Joker (2019)
A Great Return to what Made DC So Great
DC was my favorite producer of films back in the day of "The Dark Night." Their attraction to dark realism was fascinating, and it contrasted splendidly with Marvel's approach.
Unfortunately, DC got stuck in the rut of a constant need for useless comedy. The movies dragged on, filled with boring, flat characters, bloodless "fights" (which were really just flashing lights on a mostly black background), and really poor attempts at comedy. The need for the movies to be appealing to children didn't help either.
In this film, there are certainly some vaguely comedic elements, but the overall theme is dark and suspenseful; there is a constant tension present, which, along with the amazing titular character (acted beautifully) made this film truly spectacular.
A Very Brady Renovation (2019)
Superb Special Deserving of its Positive Ratings
I am a younger individual; one of a far younger audience than that of the original "Brady Bunch." I do, however, know many individuals who eagerly consumed the original series all those years ago; through such senior acquaintances, I have developed a healthy appreciation for the much-beloved show - from such, my interest for this HGTV series similarly formed.
Watching this series, I feel a sort of undeserved nostalgia. How, exactly, does one feel nostalgic for that which they were never privy to? to that which they never quite experienced? I don't claim to be an expert on such matters, but, regardless, I can attest to the presence of the aforementioned longing. The delight at observing the '70s-era stylings and culturally relevant features existing within this time delighted me, and seeing actors and actresses so influential in television furthered my satisfaction.
The traditional HGTV elements were also there: from many of the favorite hosts being present to the structured renovation format. I have lived with this style of production for many years, so it's certainly not a novel concept to me, but it is pleasantly familiar, so I have no complaints.
Yes, the show panders to the nostalgia felt by many for the comforting family dynamics and groovy stylings of '70s-era America, but, to me, this was done quite well, and the effect was ultimately beneficial for both the audience and the studio.
In conclusion, I enjoyed this series, and recommend it highly to both fans of the original "Brady Bunch" and you those of HGTV renovation shows of the last decade. Please, do not let the battles betwixt generations cloud your ability to appreciate past times and crucial family dynamics exemplified by the Brady Bunch and perhaps glorified by this HGTV production, it can potentially prevent you from enjoying a great series, and the amazing show that led to it.
