Mr. Bricks: A Heavy Metal Murder Musical (2011)
Troma Maintains Their 'Weirdness' Streak!
The one thing that I truly love about Troma is that they support independent film unconditionally! Whether it's comedy, horror or something completely different, Troma will support and release it so we all have a chance to see it! And the something completely different is exactly what you get in their latest release, Mr. Bricks.
Mr. Bricks is the story of Eugene Hicks, a big man who's on the wrong side of the law. When Hicks kidnaps a policewoman, he crosses a line that will change his life forever. First, he's shot in the head and survives, then, when he comes to, he begins his search for this woman who he loves...no matter what the cost! Mr. Bricks is a simple tale of love, betrayal and corruption, but it's told in such an unusual way that you won't be able to take your eyes off it. It's a "Heavy Metal Murder Musical"...and if those words don't make you think, then there's something wrong with you! Mr. Bricks is a strange movie, made stranger by it's topic...and then the icing on the cake is characters breaking into metal songs!!! It might sound too weird for you, but trust me, it works! I'm giving Mr. Bricks 3 out of 4 cigars, it's not going to be for everyone, but if you're experimental and want to see something wildly different, then check out Mr. Bricks!
Me, Tommy and the Brothers (1998)
Cool Indie Drama, Worth Your Time And Money
Me, Tommy and the Brothers is one of those rare things...an indie drama that actually works! Most of the time, indie dramas tend to be a conglomeration of theatre students emoting waaaaay too much and performing a script as if they were on stage! Me, Tommy And The Brothers manages to make you feel like these are real people with real problems.
It's a movie that will make you rethink your relationships and appreciate them a bit more! It gets an 8 out of 10, because it's not perfect, the video quality is a bit off, due to the use of VHS technology, but this is a movie that's still worth the time and effort to see!
Cloverfield (2008)
Don't Waste Your Time Or Money!
After reading some other posts here, I couldn't help myself but post too. If you thought this might be the first great monster movie or an intense experience, then you haven't ever had an experience or seen a monster movie in your life!!! First of all, an entire movie, while in theory is a great idea, in actuality it gets very annoying after about ten minutes. The idea of a monster attacking New York and seeing it through the eyes of the people being attacked is a really great idea, but after about fifteen minutes of seeing nothing and hearing that something cool is going on...ALL OFF CAMERA!!! When the attack finally comes (and it takes what feels like forever to set up characters through the hand held camera) it looks like something cool is going on and we can't wait to see it, the sad fact is that we never get to see (clearly) what's going on, and we never get a good explanation of what is happeneing. What we know is that the city is being attacked by a monster, the military is involved and they're losing the battle.
While I've read that this is scary and intense, what it really is, is a Godzilla movie told from the perspective of the people running from the monster. And, while our 'heroes' rush back into the fray to rescue a girl, the audience is never really brought into the mix totally. Oh, we're following along for the ride, but, since we don't really know what's going on, we're not completely involved.
I have to admit, I bought into the hype (and the Star Trek trailer sealed the deal), but after the movie, I felt just like I did after The Blair Witch Project! I knew that the hype and discussion about the movie were going to be far better than the movie. It's sad that all this time and effort were built around a movie that's this poorly done. Yes, it might look cool, and it might have a cool concept, but, if you're making movie, you have to remember the audience. We might want to know what this monster is, we might want to know what happens when you get bitten by one of the smaller monsters, and what the hell is going on!!! If you're interested in a cool monster movie, then head down to the video store and rent Godzilla: Final Wars, avoid this movie if you're looking for excitement and horror, Cloverfield delivers none of what it promises!!
Cyxork 7 (2006)
The Most Fun I've Had At An Indie Movie!!
Cyxork 7 is not so much a sci-fi movie, as much as it's a commentary on Hollywood and the film industry. The premise is simple, the Cyxork franchise is on the wane, but internet geeks have kept it alive, now a script generated by the web nerds is going to restart the franchise. But, due to the low budget, the filmmakers are forced to use an impending earthquake as their special effects.
Funny, biting and at times even heartwarming, Cyzork 7 is the indie movie that most Indies wish they were! A nice mix of recognizable and up-and-comers, a fantastic script and, just a lot of fun. You can tell that the cast and crew probably had as much fun making the movie as the audience does watching it.
If you have the chance to see Cyzork 7, don't miss it! You'll be missing out of a movie that's sure to be a cult favorite!
A Bothered Conscience (2006)
A Truly Great Indie Horror Movie!
While it's not perfect (and I think Dennis will admit to that), it's far from your standard low budget horror fare. A Bothered Conscience is what indie films are all about, from the story to the acting everything here is top notch! The story involves a 'mountain man' who just wants to be left alone, it's the lengths he'll go to to be left alone that makes this different. The lead actor here is Dennis Smithers, Sr. and, for someone who's never acted before, he's the standout! I honestly believe him in this, and, frankly, he'll make you watch over your shoulder the next time you go camping in the woods!!
Also, there's a great twist ending to the movie that makes it just that much better. If you're looking for something scary, but also something different and original, then A Bothered Conscience is an A+ movie!
Shock-O-Rama (2005)
A great old fashioned sci-fi/horror b movie!
Shock O Rama is basically a 'twilight zone-ish' b movie. There's two stories connected by one transitional story. The connecting story stars Misty Mundae, who plays an actress trapped doing bad b movies (sound like typecasting?!?) who just wants to get away from the grind of making these b movies. She travels to an old house where she's attacked by an evil zombie. The other stories involve an evil giant brain who's trying to take over the world from a home for wayward women (sort of) and an attack on a junk yard by tiny aliens.
This movie is a great drive in movie...even if you don't know or have never been to a drive in! It's just good old fashioned fun, and well worth your money!
