Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019)
A Lot of Potential
This could have been a masterpiece, but the obvious politically correct themes were all placed as one would have expected with a film assembled by committee: Poised women tolerating the brutish, oppressive men, check. A beautiful, heroic abortion scene, check. The obligatory nudity, becoming gratuitous and not particularly critical to the plot, check. And all of this at an excruciatingly slow pace. I surveyed my wife after the movie, and she was similarly unimpressed, and for the same reasons. Political correctness run amok. I should have known by the 98% tomato meter reading; RottenTomatoes is a purely political site, but I expected better from IMDB.
Freedom Watch with Judge Napolitano (2009)
Fox Cancels the Only Show in Its Lineup That Promoted the Constitution
Freedom Watch with Judge Andrew Napolitano was an outstanding pro-Constitution program on the Fox Business Network. Educating his viewers about the historical underpinnings of the Constitution and the libertarian mindset of our founders when they wrote it, the show was arguably the only politically-oriented program on any network that was not obsessed with the ratings-driven left versus right, big-government political paradigm. But despite good viewership, Fox executives decided to pull the plug on it. To his credit, Napolitano did not angrily burn his bridges behind him, but rather continued his role as a legal analyst for Fox News. While both of the major political parties abuse the tenets of power in Washington, ignoring the Constitution's limits of their authority, a symptom of how perhaps unlikely it is that we will escape a Depression-like collapse and massive civil violence is witness of the few television programs like this one that are canceled just as they are struggling to turn the Titanic around. This show every bit deserves the ten-star rating I give it, and then some.
