Watchmen won't turn up to be a great big screen adaptation. After I watched it, I thought it was pretty decent. There are 12 chapters in the novel. Each chapter gives a detailed exploration about each character and their parts in the bigger plot, as well as the point of views from other supporting characters.
I know it would be very difficult to translate the complexity of the book into the film, but the film itself wasn't that bad. The storytelling way in the film was a bit messy because there were so many parts of the book that were cut from the film. Those parts actually held the connection between each sub-plot tighter. And of course there weren't an in depth approach to each of the character. Leaving their personalities to be floating on the screen.
But it was still enjoyable to watch, with great special effect, fighting scenes, and definitely the soundtracks.
Star Trek (2009)
trekkies surely won't be disappointed
After being disappointed by the miserable Wolverine, I didn't have that high hope on Star Trek. But after I saw this film, I left the cinema with a big smile on my face.
The plot is new and a bit twisted, in a good and refreshing way. The characters are very well portrayed by the actors. Kirk is such an annoying jerk who happens to be cool at the same time, while Spock is originally calm and calculating until he embraces his emotions. Sulu, Uhura,Chekov, McCoy, and Scott really take parts on the story instead of being just as supporting characters. The film keeps the humor going on until the end, and the ending is just classic. It is also the first apocalyptic film that takes place in San Francisco without destroying the Golden Gate bridge.
Trekkies and non-trekkies will enjoy this film
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
flows wonderfully
Sometimes you don't need an over-dramatic climax to make a good film. The story flows wonderfully and each of the characters are equally fair amount of spotlight. Each of them feels reachable and believable. The music is just fantastic. The scenery, paintings, and photography are just beautiful. Chrstina is dreamy, free, and spontaneous while Vicky is realistic, hard-headed yet longing at the same time. Javier Bardem as Juan Antonio is definitely sexy and pitiful while Penelope Cruz really deserved the Oscar she won for her performance in this film. This film will leave a smile on your face. A truly entertaining, light-hearted Woody Allen's creation.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
uuugghh...not THAT good, but not that bad either
I'm a comic book geek, and every time I saw films made by Marvel I wondered what did Marvel executives such as Stan Lee or Avi Arad think about their masterpiece titles got translated into so so films. I watched this film with a friend who never read the comic books and only watched the X-Men Trilogy. He thought this film was so-so.
I admitted there were some scenes that were really cool to watch, for example the fight with Deadpool and when Gambit first showed up. But in some scenes the special effect were so obvious and it was really irritating. And Oh My God!! I think they over-exaggerated Deadpool's power. I know he's Marvel's number one mercenary and stuff. But hey, swords coming out of his knuckles? Laser eyes? Oh...puhleaseee... And turning Emma Frost into Silver Fox's sister? I don't think a lot of X-Men readers would appreciate this.
But David Henney and Ryan Reynolds gave a memorable performances although they didn't have that many screen times.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
it's a hmmmm....
"Hmmmm..." that was my thought when I watched this film. Del Toro is a brilliant director and Hellboy is a brilliant comic. But, the film felt like it lacked a certain "umph!" to it, just like the first Hellboy. Del Toro did a great job with the special effect and cinematography, it was easy on the eyes. But the script and the characterization surely needed some extra works. The story didn't feel that thrilling or even that gripping. The characters are there, but you couldn't exactly you know, like touch them. Each of them basically just stand there with a barely there feeling. Overally this film felt like it's floating. That's the perfect way to describe it, just floating. Not standing firmly on the ground nor soaring in the sky. Just floats.
The Spirit (2008)
cult classic
I have to say this film won't win many moviegoers' hearts out there. Some people might think this film is cheesy, over the top, or just simply ridiculous. The thing is, this film jumps right out from comic book's pages. The scenes and the dialogues are just like watching moving comic book's drawings.
Frank Miller was born to direct this film. I like the way he put the over-the-topness to make a thick comical feeling. It's like watching the modern, noir, and sarcastic version of Adam West's Batman or The Green Hornet. Through all these years comic books have developed some changes to be more realistic, but this film delivers the feeling of old 1940s through 1960s comic books.
This film might won't hit a massive box office, but sure will win its own loyal fans out there.
The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)
disappointing!
The first time I heard about this film, I was expecting a twisted thriller on space like Pitch Black. An "Agatha Christie on space" as my friend said. But it turned out very disappointing. The film was actually a failed Star Wars wannabe. It doesn't have any connection to the first film.
In Pitch Black, it was about bunch of people, HUMAN, got stuck in a deserted planet. In Chronicles of Riddick suddenly they were Necromanger, Furyans, and many other strange fancy space names. It's like giving a Star Wars sequel to the movie Alien. Does not fit.
I couldn't believe that it was David Twohy who wrote the script and directed the film. He did a great job in Pitch Black, but this film fell a long way from Pitch Black. And I still can't believe Judi Dench took part in this film.
Undiscovered (2005)
just for the leading actor
I watched this film because i like the leading actor, and I gotta see him shirtless in this movie. Haha
The film turned out not as bad as I expected, but it's still bad though. About this guy who's struggling to become a singer. Kind of like the male version of Crossroad to me. The story's cheesy, predictable...Hey, what do you expected? Although I kinda like Kip Pardue's character. At least he gave a wacky air onto the story
I'm glad Ashlee Simpson didn't play a major character. Her character doesn't contribute much to the story anyway. It'll go on without her. Except...surprise...surprise...she sang on the end of the movie. The title of the song? Undiscovered of course
Fainaru fantajî sebun adobento chirudoren (2005)
hmmmmmm.....
To be honest, this is one of my favorite movies. But it's not because of the quality of the story. It's merely because of the sense of longing to see your favorite characters in flawless CGI animation.
I'm a FFVII freak and I gotta admit the animation is superb. The character design (new wardrobe for all of them! yay!), music, background, even the citizens look awesome. But the story is so so. It lacks of grip. It would be a great movie if they added some more materials and twist to the story.
I found the story too floaty (it doesn't stand firmly on the ground, it doesn't fly either. it just floats). Lacks of details and somewhat cliché.
Viewer who never played the game might find this movie a bit confusing.
But IT IS A FEAST FOR THE EYES
Sky High (2005)
entertaining
it's a very entertaining family flick that'll give you good laugh.
I think it's quite funny to convert the normal high school situation (you know...the popular crowd and the geeks) into a high school full of super beings. A group of freshmen stuck being sidekicks a K losers in the normal society. Until one of them finally fits in in the hero crowd (the populars). Sound familiar?
Well, at least this film gives a different twist on that.
Come on, you don't have to use your brain to watch this film.
It's Disney's. It's suppose to make you laugh...or smile. Enjoyable to watch over and over again.
