The Willoughbys (2020)
I did not expect this movie to be as great as it is.
I watched this expecting a silly kids movie with a fun concept, but I got a heartwrenching story about abuse and what family means. To tell the truth, I've cried during less than a dozen movies during my life, and I sobbed twice during this movie. Tim is a confused boy trying to survive and at the same time live up to his family name. He takes the blame for what the other kids do, and I can't blame him for his trust issues; his parents never loved him and the job of protecting the younger kids fell to him. Along with that, I feel as though he has an inferiority complex; his sister is a musical prodigy, and his two baby brothers are inventors that rival Phineas and Ferb. He's just Tim, so he takes the role of leader, but he's still just a kid. Jane is the hope, but she's young and doesn't see how her actions affect others and can't comprehend why people i.e. Tim, make certain choices. Nanny tries her best, but it takes some time for her to realize just how screwed up these kids are and she doesn't know how to handle that. I also didn't expect murder to be a major plot point, but I've never hated two movie characters so much in my life, and I think they got what they deserved. What really upset me though, is that this kind of treatment is real, if just not this exaggerated. And although I don't agree with the intial protrayal of the CPS workers as evil, I do have to admit that at least American adoption programs aren't good enough right now. The 'family doesn't have to be related' plot slashed with 'living up to a family name' works really well to create conflict. I do also have to mention the animation, which is like taking the best textures from Trolls and combining it with actually good designs and animation. Overall, something I really liked and would recommend to others if they want a memorable and sweet movie.
The Nuttiest Nutcracker (1999)
A hazy nightmare from my youth
I was in elementary school when i first witnessed the dumpster fire that is this film. For years it has haunted me, a vague memory that I wasn't even sure was real. Then I found it again and it all made sense. I cannot believe that this was shown to me in a school. I'm giving this a low rating due to the years of trauma and questioning my very sanity, but I must say, I had a good laugh at how garbage this is.
