Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
"It's a lot smoother ride in the back."
A quick review. This is a very easy bond to like. It oozes charm, camp and cheeky in all the right places and never pretends to be something it isn't. Featuring the guy from "Rocky Horror Show," really sums it up. The classic Bond villain, Blofield, two gay henchmen, extensive shows of Las Vegas, Amsterdam and even South Africa. The makers took Flemings book and had some real fun with it. John Barry's score is brilliant throughout and Shirley Bassey sings the timeless main theme of the same name. It encourages the viewer to see the lighter side, but still contains really some dark set pieces too. I've seen the costume worn by the almost unbelievable named "Plenty O'toole" it's minute, evening gown an anorexic would find snug. Lots of glamour, the film has a Triumph Stag in mustard yellow (so 70's"). You get to see the amazing Hovercraft from Dover, that was a real treat to go over to France on. The one liners are witty by Connery, supported strongly by the female lead. It feature homosexuality, the first time I've ever seen that in a bond. The promo art is top notch, Adams is on the sets and Connery give Roger Moore the best spot to launch his success as Bond. It's in my top 3 because it's clever, funny, dark and exciting. Getting a scorpion down the back as a death is exactly the sort of creativity that makes Bonds great. Enjoy, and enjoy again.
The Day Shall Come (2019)
Dillued, not funny and boring.
The almost patronising level of satire seems to ruin what could have been a decent enough film, I have enjoyed Chris Morris' work in the past. I laughed maybe twice. The film seems to rely on the fact I am so ridiculously stupid I won't be able to understand what satire is, I wonder the problem was in the editing. Glad its over.
