The Bidding Room (2020)
A real afternoon treat!
I have watched all three series of THE BIDDING ROOM with great interest. I love the setting 'in the heart of Yorkshire,' the chat between the seller and Nigel and Simon and, above all, the competitive camaraderie of the 'dodgy' dealers. It is ideal viewing for the older generation and I look forward to further shows in the future. For me, the outstanding dealer is James Gooch: he comes across as cool and intelligent and he loves the quirkier older items. He is the star of the show!
Hitsville: The Making of Motown (2019)
All that talent on show and such a shoddy documentary!
As a life-long Motown fan, I have just watched 'Hitsville--The Making of Motown'' and found it very hard-going! It was a big disappointment for the following reasons:
(1) The sound quality was uneven and unbalanced, making some of the dialogue almost impossible to hear
(2) There were FAR TOO MANY TALKING HEADS when the fabulous music should have done the talking...
(3) Motown boss Berry Gordy hogged the film with his buddy, Smokey Robinson and they quickly became very irritating with their brand of false bonhomie. No wonder several artists wished to leave the Motown label!
(4) The editing was atrocious, with the music being cut in many cases after the first four bars and replaced by boring old Motown moguls who often repeated the same thing ad nauseam
(5) The film was far too long and should have been pared down to 60 minutes of music and 15 minutes of chat.
(6) The same old black music cliches occurred at the end, with the inevitable references to Martin Luther King and the Klu Klux Klan which we have seen so many times before.
(7) No one questioned Gordy's ludicrous move to try to persuade the Supremes to sing middle of the road songs (apart from the girls themselves, of course).
(8) The graphics were an attempt to organise the assembled footage into relevant chunks, but they ended up being a tedious distraction.
BEST BITS!
The music or what we could hear of it.
Watching previously unseen footage
The reminders about the difficulties of touring in that era.
