Demolition Man (1993)
Great Concept Destroyed By Awful Action Sequences (Some Spoilers...Nothing Serious)
In 1996 (three years in the future at the time of the film's release) the great John Spartan (Stallone) apprehends the evil Simon Phoenix (Snipes) in a Los Angeles that has turned into a wasteland. In a world of evil, Simon Phoenix is the worst. During the apprehension of Phoenix, Spartan is falsely accused of killing about 30 hostages. They are both doomed to decades in the newly developed cryo-chamber where they will exist in stasis.
In the year 2032, Simon Phoenix escapes during his parole hearing and goes on a killing spree. Aside from the normal problems that come with the escape of a mass-murderer, the future has become a world of "harmony" where the largest weapon the police carry are "glow-rods" which emit an electrical shock enough to knock someone out. The police cannot handle Phoenix who seems stronger now and also has new abilities to hack computers among other things. So what are the police to do?
Enter John Spartan, the "Demolition Man." In this utopia known as "San Angeles" (Fusion of Santa Monica, Los Angeles, and San Diego), where everything deemed bad is therefore also illegal, John Spartan is humorously out of his element. John Spartan's assimilation into this new world is what makes this film watchable. Helping him with this process is Lt. Lenina Huxley (Bullock), a San Angeles PD officer who is obsessed with 20th century culture.
Throughout the film, we see a large amount of action sequences where not a single bullet connects. I have never seen a more blatant case of "bad guys can't shoot" than in this film. Not only that, but Spartan also appears to hit everything with his ammo but the bad guys. The title of this film allows for entirely too much Hollywood Glitz where things explode for absolutely no reason.
We find out that this society was developed by Dr. Raymond Cocteau (Hawthorne) following a huge earthquake in 2010 (during which Spartan's family was killed). We also learn that he has dastardly intentions to use Phoenix to kill Edgar Friendly (Leary), the leader of the underground people who choose not to live by Cocteau's ideals.
I felt cheated when I finished watching this film, but I couldn't help being enjoyed anyway. Worth watching...once.
Race the Sun (1996)
Awful, just awful
Predictable at every turn. Horrible at every turn. You get hit with a one-two punch of predictable and horrible. Halle Berry isn't even good in this movie. This should have been a spoof of the REAL movie they should have made about this subject. Not like it's a real subject anyway. Awful.
* out of *****
Snatch (2000)
Coolest movie ever...
I can't put into words just how well this movie was made. I was originally surprised to see Brad Pitt in it because at first it seemed like a B movie at a time when Fight Club's popularity was through the roof. The acting done by all the actors in this movie are superb. The directing is superb. The sound...superb. The plot...outstanding. I must say that whoever wrote this movie sure is a funny guy because there are lines in this movie that i would never had thought of in a million years. The only bad thing i noticed about Snatch was it's partial leaving out of important information. So on a scale of -10 to 10...i give Snatch a -5 for the info thing, and plus several million for everything else.
