House M.D. (2004)
Outstanding
I don't like medical shows. Hell, I don't even really like TV shows. This show, however, with it's charismatic, improbable. central character, superbly played by Mr Laurie, just breaks the mold for me. I sort of view the medical aspects being almost a side note, with the central emphasis being a character study of a most unique anti-hero/hero in Dr House. I can binge watch the reruns of this show on a daily basis. Very well written, well acted, with it's leading character so initially unlikeable that he becomes eminently likeable, nay, loveable. I know that seems a cliche but I don't care. Just a great show, this coming from a classic movie nerd.
Michael Clayton (2007)
Criminally underrated
Every once a blue moon a movie hooks me, grabs me, and haunts me. This is one of those films. I won't bother rehashing the plot as other reviewers have done here, you can read the synopsis for yourself - and maybe it seems drab. The film is perfectly executed by it's director and this IS George Clooney's greatest performance. And Tilda Swinton is Tilda Swinton. And Tom Wilkerson is Tom Wilkerson. Those 2 are 2 of our greatest living actors. You will hate the company involved in the lawsuit, but do you hate Swinton's character? She is not your postcard villain. This is a thoroughly involving intelligent thriller that ends ultimately with redemption.
Patricia Gozzi: Sundays and Cybèle Interview (2014)
Nice to see her so many years later
It was interesting to see her discuss 'Sundays and Cybele', though alas, I've never seen the film in it's entirety. What I would really enjoy is to see her discuss 'Rapture', which I have seen several times and is one of my favorite films. She seems to have aged well as she must be in her 60's at the time of this interview.
Rapture (1965)
Beautiful, Sad, Powerful
I had the good fortune of being sick and home from work one day about a month ago, thus having the opportunity to see this film for the first time. It had a haunting effect on me and I was able to see it several more times since then, convincing me it is now among my favorite films of all time. Patricia Gozzi's performance was simply mesmerizing with the other 3 principals also turning in fine work. John Guillermin's direction was masterful and the cinematography gorgeous. It's quite representative of small arthouse type films of the mid-60's era, reminiscent at times of the work of Bergman. Melvin Douglas gives a solid performance as the stern father, Dean Stockwell is fine in his role, and Gunnell Lindblom seductive and equally fine. But it is Miss Gozzi who truly captivates. She truly inhabits her character, bringing her to life with utter believability. The nuance of her facial expressions, her manner and timing, indicate an actress at the very highest level of her art. Whatever the reasons this excellent young actress decided to leave the film industry, the world lost something at her departure. I highly recommend this unfortunately little known masterpiece to anyone who appreciates films of high quality.
