The Undoing (2020)

Suprisingly thrilling and emotional court drama/crime thriller
3 December 2020
HBO yet again delivers with this suprisingly thrilling and emotionally hard-hitting miniseries.

It has the typical matte and muted color scheme of an HBO drama, but that works rather well considering this world and story is far from colorful. A good score from unknowns Sacha and Evgueni Galperine also enhances the ominous and depressive mood of the 6 episodes. Acting performances, while mostly very one-note, are actually quite good, with Hugh Grant's playful tongue in cheek-humor and painfully delivered sadness being the standout. Nicole Kidman, however, is a bit dissapointing as the lead, as she doesn't seem capable of delivering much facial emotion outside of her eyes and slight twitches in bodily language. Donald Sunderland has a massive screen presence but the performance is, as I've said, very one-note (this, of course being an issue on the writing side only).

Speaking of writing, in terms of a murder mystery, the show never really delivers any mystery until the last two episodes. The drama is well-written and compelling but it falls flat as a crime thriller. However, one has to give them the success of the ending, which instills a suprising amount of emotion and uncertainty regarding the outcome. '

All in all, a good watch. HBO continues to deliver with this type of show, and while not without its faults, it brings some serious entertainment.

Best animated show of all time
10 November 2020
Avatar: the last airbender is a clear 10/10 in my book. Endlessly charming, amazing worldbuilding, a plethora of loveable characters that all undergo truly masterfully executed character development, great animation, and a fantastic score. Really, everything you could ever wish for in a show. No real drawbacks at all except for the first season dragging just a little bit too much. Truly the best animated show of all time, and my personal favourite show. Highly recommended!

Electric and exciting depiction of passion and addiction through the eyes of a brilliant Anya Taylor-Joy.
7 November 2020
Surprisingly, "The Queen's Gambit", a show I hadn't heard anything about until I accidentaly stumbled upon it on twitter, has proved to be one of the best pieces of film/tv released in 2020. Filled with amazing performances and displays of artistic excellence from underrated and unrecognized cast & crew, the show quickly pulls you into its very intense and lively world, and doesn't let go for a second.

Lead star Anya Taylor-Joy delivers the best performance of her career with an absolutely electric and very emotionally loaded interpretation of the troubled chess prodigy Elisabeth "Beth" Harmon. She moves and speaks with confidence, weight and charisma unrivaled by most other actors/actresses her age, and manages to convey a large range of emotion, often without uttering a word. Co-stars Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Harry Melling also suprise with two very interesting and unusual performances, that play very well off of Anya Taylor-Joy's cahracter, and it leaves me longing for more.

Writing and directing is great, but the real suprise in terms of crew is the editing ( Michelle Tesoro) and score (Carlos Rafael Rivera). The soundtrack, score, and sound design, while a bit generic at first, really picks up throughout the seven episodes and really shines with its elegance and darkness. The biggest achievement of the series is, however, how it manages to make the interesting but arguably quite boring sport of chess into a nerve-wracking and truly thrilling experience. I believe this is mostly the result of rather masterful editing, but also of the very sparse yet accurate exposition.

All in all, a truly great show that I cannot recommend enough. This is one of those shows you really dont want to miss out on, and we will watch the evolving career of Taylor-Joy with great interest.

The Legend of Korra (2012–2014)
9/10
Must-watch if you like the world of avatar.
27 September 2020
If the original show is a 10 (which it obviously is), "the legend of korra" is a 9. While not ever reaching quite as high as the original, it has the exact same magic. Featuring a bunch of wonderful characters (old and new) and their developments, very well written and interesting villains that, compared to the villains of the original show, all have seriously good motivations.

TLoK's highs never reach the same heights as ATLA, and the lows are considerably lower but this is more than made up for by the many fantastic pieces of world building and really inventive uses of bending. It delves much more into technology and the implications that has for a world of benders, and it's something I personally dislike, but i respect the risk taken and it does allow for some interesting storylines.

All in all, an amazing show. One that i personally think very highly of, but it doesn't nail every episode and stick the landing quite as well as "the last airbender" did. A must-watch for the fans of the Avatar-world. I really want more!

Well-acted, comedic, and heartfelt but too long and slow
3 August 2020
This film was almost exactly what i went into it expecting. Really well-acted by everyone involved, very funny, relatable, and sometimes extremely heartfelt. It was all that, but the movie suffers a bit from dragging too much at times and It would probably benefit from a 15-20 minute shorter runtime. But all in all, a really nice film!

Underrated and very misunderstood masterpiece
18 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm gonna start by saying that this review is of the Ultimate Edition, which contains 30 minutes of extra footage and is vastly superior. I do, however love the theatrical edition aswell but it isn't as good.

I absolutely adore this movie. Everything from Zimmer's and JunkieXL's bombastic score, to the deeply emotional and grounded character motivations, to the amazing portrayals of Batman and Superman.

Sure, some elements of the movie doesn't work all that well. For example, Doomsday is a very bland and uninteresting villain, and Jesse Eisenberg's portrayal of the iconic Lex Luthor is very strange. But even these odd/bad things do wonders for the story. Doomsday serves his purpose quite well and doesn't really need to be anything more, as he isn't a villain, but more of a tool to unity our heroes.

The reason I believe this movie is disliked as much as it is, is, apart from studio meddling, that people came into it expecting a very action-heavy brawl between Batman and Superman, and instead got a very character driven, somber story about the duties and responsibilites of being a hero. And I can't blame them, that's how it was marketed, but it's not the focus of this film.

Also, that warehouse fight-scene is the single best action scene of batman. ever.

Red Dead Redemption II (2018 Video Game)
10/10
Fantastic story and great gameplay
28 March 2020
The story of red dead redemption 2 is by far the best one I've ever played in a game and Arthur easily the best protagonist. I've never connected with a character as much as I did with Arthur Morgan in my life, and I invested so much time, energy and emotions into him and his development. Every single character apart from Arthur is truly well written and the development they all go through feels natural and logical. At the end, the story had me in tears, something video-games not often succeed in doing.

Apart from the story, the game looks absolutely beautiful and features many hours of fun with the interesting and varied missions. Gameplay mechanics are fantastic and the attention to detail in dialogue and the background is just remarkable.

Hats off to Rockstar for creating such a wonderful game!

Birds of Prey (2020)

So incredibly entertaining
21 February 2020
This movie was fabulous. Margot Robbie and her birds of prey are amazing in their strong, kickass, humorous, and sexy way. The movie is so colorful and looks really fantastic. Ewan McGregor as Roman Sionis/Black Mask is very menacing and also a joy to watch.

The third act drags a bit but it makes up for it with almost 40 minutes of straight hysterical action, and I really mean that. The action is awesome, easily the best of any DC-movie, and there's a lot of it. The characters are so fun and a lot of their moments are also quite touching.

I really liked this film, and it's nice to see that DC is going in the right direction with their films. A shame that it seems to be doing poorly at the box office though..

With a few changes, this movie would have been a masterpiece
13 February 2020
Interesting concept and story with a great ending. Awesome cinematography with some really beautiful and haunting imagery. The score and sound design is also very good.

Acting performances are good, but not much more. What really brings this movie down for me, however, is the really odd filming and editing as well as the shaky, messy and incoherent fighting scenes. Looks almost cartoonist and takes you out of the otherwise intriguing and uncomfortable plot.

Fight Club (1999)

Most fun I've had with a movie in a long time
8 February 2020
I know I shouldn't be talking about it but god damnit, this film deserves to be talked about. How I managed to miss this movie for so many years I have no idea, but it's a shame considering how extremely fun and liberating it was to watch.

Norton and Pitt play their eccentric and chaotic characters brilliantly and they are so much fun to watch. The story of a bored and depressed man that starts an underground fight club to feel something is very interesting and watching the characters go at each other fists first is so freeing.

The plot is great and the ending of the movie is absolutely fenomenal. Honestly, I would have never expected the turn it took but I'm a big fan.

All in all, the most fun I've had with a movie for quite some time.

Donnie Darko (2001)

I liked this much less than I hoped
6 February 2020
This movie had a really cool feeling to it that I liked a lot, and I completely understand why it's sort of a cult classic. It's very interesting and, in a way, also quite charming.

Having said that, I.. did not enjoy this all that much. It just does too poorly of a job explaining its plot and instead of feeling satisfied, I felt confused and almost irritated to the point of losing almost all interest inte the film. I watched the director's cut that, at a 25 minutes longer run-time, still didn't have enough time to show the piece of exposition needed to understand what the hell was going on.

Unpopular opinion maybe, but apart from some cool bits, "Donnie Darko" seriously let me down.

Most emotional film I've ever watched
27 January 2020
This movie is a masterpiece, plain and simple. It is well acted, has a beautiful story, a fantastic ending and is extremely emotional. I'd like to focus on the latter, and if you want a more "normal" review, there's plenty of those on this site. Let me tell you about about three ways this movie absolutely toyed with my emotions in ways I did not expect;

1. It made me cry more than Forrest Gump. This is truly a feat, and a record I thought never would be broken.

2. It made me despise a character even more than Joffrey from Game of Thrones. Yet another truly hard task.

3. It made me walk away from the screen with my ears covered and eyes closed, for the first time since I was little. I just couldn't stand the shocking brutality of what I was watching.

This raw emotion is what I believe is the true strength of this film, and what sets it apart from other movies. If there's any movie at all out there that's deserving of a 10/10 rating, this is certainly one of them. Stunning.

A very strong crime thriller, but not as intense and thrilling as it could have been
24 January 2020
This movie does nearly everything well but for some reason it doesn't captivate me as much as many other crime thrillers. I think what's missing is intensity and thrilling moments in the first and second act of the movie and this made me lose a little focus. With that being said, the story is very interesting and original, and the ending is absolutely fenomenal in how it wraps up the mystery in a very shocking and emotional way.

Brad Pitt's and Morgan Freeman's characters are very well written and dynamic. They both have compelling and intriguing character arcs that evolves them in logical ways. This is delivered wonderfully through their fantastic acting. Kevin Spacey and Gwyneth Palthrow are also good in this film but they're not the stars of the show.

Other good things about the movie is the score and the set design. The score isn't particularly prominent but it delivers the few times it's in focus. The set designs are an important part of the story and feeling of the film and this is also done really well, it never dissapoints.

In summary, a very very strong crime thriller, but not as intense and thrilling as it could have been

Touching and happy film filled with character and personality
23 January 2020
This movie is about as far away from 'my type' of movie as possible, or at least that's what I thought, but I have to say I enjoyed it a lot.

It's a story about the upbringing and growth of four girls from the bubbling happiness and hopeful optimism of children, into the hard and scary reality of adulthood. Therefore, the focus of the film is the wonderful characters played by Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Timothee Chalamet and Laura Dern. They are all very well acted and every single character is unique and filled with personality.

Acting and characters aside, it's beautifully captured and the environments really breathes life into the film. The movie is also very touching and I couldn't help but cry, both tears of happiness and of grief.

My only complaint is that the story is rather messy and it often jumps between different time periods and places without giving good enough hints of this. I spent quite a lot of time and energy on trying to understand where and when they were, and that is something that could have been done better.

Overall, I really liked the film and I completely understand why it has received such critical praise.

Sex Education (2019–2023)
9/10
This is the height of teen comedy and drama
18 January 2020
Where do I even begin. Sex education is such a fantastic show and oddly enough, season 2 is even better than the previous season. It's very unique and like nothing I've ever encountered.

The characters are very dynamic, fun, well acted and all have beautiful character arcs that makes sense in the grand scheme of the show. Sure, it's very over the top but that's part of the fun and watching such a weird and fun show is very relieving sometimes. The set and costume designs are absolutelty fantastic and every single episode is filled to the brim with extravagant colours, shapes and sizes that's makes you really happy. At the same time, however, it's not afraid of being serious and heavy. These bits are also explored in great detail and to my surprise it got very very dark and emotional sometimes.

The story is fabulous and really clever, and every aspect of the show is relateable in some way (although very very extreme). I loved the first season but still, this season managed to top that by quite a large margin and I'm really looking forward to what Netflix will be doing with the inevitable third season.

Bombshell (I) (2019)

An important and well acted film but not fantastic by any means
16 January 2020
This is not the type of movie I would typically enjoy but all things considered, it's an interesting, powerful and, weirdly enough, very fun movie.

Seeing as it tackles the important issue of female objectification and sexual harassment it might be hard to imagine it being a funny film, but it really is. There's a very good balance between fun character moments and hilarious jokes that had the whole theatre laughing, and the serious and frankly quote disgusting scenes that had us all sitting silent and reflecting. Speaking of the strong message, the film handles it very well and although the characters achieve minor victories, it never gives us the satisfaction of victory and that really goes to show the magnitude of this dangerous issue.

Moving on, the costume and set designs are fantastic and suit the mood and narrative of the film perfectly. I'm not at all surprised that it has been nominated for an academy award in hairstyling and make-up, best actress in a leading role and best supporting actress. As one might expect from this, the acting is great and on Kidman's and Robbie's part sometimes quite remarkable.

One thing I'm not particularly fond of is the odd camera work in some scenes and how the zooming and certain camera movements make it look like something straight out of the office. It's obviously intentional and must serve some purpose but I don't get it, and to me it just seems a bit unprofessional.

As I stated at the beginning this is not the type of film I usually watch or enjoy but taking that into consideration I quite like it. Some parts of it are fantastic but all around it's a bit slow and uninteresting.

Gyllenhaal is going to have to see a doctor for his back after carrying this movie
15 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
First off, this movie is a mess, but a very well acted one. Jake Gyllenhaal once again shows just how incredible of an actor he is and his performance single handedly made this movie enjoyable. The range of emotion he conveys is astounding and seeing his character go through these feelings is certainly an experience.

Amy Adams is normally also a fantastic actor but she does not get to show that in this film due to her character only having two moods in the entire film: Sad and flirty. Michael Shannon is fantastic at what he gets to do in the film and Aaron Taylor-Johnson surprised me with a great performance considering I haven't seen him in much since his kick-ass days.

Moreover, the score is fabulous and one of the things I liked most about this film. Another strong element is the cinematography that really helps set the mood, and some shots are very beautiful. Now onto the negatives:

As I said, the story is messy, incoherent and doesn't do a good enough job of connecting the two plots. It's so bad, that they completely feel like two different movies, something which truly bothered me. Following this point, the ending is also a complete wreck that neither ties anything together, nor gives any answer, and it's very unsatisfyinig

Furthermore, the movie tries and fails, to be thrilling/scary which is dissapointing as that would take it to completely new heights in my opinion. Instead, it delivers one single jump scare and a revolting opening sequence that almost scared me away for a whole other reason.

Very dissapointing
14 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This show was very dissapointing. Since Netflix revealed they would be making the show I've been very hyped but unfortunately it was in vain, and I actually had a hard time getting through the 8 episode. However, there were some good things so let's start with that.

Cavill's portrayal of Geralt: This role fits him perfectly and his voice is absolutely glorious.

The fight choreography: The fight scenes are all wonderfully composed and choreographed, the fight at the end of episode 1 is probably the best I've ever seen in a show.

The cinematography: Some shots, and most of the fantasy landscapes, woods and castles, are beautifully designed.

Onto the negatives:

Cavill's portrayal of Geralt: While cool and all, the practical effects used for the eyes (lenses) made him look really stale and unable to convey emotion. I also thought some scenes was horrible overacted and felt really forced.

The editing: I just said how great I thought the fight choreography was, but that never really shines (apart from 2 fights in the 8 episodes) due to some horrible editing and weird slowmotion/sped up sequences.

Everything else: The story was very weird and for most of the season it didn't seem to be going anywhere at all. Yennefer was a little miscast, and most of the characters were boring and flat (apart from Jaskier, Yennefer and Ciri). The different timelines were a bit too confusing and so on...

All in all, not great but not horrible. I will watch sesason 2 and I really hope that it's better than S1.

Another genius film from the world's greatest filmmaker
13 January 2020
I only learned about this movie last week which is weird considering it's a quite critically acclaimed film from the world's best director. I watched it immediately, as one would, and it truly surprised me, such a fantastic film!

Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are amazing actors, and they portray the characters' anger, joy and struggle with great skill. Michael Caine is also great in his role (as always), while Scarlett Johansson doesn't get much to do. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one, is David Bowie as Nikola Tesla, and he actually portrays the character very well.

Unfortunately, the score is underwhelming and very forgettable and you truly notice the lack of Hans Zimmer' sound and music. The cinematography isn't remarkable but the scenes in the large theaters and some magic tricks are beautifully captured. The environment and feeling of the early 1900s is also captured very well and it is a perfect time period for the story.

What really shines about this movie is the ending, and how it perfectly and satisfyingly concludes the characters' arcs, while providing several brilliant plot twists that doesn't leave your mind for quite some time. On the contrary, I can't stop thinking about it, and the second the movie finished I wanted to see it again.

In conclusion, a wonderful film that has some weak parts but not weak enough to even leave a dent in my great impression of it. The ending is my favourite in a Nolan movie, and that is saying a lot considering the remarkable quality of his other films.

Memento (2000)
9/10
Genius writing and directing, as to be expected from C. Nolan.
11 January 2020
This movie is absolutely genius and although I love it, there are some negatives that I will quickly run through.

First off, the cinematography and visuals are very boring and not at all memorable (apart from the photographs and the parts in black and white). I understand that this is partly because of the budget but also because it fits the narrative of the film really well, but this doesn't take away from the fact that they are uninspiring and frankly quite boring. The score and sound design were not particularily great either, I can't even seem to remember if there was any music at all. My third and final complaint is about the acting. While the actors sometimes shined and truly showed the pain and tragedy of memory loss, most often the performances were quite bland and not something I will remember about this film.

The story, writing, and directing, however, was absolutely brilliant. In true Nolan fashion, he has created a wonderfully complex, interesting and truly unique story that is told in a very original and captivating way. It gives you something to think about, and the way it is all connected as well as how it gives us information and reveals, is extremely rewarding. Thank you, Cristopher Nolan, for this fantastic movie. I will not forget it for a long time.

The Lighthouse (I) (2019)

a moody and wonderfully acted masterclass in psychological thrillers
9 January 2020
Wow.

The first thing that greets you when watching this film is a black and white image of the sea, in an unusual aspect ratio, and the horrifying sound of a loud foghorn. This instantly lets you know what kind of film this is, and oh how wonderful it is. The black and white imagery, score, sound editing, costume and set designs combined with absolutely outstanding acting from Defoe and Pattinson gives this movie a feeling of being straight out of the early 1900s and it ensures a very odd and spooky mood that i find completely lovely.

Through the perspective of Pattinson's character, a very weird but interesting story unfolds in which we see the two lighthouse keepers descend into madness. This is brilliantly executed and acted, and most certainly career best performances from both Pattinson and Defoe.

The ending really confused me at first but I didn't really mind as I was too busy loving the rest of the film. After rewatching parts of it and really analyzing what confused me upon first viewing, I think i have it all figured out and this made me love it even more.

This is a fantastic movie and a candidate for the best movie of 2019. Hats of to Robert Eggers and the rest of the cast and crew.

Enemy (2013)

Odd and frustrating, but well acted and very interesting
7 January 2020
This movie is very very frustrating. Both in how it doesn't give me clear answers about anything at all, and in how incredibly hard it is for me to review it. Because, while I'm convinced it is absolutely genius in its writing and direction, it it almost too complicated and abstract for me to really enjoy the reveals and underlying meanings. This leaves me very conflicted after seeing the film, something that will keep it in my head for a long time but not necessarily in a good way.

Standout of the movie is of course Jake Gyllenhaal's acting and how he always seems to surprise me with yet another masterful performance. The other really good thing about the film is the mystery that presents and the feeling of satisfaction that comes when you truly understand it. This did, however, take a long time for me to figure and before that, I was nothing but frustrated at the lack of proper answers.

Another bad but great element of the film is the odd design choices made regarding its environment and coloration. Every scene, every building, every moment, was all showed through a very yellow and depressing lens. This puts the viewer in a mood that suits the story very well, but at the same time it makes the visuals uninteresting and, dare I say, boring.

In conclusion, the movie is best summarized with the sentence "Bad but great". Every story beat, directing decision and design choice, apart from Gyllenhaal's acting, is so conflicting and abstract that it truly confuses me. A strong seven out of ten, very interesting film!

Prisoners (2013)

Acting and directing so good I'm sleeping with lights on
7 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I went into this without knowing anything about it, not expecting anything but great acting from Jackman and Gyllenhaal. And oh, did I get that. Jackman's acting was definitely a career best, even better than Logan, and he conferred every emotion so well I couldn't help but cry and almost pray alongside him. Moreover, Gyllenhaal once again proves the extreme diversity of his acting and delivers a brilliant performance which also places among his best.

I'm not underestimating when I say that this movie is extremely brutal, sometimes maybe even a bit too brutal. Not only in its graphicness, but in what it implies about the characters and their actions as well as the feelings of guilt and anxiety certain scenes make you feel. This is very effectful and moody, but I can't help but wish that certain sequences were toned down, as I believe it would be more enjoyable that way. In contrast to this, the sound editing and score is stellar and really accentuates all the feelings I had throughout the film.

The story is gripping and has a nice balance between incredibly intense scenes and calmer ones where you get to breathe, but it's never lighthearthed and thus a little too harsh and depressing at times. The third act of the movie is weaker than the rest and leaves you with more questions than answers in typical Villenueve fashion. While well executed and interesting, it doesn't give me all the answers I'm after and responds to the rest of them in not so satisfying ways. Having said this, the final scene of the film is absolutely wonderful and almost manages to make up for the issues.

In summary, "prisoners" is a dark and truly horrifying thriller that serves you intriguing mysteries in typical Villeneueve manner but dissapoints when it comes to answering them. Safe to say, I will be sleeping with light on tonight.

Parasite (2019)
10/10
Absolute work of art
6 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As director Bong Joon-ho said during his Golden Globe-speech after winning best foreign film for "parasite": "Once you overcome the one-inch tall barriers of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.", and I am so happy I did. Having heard only good things about the movie I expected a lot, but it still exceeded my expectations tenfold.

Firstly, the writing is incredible. What seems to be quite a simple story about a family commiting fraud and deceipt to escape poverty, changes throughout the numerous twist and turns into something very unexpected, interesting and absolutely brilliant. The pacing is on point and from start to finish, the film takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions including, but not limited to: sadness, a feeling of well-deserved success, hapiness, guilt, unease, discomfort and fear.

Secondly, the score is fantastic and greatly accentuates these different feelings into something more. For example, the many intense and thrilling scenes are strengthened into a crippling suspense that leaves you unable to lose focus and calm down.

Finally, the ending is absolutely wonderful, although it also houses about the only critisism I have for this movie. After about half of the film I found myself wondering how on earth they were going to be able to pull of the ending, but they did, and it was not what I expected. Some of the decisions the characters make in the final act seems a bit out of left field and takes them in directions that doesn't neccesarily feel right. I do however think that's the point and it brings a very intriguing point about the movie's theme into question.

In short, "Parasite" is nothing short of a masterpiece.
