Premonition (2007)
Pretty good up until the last 20 minutes
First things first, this movie moves really slowly. I was watching it with a friend's family, and a few people just left because they were bored. At this point, though, I was rather enjoying Premonition. Sandra Bullock's acting is pretty good, and the mood and cinematography were well done.
However, at about the one hour mark, it all went down hill. Continuity problems starting springing up, and I found myself just glancing at my watch and hoping the ending would come some. But when the ending did come, it was a HUGE disappointment. I won't give it away, but I can't believe I sat through that whole movie for that to happen.
I have seen a lot of people saying that this movie is poorly rated because "typical Americans" don't have the brain and/or patience for it. There is not really anything here to misunderstand, though. The plot is straight forward, but is just told out of order. And I was very patient with it, but the ending was just plain disappointing. If you want to see a good movie in this style, I'd recommend "21 Grams" or "Deja Vu."
Farce of the Penguins (2006)
Huge Disappointment
I must admit, I had high hopes for this movie. I saw that Bob Saget was directing, and thought I was in for some ridiculous, dirty humor. However, this was not the case. Bob Saget played the sensitive, boring penguin and was quite disappointing. Besides this let down, the movie was just not funny. The low production quality didn't bother me, I just didn't find much of it to be funny. In the whole hour and ten minutes, there were probably 2 or 3 funny parts, most of them involving cameos. The only thing that saved me from giving this one star was the narration by Samuel L. Jackson, which was great at times. Don't waste your time or money on this boring movie.
Snakes on a Plane (2006)
Absolutely horrible
All internet buzz aside, this movie was god awful. I expected the movie to be more of a farce than anything. Instead the film makers tried to make a serious thriller/horror movie, and they completely missed. There were only a few good parts, and a couple good lines by Samuel Jackson. Other than that, it was a bunch of gore and some poorly animated snakes. All of the internet joking was miles better than the actual movie. Now that the movie has actually come out, hopefully this joke will die. Don't waste your time or money on this piece of over hyped trash. If you're looking for something that's funny and entertaining, then just go to Snakes on a Blog.
The Da Vinci Code (2006)
Well done, but rushed
I read the book and enjoyed it, so it's always tough to see the movie interpretation. As with any book adaptation, the Da Vinci Code movie lacks much of the back story and set up that made the book so alluring. Most everything that was in the book was included in the movie, but it was very squished. This was probably done to keep the movie from becoming a marathon, but it was upsetting to see some key scenes crushed into a few seconds. Everything that was included was well done, though. Tom Hanks pulls off a satisfactory Robert Langdon, even though it is difficult to think of a chummy comedic actor playing a university professor. Sir Ian McKellen is spot on, as usual. I'd recommend it.
The Break-Up (2006)
Stereotypical garbage
I'm going to preface this by saying that I went in expecting a funny movie. That being said, I was very disappointed. There were maybe 3 or 4 laughs, most of which were provided by the side characters. The rest of the movie consisted of the two main characters arguing and trying to do horrible things to each other. Additionally, the characters couldn't have been more stereotypical. Vince Vaughn played the typical sports and video game obsessed nincompoop that gives the male gender a bad name. Jennifer Aniston was the standard "you don't appreciate me" female lead whose sole purpose it seemed was to whine about trivial nonsense. By the time the movie was halfway towards its predictable ending, I was ready to leave.
