The Good Wife (2009)
Lazy Writers Cause the Problem
What problem do they cause? Well for at least seven or eight shows, Alicia and Carey have been trying to fund and to find an appropriate location to set up their own law firm. They have not been successful in either effort.
Much of their problems are due to Alicia's mother, who tries to provide financial support. But that support never comes through. The actress playing this character is comical in these respects.
These lawyer's scenes with a particular Court Judge go on and on and on in a maddening fashion. Get on the ball, you lazy writers!
Then, there is their law firm's co-owner, Diane, who is running for a judgeship, but cannot get the head judge's approval. Her firm's major co-workers seem not to be at all successful in their efforts. Too bad, Diane and show writers. Try harder
NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service (2003)
Horrible Story Writing
These story lines USED to be about Naval personnel and the problems they encountered---with the NCIS Team helping resolve them.
Anymore, most of these programs are about the "personnel interactions" between team members. For example, Tony and Ziva: for weeks and weeks, he has been trying to get her back from Israel and get her to love him. This has become so tiresome...tiresome...tiresome.
And Gibbs storyline involving shooting down some of his own friends is to far out of his to-date character line that it is amost comical, to say the least.
Please, Writers, whatever you do, please get OFF this track. You are losing fans!
The Falls (2012)
The "Intense Buildup" we're given in this story of.....
.....young men and their love for Jesus Christ, family, church (and, sometimes, each other) is near enthralling....and watchable again and again.
A "Realistic Primer" (in the film's beginning) of the daily lives of Young Couples (male, Mormon Companions) on a Mission. In this story, we're introduced to a dorm-like setting of a simple, unadorned double room, with basic kitchen. We watch as the Companions (always staying together, as a pair) are introduced to their new commitments and goals, their rules of conduct, and submission of required progress reports. Everything arranged for them....everything with a purpose.
(( NOTE: We learn, in the Special Features section of this DVD, that Writer/Director, Jon Garcia, was a neophyte (newbie) to things Mormon....and had to "study up" on his subject (unlike C. Jay Cox, the EX-Mormon and Director of 2003's "Latter Days". ))
OUR CAST OF ACTORS (only the primaries):
- Actor Nick Ferrucci, as R. J. Smith. (I call him: "He Who Bringeth Out Joy"). Playing a young 20-year old Man on a Mission (2 years long), we follow him from film beginning to end. And at the start he informs us: "Mormon Faith truly is a benefactor of wholesomeness." BUT...the question later becomes: can R. J. stick to that belief? At any rate, here is a good time to point out that he is our Hug-Guy--some Accomplishments deserve one! And if there is any such thing as a "Light-Hearted" Mormon Missionary, R .J. often comes close. You'll recognize this later on as he backtalks his Companion, Chris, in an effort to get him to "lighten up" and into a better mood.
- Actor Benjamin Farmer, as Chris Merril. (I call him: "He Who Maketh the First Move"). As R. J.s Mormon Companion, and Senior Elder, Chris has been on other missions (there, perhaps, is the rub). A sometimes fervent young man, Elder Chris is our Serious one. But, it won't take you long to realize that things have begun to rankle this Missionary. He's begun "to question".
- Actor Brian Allard, as Rodney. (I call him: "He Who Enlightenth Our Lives"). Plays a pot-smoking, ex-Iraq war vet, with much of a PTSD personality (or maybe not....he could be our sanest character). Despite his truly horrible experience in that war zone, he will have you absolutely rolling off your seats laughing when he is at his best. He's lovable...he's understanding. And frankly, he could be the best thing which happens to our R. J. and Chris.
Despite all we learn about the Mormon Religion (and it's not always Christ-like), make no mistake about what I say next: ....THIS IS, AT ITS ROOT, A LOVE STORY BETWEEN TWO MEN. And so, as the story edges to its end, we find R. J. experiencing increasingly caring thoughts (and concerns) for his withdrawn Companion, Chris. Which then leads to a series of Notable Events:
- A diner table discussion, between our Companions, of R. J.s concern over Chris slackening off....resulting in a surprise, Hand-Touching-Hand moment. Which then leads to:
- An accusation of "Faggotry" against them....resulting in a fight by R. J. in protecting themselves. Which then leads to:
- Bruised knuckles....resulting in Hand-Holding, in the applying of an ice pack (a nice little moment). Which then leads to:
- Exhaustion and early drop off into sleep by Chris....leaving R. J. to prepare for bed, say his prayers and, then, to gaze at a sleeping Chris, before turning out the light. For me, this is THE point at which I knew Love existed between them. We can see it in R. J.s face....we can see it in his eyes. It is "The Defining Moment".
This film also contains an absolutely heart-rending denouement (outcome) scene between R. J. and his church Stake President. It is one of the strongest performances you will see by a young actor. While it will tear at your heart....it is NOT an apology scene and is extremely well written.....leaving us the possibility of hope for our two young men. Will the moments later Final Scene confirm that for us?
Memorable Moments: A Bus-ride Kiss. In fact, every kiss these actors bring to one another....seems real...seems meant. How rare!
PS--Production values are quite high for this Indie Film. Particular mention is deserved for the wonderful film score, music and lyrics. Made up of very simple piano, guitar and vocal harmonics, this score will absolutely grab you. A musical standout for me was the near film end "Coda of Discovery" (they are found out).

The Seminarian (2010)
"The (*Self-Loathing) Seminarian"......
Thinking himself only good enough to fall for and cling to an emotionally broken wreck of a man ("Bradley"), this work's Anti-hero lead actor (Mark Cirillo, playing an increasingly irritating and progressively boring "Ryan") will, at film's end, deny...reject...and break the heart of an emotionally stable fellow seminarian ("Gerald"), who actually loves him.
Along the way through this "goes nowhere mess", our Seminarian calls / texts us to death with a myriad of cell / computer messages---which never amount to much of anything. And don't forget to add in the several "feeling-sorry-for-myself" visits home to Mom.
The 3-Stars are for fairly good production values and some decent side-character acting.
*Evidence of Self-Loathing: "Bradley".....and Ryan's impulsively changing (dependent on his emotional state) Thesis Conclusions.
Final Warning: For your own sanity's sake..avoid this film...um, like something Biblical.....oh, The Plague!

Going Down in LA-LA Land (2011)
No "Chemistry" like this, since.....
....."Brokeback Mountain." ......(*Alternate title for this review: "I Hear the Crabcakes are Excellent").
In its first near two-thirds running time, "Going Down in Blah-Blah Land," is the typical "Hollywood meat grinder" story about all those aspiring, young Newbies scrambling for a foothold, after arriving in the world's film capital. (WARNING: Beware those Gay video porn-mills!). ....Ah, BUT, then come the very best parts, where we start to see...(well, you'll find that out, below).
NOW TO OUR CAST: And saving the best for last, here's a glimpse at the major characters...beginning with:
- *Allison Lane, as the ditzy B(Girl)FF of the male Lead. Named "Candy", she is the supportive and often funny--yet sometimes tiresome--friend from back home. (Good for Allison...she gets more screen time than anyone other than our main star).
- Next, in a major (time-wise) supporting role, we have the Director, himself: Casper Andreas, playing a "User" of a guy, who we'll later see as the true scuzzball he becomes. (This viewer thinks Andreas would do well, in future, spending all his time BEHIND the camera....for I'm starting to picture him as he appears in his last scene---or is that just effective acting?).
- AND FINALLY: Let's speak to that "CHEMISTRY" mentioned above. RARELY, in an American produced Gay film, do we get to see such an emotionally deep relationship between two men. It was obviously developed by main actor, Matthew Ludwinski (as our gorgeous "Adam") and his co-lead, Michael Medico (as sweet, but closeted, "John") during their shooting time with one another. Their "few" scenes together will keep you RIVETED. We can a..l...most Touch what they burn off the screen at us. (And there's the shame of this movie: 56 and one-half minutes into it before we even see this couple together--except for a "prologue" of sorts). NEVERTHELESS, you tell me if the likes of this film relationship has been seen, in this country, since the days of "Brokeback Mountain"!
Oh, I had my doubts, well into this movie......but Matthew Ludwinski held me to it.

A Wedding Most Strange (2011)
A man selecting from a field of possible wives......
.....Just as in any (heterosexual) fairytale, this film introduces us to an "inheritance situation" confronting a young Prince of a Man (notice I didn't say Handsome), who is faced with choosing---from a selection of desirable women---that person who will become his wife.
OH, WAIT...WAIT...WAIT! ....Did I get this all wrong? Oh, dear me. Perhaps I've misunderstood (though the storyline in this film, and the behaviors of its 4 male main characters, certainly make that easy to do). So, please..won't you let me start over again?
Possibly...just possibly...this story is, INSTEAD, about a Gay (or is he) young Prince of a Man, who is faced with choosing a spouse from a field of two handsome lads + one older man (and, whoa...an ex-wife). ....But, truly, it was difficult for me to conclude that any of these characters were Gay (altho there was one supporting character who....ahem..ahem). More directly, such was the case for me because I saw no Gay romantic behavior taking place between our Prince and any of his three choices. Though I suppose, relievedly for the 4 males actors involved, their script called for no lips to touch any other lips in this entire spouse selection process. In other words, none of these actor's acquaintances could ever wonder if, in real life, they might be Gay.
Lastly, much of the dialog, particularly for the supporting characters, is flip...silly...and nonsensical (at least for we non-Brits out here). While there are many of the right platitudes spoken along the way, they usually come during the wrong places in the film.
So, if any of you out there are looking for a Gay romantic film to take home, this is NOT the one which will likely do it for you. Oh, yes...production values are pretty high (only because in its genre, it is not a cheaply-made American production). But, admittedly, there are some funny bits.
This DVD will not be making it into my Library of Gay Keepers.

Nights in the Gardens of Spain (2010)
Almost....almost as if seen from a......
...Woman's Point of View...and involving much of a woman's sensitivity.
And yet the movie we're given is from a story written by a man, Witi Ihimaera. A man well known for an acclaimed, later literary work (and film), "The Whale Rider" (world premiere at the 2002, Toronto International Film Festival). Still, this is an author who seems to possess much of the "sensitivity" referred to above. In truth, female touches abound, which should be no surprise, inasmuch as this film work was steered by Director Katie Wolfe, aided by the screenplay writing of Kate McDermott. So, in essence, this is almost as much the story of our Gay lead, Kawa's ....Wife....his Mother....his Daughter, as it is of the man, himself.
BUT, woman's point of view or not, the Pain....the Angst....revealed to us in Calvin Tuteao's characterization of Kawa is REAL. For at its heart this is a story of a man from whom much is, and has been, expected by his Maori societal group....and family. We see a Gay man who has, in fact, led a heterosexual married life, with children. Nevertheless, what we are shown, beneath the cover of all that, is a man experiencing a severe case of "Closetophobia" (fear of Coming Out).....and a near disabling Fear of Disapproval.
Yes, there is a male lover (on the side)....and visits to a bathhouse. BUT for those anticipating finding more than mere hints of Gay romance and Gay love scenes in this work, I must reluctantly say such hopes will be dashed. The emphasis seems to be, instead, upon heterosexual closeness....family closeness. And fear of loss of the latter.
Oh, there is a "final stand" taken against family...and society, and it is effectively conveyed to we viewers. But I will reveal nothing more about this film's closing storyline. I can say, however, that production values were unexpectedly high from this film goer's point of view. And gorgeous New Zealand scenery doesn't hurt at all (rating credit was given for all this).
I have yet to decide whether to keep this video in my Gay Film Library.

Contracorriente (2009)
Homosexuals & Ghosts...(as deep a male love story ever shown us)....
....Society....and our Communities tell us: "You've not a Ghost of a Chance."
(( When Society, families, others close by and, sadly, even ourselves keep us from being who we are supposed to be...from loving the person we are supposed to love...then we've allowed ourselves to be screwed (and, yes, I'm talking about me...and, likely, some of you). And every now and again, to remind us of this, as happens in this tale, there will come some sign or object...perhaps as simple as a "Candle"...which mysteriously appears in our lives, causing us to recall what we've lost ))
(( Have you ever thought...or said to a Beloved: "Without you, there is Nothing?" If yes, then you were foretelling a major theme of this film ))
A married, coastal fisherman (Miguel) as our main lead, and an unattached, visiting artist (Santiago) are the focus of this passionate love story between 2 men, spanning youth into adulthood. We'll learn this affair has a likely background of boys spending summers together...of fun times...and, no doubt, moments of finding love with one another. Sadly, however, this is a film focusing on their current day relationship which, like that of Romeo & Juliet, is being thwarted in almost every way.
So, for now, we find ourselves watching and becoming absorbed in an extremely impassioned--though well hidden--love affair. With nearly every scene involving these two leads, our view of the intensity of their love for one another continues to be reinforced, as the film makes its way to a heart-rending conclusion. Of hundreds of such films in my possession, none surpass the realistic displays of love and affection given us by these actors...this director. And in watching this story play out, it becomes oh so obvious that, while Miguel deeply cares for his pregnant wife, it is Santiago who is the "Great Love" of his life. We see a relationship which has even reached the point of loving "endearment names" being used for one another (Miguel as "Mico" / Santiago is "Tiago"), not to mention our witnessing numerous scenes of closeness--erotic and otherwise.
Some final thoughts: You will come to see theirs as an "Everlasting Love". And you will witness pure joy in something as simple as a hand-in-hand stroll....and sadness as stirring as a loving hand against cheek. Happy emotions deep enough to hit you in the gut....but also sadness...tears...loss. If you're not ashamed of crying, you will probably do so. This is a movie of lessons for many of we viewers, importantly telling us that letting go of a love, even one we may have at times denied, is an impossibility. It is an especially apt reminder...if we are to live a truthful future life (just watch as our main lead resolves his truth during a heartbreaking moment with his wife near film's end).
PS--Watch for a young, fellow fisherman, Tano by name, who I often see lending support when most others don't, and taking a definite interest in our beleaguered Miguel. See where he positions himself in at least one group gathering....notice where his eyes flicker in scenes involving Miguel. Ah, who knows if he is a possible harbinger for Miguel's future and whether, in this man, "Mico" will find the solace and warmth he now so desperately needs. (Am I dreaming this up? You decide.)

Private Romeo (2011)
And I quote: "It's Joyous...and just about.....
Brotherhood and Love....and not about the bashing....and not about the hate....and not about the struggle. Because...I think we need more films like that....I think we need more things saying that Love is Universal....and it is beautiful, no matter what. And I'm really proud to be a part of this project."
(( These words are the heartfelt expressions of Matty Doyle (Glenn / Juliet), in preparing to give an encore rendition of "You Made Me Love You", at the following YouTube address: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25_D9qvxJ0c ))
Bringing life and passion to a 400+ year old play is a gutsy, yet potentially tricky endeavor. In doing so, Director Alan Brown had a "Nice" idea (he's had them before). BUT...will raw Shakespeare (let alone with a cast not-trained-in-Shakespeare) pull in everyday Gay viewers around the world? Time and return on expenses will tell. Though I personally hunger for the success of this film work, that "BUT" remains a potential killer for his efforts.
Still and all, if anything can keep this film work alive...and long remembered...it will the touching, yet sizzling, Love Story given us by Seth Numrich (Sam / Romeo) and Matt Doyle (Glenn / Juliet). They hold absolutely nothing back in both their emotional and physical lovemaking. Their scenes together are oh-so-easy for this reviewer to play, and replay again.
BUT, now I must be honest...and say that about the basics of this Story---the basics of Shakespeare---I am ill-equipped to give you more. Yet, there is someone....someone from the several existing reviews of this film, whose deeply descriptive and perceptive words say it all. And those words belong to Rachel Schweissinger, and can be found in her May 19, 2012 review at Amazon.com, entitled: "Outstanding, Heartbreaking, Haunting, Beautiful". Do yourself a favor and read them.
PS--Thank you, Matt Doyle, for giving us a today's-rendition of "You Made Me Love You." It's right up there with another favorite---Harry Nilsson's 1973** track of that same song. And perhaps you'll consider another visit to "Feinsteins" and give us your go at R & J's true Signature Song: "Always" (the perfect lyrics for J. to sing to R.). Oh, and Harry needs the competition.

eCupid (2011)
Directors should heed their Fan's reviews at.......
.......sites such as this, and elsewhere.
And yes, let me say it right up front: This is a well-done production (Calciano is very good at surrounding himself with capable cinematography and sound folks---there's little to fault). Obviously, his casting personnel have done their best to provide us with cute and hunky co-leads, as well as a fun group of major supporting actors (mention of some, below). It was a rare moment when their character arcs didn't ring true (obviously, the writing helped here). As to Storyline, it's as much one of "today's world" as it could possibly be....giving us an enjoyable ride and any number of lessons to be learned.
BUT having said all that, a large reservation remains for me....and it involves the Romantic angle of a story like this. So, let me be the Bad Guy in this group and explain my last statement in the following way:
Some pre-release photo shots and a preview trailer led this Fan to believe, or HOPE, that our Good Director Calciano had perhaps read and heeded a past review of mine ("Is It Just Me?"), in which I took he and other Gay Romance film directors to task for NOT providing realistic kissing scenes. About his last film's attempts, I basically stated: "Blink and you'll miss 'em." ....But STILL, even in this latest work, it seems if you "double-blink," you'll miss 'em. Just maybe that's because our two "eCupid" lead actors give little more than quick pecks on the lips or cheek (surely not a case of: "Whoa...folks might think I'm Gay"!?). Though I must concede that Frat-Boy Dawson was really "persistent".....and fellow worker, Keith (Matt Lewis, in an exciting performance) gave his lip-lock a really good shot.
Other main supporting actors of note include Andy Anderson (Chris 1).....and of course, the inestimable Morgan Fairchild, as the Divinity Drive-In's Mother Confessor....and Guru of Love (she probably even "out-angels" Gabriel).
In the end, let's hope there will be "some" learning derived from reviews put out here by nonprofessional guys such as you and I. Let's also hope for better film productions in future. (Hey...despite all, I'd buy another of this Director's films.)
Now...how to finish all this up? Hmm? By George..I think I've got it! BY GEORGE..I think I've got it! I'll just reuse my parting words in reviewing our Director's last film:
"So, how to end all this? Let me do it by asking: Is it fun and cute and attention-holding? Well, yes....for the most part. But that doesn't mean it couldn't have been better....and my rating reflects that. (And yes, yes, yes....I have watched it more than once before butting in here)."
PS--Interesting that most all of the first 10 reviews are by "first-timers". Friends, possibly? (And, Adam Huss, you actually sneaked in here---Go, Baby!)

Ausente (2011)
Fell in love with "PLAN B" (a Romance)...BUT this.......
.....Latest Work by Director Marco Berger is so very much the opposite (well, perhaps there's a "tinge" of romantic love). Instead, we're being given: A Crush-love...almost a Stalkerish-love.
In a comparison of the two movies, "Absent" is the more accomplished production....both in camera work and locations-wise. And as in the earlier film, here the Co-leads and supporting actors also cannot be faulted. Javier De Pietro, as Gay-aware, swim team student Martin Blanco, delivers an admirable first film performance as a mid-teens young man, who is "crushing" on his team coach. Martin has a "Plan" (but...unlike in Director Berger's preceding film, no alternative, Plan B has even been thought of). Single-minded and intensely focused, our Martin has set his sights on placing himself in his team coach's very own bed. Next up, as our unsuspecting object of affection (I mean, obsession), we have the attractive, student-oriented Coach Sebastian Armas (Carlos Echevarria, an experienced actor of some 12 films). This film star ably paints a picture for us of a serious and never smiling, heterosexual(?) man, who is much concerned for those under his charge.....and possessing no(?) interest in the Gay lifestyle.
GENERAL OBSERVATIONS:
- The opening-credits camera shots, and especially the soundtrack, seem meant to be ominous in nature and apparently have been structured to forewarn where this film is heading. They consist of lingering, closeup angles of young Martin's striking and sexily hairy body. All this in the guise of a sports program physical exam (oh, of course). Continuing this fascination with Martin's body....later on, after our young trainee has manipulated his way into his coach's home, various intentionally provocative poses of Martin, in near undress, are provided by our Director....culminating in an early morning, "touchy-feely" visit to Sebastian's bed, as he lies sleeping.
- We are given long, sometimes static, film minutes (more than one-tenth film's running time) spent in an automobile front seat. Our Co-leads driving from place to place, as required by the storyline. These are uncomfortable (yet probably realistic) times spent together...with little dialog. Similarly, there are MANY other coach/trainee interactions where one might expect easy chatter/conversation. BUT such does not occur...and that is not what I would expect to happen between a dedicated coach and those he is mentoring (perhaps such is not the case in countries outside the U.S.).
- Young Martin appears not to interact with swimteam mates in a normal, youthful, fun manner...and is shown to roam pool changing rooms, in the hopes of seeing other young men in stages of undress.
- After unsuccessful attempts to get closer to Sebastian during that night spent at the Coach's home, and perhaps ashamed of his actions, Martin quickly owns up. He does so in a note left for Sebastian, reading that he had contrived the overnight stay (BUT he does not specifically spell out what his aim had been). From that point on, Martin begins distancing himself, even missing training sessions. Then occurs an uncomfortable scene in which Coach and his girlfriend (yes, he has one) take seats in a cinema, unaware that Martin and a young female acquaintance are already seated there. One seat separating the 2 men, (as the Director has planned for), we suspensefully wait for awareness of each other to hit the fan.
- Somewhat later, their relationship climaxes (yes, I use that word) in a face to face confrontation: Martin openly admits to his plan for a "hoped-for seduction". ....And Sebastian, realizing the untenable position in which he had been placed, directs a blow to Martin's face, and angry words are exchanged.
- Shortly thereafter, Tragedy Strikes.
We will never know this film's "What Might Have Been". Perhaps even Director Marco Berger cannot know. BUT....in the story's closing 20 minutes, we find ourselves being carried along, within Sebastian's innermost mind, seeing him live each day--though he is acting as in a near-trance. Then, startlingly, we begin experiencing "What Might Have Been" memories of past times spent with Martin (but happening as Sebastian wishes they "might" have occurred). Closing shots take place with the Coach revisiting the darkened and ghostly poolhouse. Then follows a final scene of our Co-leads (yes, both) seeking and finding one another in the semi-darkness: ....a Sweet Kiss....an Admission of Regret....a Request for Forgiveness. And we see, for the very first time in this unhappy film, a tender smile appear on the face of Sebastian.
PS--Oh, face it....I want Romance! (M. B. does it so well)

August (2011)
Sometimes a Re-Tread just doesn't take.....
(( BACKGROUND FOR VIEWERS: This Feature Length film is a reworking of Director Eldar Rapaport's 2005, well received Short, "Postmortem" ))
"August"....whatever is meant by that, you might ask? Well, rather than looking at the title as being merely some play on words, let's just assume what's meant is the "simmering"..."sweat-drenched"..."torridness"...of that particular time in the yearly weather cycle. In fact, this is what becomes visually and audibly obvious to us, as our actors/characters experience sometimes uncomfortably high temperatures---a condition reinforced by repeated soundtrack use of Los Angeles area weathercasts. So, indeed, this film does have "Heat"! ....But, it's not just that sort of "Hotness" which involves us...because "Lovemaking Action" makes up a significant part of what we are seeing in this film.
Still and all, IF a film director is going to expand an earlier released 16 minute Short into a 100 minute Feature Length work....and essentially retain the same storyline and same 2 lead characters (tho now 6 years older)....there has GOT to be more provided than "Heat"....more than "Hotness". Admittedly, a much lessor role in the short film's "triangle of 3 guys" has notably (and most SIZZLINGLY) been expanded in this 2011 production. For now we are seeing the character of "Raul" being torridly played by relative newcomer, Adrian Gonzalez (giving us something not weather-related which definitely IS HOT). Oh, and we also have added a female role in the form of B(Girl)FF (and Green Card facilitator) "Nina", played by Hillary Banks.
At this point, allow this Reviewer to give just a few closing thoughts involving the "old and new" productions, as coming from someone who's lived with the former for years...and with the latter for a couple of viewings:
- In the Short's early scene...involving former lovers meeting once again at an outdoor coffee house...there was an intimacy, a "Heat" between the 2, which burned off the screen and into the viewer. That is pretty much missing in today's re-tread scene and, for me, is due to one actor in particular.
- Adding several extraneous scenery and street-related shots may add minutes to a feature's length....but it does not necessarily add interest.
- I was sometimes left wondering which way writing and film direction were heading with the sex shots. There is an anal sex scene, with virtually a full length, nude shot of the 2 going at it. Yet, at another point we're given an after-sex scene---our leads still together in bed---BUT wearing underwear (even tho the camera is, obviously, avoiding any "crotch shots"). Are we advertising boxer briefs? Is this CBS or NBC network TV filming? Does our director expect this ever to be shown as a K-Thru-12 afternoon school special?
- What I would consider a production glitch involves occasional sound problems, due to music and background conversations drowning out conversation between lead characters (this is even with earphone listening). There is no captioning provided...at least in the Region 2 DVD release.
FINALLY -- Perhaps the best thing I can bring out of this comparison of Short vs. Feature Length film, is that the feature definitely gives us a FINAL Ending...one which cannot be misconstrued, or that is left up in the air. And even better than that....everyone gets what they deserve.
PS -- Writer/Director Rapaport strikes me as being particularly capable of developing intense and interesting story lines; he should stick to doing that...in all-new works. (I do acknowledge it is not easy for anyone to expand a short story into an acclaimed full-length novel...let alone achieve fully successful refilming of an earlier work.)

3 (2010)
"HOT TRIANGLE" doesn't begin to describe this......
.....strangely philosophical and sometimes wondrous take on the Lives & Loves of men and women in today's world. BUT, hold on a sec...hasn't the behavior being shown to us likely EVER been so....even in humankind's earliest days, in the dark protectiveness of caves? ....Well, whether that is the case or not--right now--today, a most perceptive Director of Film (Tom Tykwer) is giving us a stripped bare view into the lives of 2 Men and 1 Woman....the "3" making up this proverbial TRIANGLE. So, Dear Viewer, you need only sit back...relax...then watch and see: ....Their discovery, first, of love with one another---then, finally, their reaching a loving-union of the "3".
I cannot tell you that the Male-Female Hook-up (can we call it "illicit") being shown us is any differently played out than in 100s of movie stories which have come before. BUT...on the other hand, and strikingly so...it is in the Male / Male "Connection" where you will find the Difference in this film. For in a mainstream production such as this, rarely will you ever see shown Physically Realistic (and Tender) lovemaking between 2 men....presented in such a forthright manner. Devid Striesow ("Adam") and Sebastian Schipper ("Simon") absolutely "ZING" in their scenes together. The word, Hot, does not describe it; though if written as HOT, perhaps it begins to do so. (WORD OF ADVICE: Director Tykwer's use of "split screen" techniques throughout, sometimes showing 4 to 6 activities occurring in one scene/shot, makes some of the "HOT actions" a bit difficult to follow and fully enjoy. Better you watch on video....rather than in the theater.)
As to this movie's performers and their abilities, these "3" actors are highly competent and experienced (extensive film histories)....though perhaps not at the level of paparazzi-pursued, top tier German celebs. YET, what they truly give to us is BELIEVABILITY....bringing viewers to the point of SUDDENLY realizing their characters' origin: ....Perhaps from Earth's First Garden---but here, in our world today, we are being given a "Hanna"....a "Simon"....and, most especially, "The Enticer". So, this Enticer; what can be said about him? Well, maybe just this, Reader Mine: ....When your self-image is at its lowest...and your need to be desired is at its highest.....just stop and look around you. HE's out there, close by....waiting, waiting to enfold you in Tenderness and Excitement. Waiting to make the rest of your life its Happiest.
I'll say Goodbye to you now...upon leaving this Garden of "3". And concede that this story may contain instances of over-dramatized familial and midlife crises---not to mention startling images of a male medical procedure. Nevertheless, this is a work which I will be re-watching on a somewhat regular basis---concentrating on the Male / Male action, of course. (Uh..oh).
PS: For those interested, see the excellent Devid Striesow in the very good and "gay-tinged" 2004 film production: "BEFORE THE FALL". That is, IF you can find it available as a rental; used DVD copies are going for a high price. Oh, and for something very "different"...but very well done (in a "straight" love story mode), try Tykwer's 2002 "HEAVEN" (Cate Blanchett). You, likely, will not be sorry.

Hold Your Peace (2011)
I want to be "TRANSPORTED".....
.....at least a Couple of Feet...when I watch a Gay Romance movie.
Sorry to say...this film moved me barely an Inch. Even after a couple of watchings. And here are just a few reasons WHY (I exclude any comment on the storyline, which "itsvivek4u" has already done a good job of providing here on these pages):
- None of the (shared) 4-Leads struck me as being anything other than average actors (tho Blair Dickens, as Forrest, would get my vote for "Stand-Out" in this particular group---and not just because of his above average tallness).
- Lead characters' LIKABLENESS was pretty much Nil for me: dour acting...close-mouthed...whiny...taciturn-looking are just a few of the negative personal traits given these characters by writers and actors (tho, again, Dicken's role was written as more upbeat, more understanding).
- Storyline is stale....having been done 100s of times in heterosexual wedding movies, throughout the history of film.
- Ah, yes...lest I forget The Girls. Since most Gay Romances must give us the B(Girl)FF / Adviser, I'd have to grant that Melissa McCurley, as Samantha, does an OK job. She only butts in, obtrusively, a couple of times (wait...maybe that's supposed to happen---Ugh). The other 3 females on board help stretch out the action...but are not there for much more than that.
- The last minute of the film is a Whirlwind...and I will, again, cede to "itsvivek4u's" (see above) take on that.
Two of the 4-STARs awarded above were added only due to decent cinematography and the acting of Blair / McCurley
I will NOT be keeping this film in my Gay DVD Library.

Romeos (2011)
The Pre-Op & The Lover-Boy.....
"Romeos"....is a Carefree title....a Fun title. BUT, buckle up your seatbelts and hold on tight....for the ride you're about to be taken on is, often, neither carefree nor fun. And why is that? Because, over and over, you'll be asking yourself: HOW is this young guy...this Rick Okon, from a little town in the Northeast fringes of Germany, able to drag us inch by inch by inch into all his emotional turmoil: Into his shyness...his physical discomfort...his fear of discovery...his beginnings of love? ....And while doing so with little more than his frequent arms-hugging-himself poses...his facial expressions...and those dark EYES. Well, the answer is just something you'll have to figure out after the trip. For each of us, it will have been different.
But...forget the "HOW" we've just discussed. More important is the "WHAT"....for what we are being given here is a Near-Equal to the Oscar winning Best Actor performance in 1999's "Boys Don't Cry". That time, Hilary Swank......this time, a rising young German star. As the transgendering Lukas, Okon takes us along on an important part of his journey through the swirling emotions of Hormone Replacement Therapy. And on to complete physical transformation from female-to-male. BUT....in this film, unlike in others, the end goal is to find a same-sex (Male / Male) relationship. About which, please note the following:
(( I can talk about this movie's particular sex-change circumstances in no better way than to paraphrase a quote by Reviewer, "nnenok from Slovenia" (here at IMDb.com): The MOST IMPORTANT lesson this film gives to us and to any already Transgendered-to-Male person (who is attracted to another Male) IS: ...Being attracted to a woman doesn't make you a man---but FEELING like a man does. ))
So...maybe "Boys Don't Cry". Yet, perhaps at times, this film will bring you to the verge of doing so. For what we are seeing is a near breath-taking and heart wrenching performance (I often recall James Dean), about a young, transgendering German who has fallen for a macho Lover-Boy type. Yes, yes, Maximilian Befort, as Fabio, has a face and body which will keep your dreams HOT for days. A Lover-Boy?...sure. A Sex Bomb?...you bet. In fact, he's Sex on a Stick! YET, despite acting self-centered and forever off to the next conquest, his scenes with Lukas are always exciting ones...giving us a gut feel for the Fever which is building up between these 2, a Fever always tempered by fear of Fabio discovering the hidden transgendered condition.
As to Fabio's side of this relationship, he is kept almost always off-balance, and in a perplexed state: Lukas being turned-on by Fabio...quickly followed by instances of Lukas shutting Fabio down. But, still, hard as it is to live with the emotional changes being thrown at him...Fabio does keep trying; he keeps coming back for more. (Leading to this Reviewer's opinion that Lukas has him hooked....letting the line out, then pulling it back--even if not always aware he's doing so).
And so, I TRULY BELIEVE the ending lovemaking scene is giving us The Key to this relationship; oh, yes indeed, it is. BUT, that is not half as much as we are being told by the last few seconds shot, wherein we are watching through the lens of a digital camera...and seeing: A deliriously happy, and completely transgendered Lukas, taking off running into seaside sand dunes toward water's edge. Come on, now....STOP AND THINK about it! That CAN'T be all we're seeing. Because you know what? SOMEONE is holding that camera....You wanna take any bets as to WHO?
Enjoy this Special Movie....And, thank you, Sabine.
PS--And amidst all the turmoil...Thank Heavens for the occasional fun, lightness, and warm support given by terrific young actress, Liv Lisa Fries, as "Ine"...the B(Girl)FF of our Lukas during their growing-up years.

I Want to Get Married (2011)
Don't Let The Cute DVD Cover Suck You In....
....Cause this just ain't what you think it's gonna be.
So, let me be honest with you right up front here. I have NEVER been a great fan of Matthew Montgomery. And despite 15 film roles, for me he has never improved past the point of being an "average" actor. That, and his appearance, as much as anything. There has always been something a little bit "Ratso Rizzo" (for want of a kinder description) about his facial characteristics. So there....now you know how shallow I am.
At last, let's briefly get to the movie, itself (which I tried to watch twice before coming here). ...And by the way, it is a film story of several subplots; in no way does it particularly concentrate on Matthew's character and his idiotic attempts to land the cute man of the cover. Playing an extremely unattractive Super-Geek, the best that Montgomery can bring to the role is a clinching...compressing...contortion of his lips and mouth (and, of course, the supposed-to-be nerdish, black frame glasses). The aforementioned mouth exercising QUICKLY gets very old....while at the same time making it quite difficult to understand our lead's utterances. Worse, this is compounded by one of the most terribly recorded soundtracks I have heard in years. I cannot say enough bad about the original sound-man's work on this film....BUT, Breaking Glass features should be especially ashamed to have their name attached to such a poor sound release.
Finally, it may interest you that, out of the film's near 120 minute running time, Matthew and his bride-to-be (or is it the other way around) are TOGETHER for no more than an amazing 20 minutes of screen time. Leaves a lot to be gotten done in those oh-so-interesting subplots.
My very best advice for you: SAVE YOUR MONEY.

The Green (2011)
More than enough Green.....Too little Cheyenne.......
.......BUT, kidding aside, this well done work just CANNOT be put into a near 10-STAR rating category, such as enjoyed by "Brokeback Mountain". (Read on for my take as to Why).
Co-Lead performances are of a Good to near Very Good level (but not at that peak achieved by Ledger and Gyllenhaal). Supporting character efforts, particularly female, are very capable....BUT, think back to those we were given, and saw, 6 years ago.
Storyline / Plot (which has been well covered for us by Old Churns-em-Out): I have to award this factor a "Not so much". What we are given is the male teacher suspected / accused of inappropriate contact with a student (okay, yes...this time a young man--but even that's been done before). Then, there's the cautionary advice being given--which we all know will be ignored. And added to the mix are a hidden truth...a misunderstanding...a breakup of lovers---all fairly stock story directions.
AND...none could guess the REAL Bad Guy?? C'mon!!
What I do like, and very much so, is the way in which the ending has been handled. Not all "Sweetness & Flowers"....not "All is Forgiven". INSTEAD.....there is Hope. We are shown Hope.
PS--And speaking of those 4 small letters, which can mean so much in anyone's world.....you movie lovers out there should TAKE HOPE. Because there is yet another little "Teacher / Student" film story now working its way through world film festivals, toward a video release for we Stay-at-Home viewers. And it is one for which I have extremely High Hopes.....hopes stemming from a Newbie Director's last, best effort. That being a great little film called, "Plan B" (what's not to like about that one). This new and now out-on-the-circuit production is titled "ABSENT", and is directed by a young Marco Berger.

Stadt Land Fluss (2011)
Whatever is it's Genre???
(( NOTE: 1-STAR added for high degree of location / setting authenticity which was captured ON FILM. Otherwise, Story...Acting...Camera Work would have been rated 5-STARS ))
Described at many DVD sales sites as more of a Gay Romance....here at IMDb.com it is labeled a Drama. Neither of these descriptions is "mostly" correct....and for why, read on.
In the Director's words, this is a film he calls "The Farm" (perhaps being titled "Harvest" is more marketable for American distribution). Also in Benjamin Cantu's own words, this is more a "Documentary" (at least, a semi-one), rather than a film falling completely in either of the 2 Genres mentioned above. Now, in order for you to relate more easily to this film and its location, think of it as being a take off on the United State's "F"uture "F"armers of "A"merica. ....BUT, here in this film, it is a story taking place on the far outskirts of Berlin, in an agricultural school established to intern / train the "FFG". Note that farm life and activities are quite realistically portrayed, right down to the actual use of farm machinery and the handling of animals (this is a working farm). Yes, there is a "side story" in which we are given scenes of the developing "relationship" between 2 young, male trainees (the only professional actors in this film; the many other persons you see being actual agricultural school students and their instructors).
As for my general impression of the storyline, I find it one which transports us into a deeply agricultural environment....BUT does so somewhat "aimlessly". There are "Shifts" in plot directions and actions being shown us which seem to occur without meaning (aimlessness also exists within that "personal relationship" we are waiting to see develop). Dialog, by the writer / director's own admission, is often unscripted or improvisational, and there is much reliance upon "looks" and "glances" to get a point....or a feeling across to us.
And as for what we are all waiting to see occur (due to the "romantic sales pitch" often given this movie), physical contact between the 2 leads is very slow in coming....and amounts to nothing other than upper body contact. Kissing scenes are particularly mishandled, due to poor camera angles and even worse use of lighting. Still, both of the Straight actors playing characters "Marko and Jakob", are fairly adept at portraying the qualms of "coming out" and facing up to a first affair. Kai-Michael Müller, as "Jakob", is particularly able at expressing such feelings. Lukas Steltner's "Marko", who we follow from film's beginning, is more stoic in nature (due likely to his character's more "iffy" family background).
At best, I see this as an "intermittently Gay" film, which I will NOT be keeping in my Film Library for this Genre.

The One (2011)
Tommy fakes us out....puts one over on.......
.......almost all of us. (Read on to find out how).
(( This isn't as well done as "Shelter".....nor quite as good as "Latter Days".....BUT it's not far off their mark ))
A CAST OF ENGAGING CHARACTERS (making up the Devilish and Age-old TRIANGLE):
- Tommy Miller (Guy #1) - (played by: Ian Novick) ---- To date, a smaller parts actor. Yet, this film shows he merits so much more....if nothing else, for the cute hunkiness and honesty he brings to Tommy....a Guy who grabs our hearts....a Guy who's In Pursuit. "T" is Open...he's Out...knows the man he wants....and he takes us along on the joyride to get him. He's an upfront Guy, who tells it like it is. A Mister Personality....most definitely deserving of that capital "P". Of our two male lead characters, Tommy's "The One" you're most likely to fall for. And you will have a ball while doing so.
- Daniel (Guy #2) - (played by: Jon Prescott) ---- Lots of TV series work....yet with a plum film role in 2010's gay-related, "Howl", playing the James Franco character's oft-time lover. Here, in this story, he's playing the built and pretty Daniel....an emotionally torn man, suffering a severe case of "Closetophobia". Perhaps now's a good time for the question: WHO is the love of this man's life? Is it the fiancé and wife-to-be? Or is it, perhaps....what's that Guy's name, again? Oh, and you should watch for what is, to me, the somewhat puzzling way in which Prescott plays this role: facially expressive with other characters in the film.....BUT, strangely, often detached looking / fairly expressionless in his scenes with Tommy.
(( AN ASIDE ABOUT DANIEL ---- Did ANY of you out there, having seen this film, realize how very many guys Daniel's life represents? A man, like so many of us, who becomes engaged...marries and fathers a child....all the while never facing up to who he is sexually. How many of us are living this kind of life, one which Family...Society...expects of us? A life which is not really our own...not who we really are? Should it be at all surprising how many of us are Daniels ))
- Jen (The One Stuck in the Middle) - (played by: Margaret Anne Florence) ---- Quite a bit of TV work...with 3 or so lesser movies thrown into the mix. Jen is a pert and pretty gal, as both fiancée and bride. A level headed woman, very much in love with her man. YET, she's a someone who unknowingly comes to meet and grow quite friendly with "The Other Man". In doing so, Florence pulls it off in a most believable manner. Even though you and I are watching her through guys' eyes....she'll MAKE us deeply feel both her happiness and her despair. Be prepared.
A LAST THOUGHT (I told you at the beginning to watch for this):
- For those of you UNhappy with the way in which this film SEEMINGLY ends....in a less than romantic way (yes, I've looked at your reviews and displeasure here and there)....just read on.
- Aaah, yes. So, Tommy...Our Mister Upfront Guy. See...right about here is where you movie watchers should be remembering...recalling that really important thing he's already told us (more than once). What? What is it, you ask? ....THAT HE IS IN LOVE...IN TRUE LOVE..(something he's also told the object of his affection). SO...you doubters out there....put all such thoughts aside. For there is NO way in which a man like the Tommy we've come to know...with his depth of feelings...would just walk away from "The One". From that person who he just learned has again become available. NO way in which a caring sort like Tommy would leave another man waiting at the altar. Unless.....UNLESS he has very definite plans to reenter the life of "The One" (though he may wait a bit...just to make a Someone squirm). And if you think otherwise about this, then "T" has, indeed, Totally Faked you out. So....BUCK UP!...CHEER UP!......in the REAL ending of this film, you're going to get exactly what you were hoping for. HAPPY viewing!
PS: If you're not starving....it'd be worth your bucks to buy an All-Regions DVD player and try these 3 great little films (probably for more mature Gays): "Four More Years" /// "He Is My Girl" /// "Different From Whom?" (I've done reviews).
Fyra år till (2010)
"All's Fair in Love & Politics".....should have been the......
.....title of this Great little Swedish film (actually released as: "Four More Years")
(( RATING ADVISORY XXXX RATING ADVISORY: NC-90 / 18----No one under Age 90 will be allowed NOT to see this movie ))
A CAST OF CHARACTERS (by order of importance, naturally):
- David Holst (Our Guy) - (played by: Björn Kjellman) ---- He's our Starched & Proper Male Lead, a Swedish Liberal Party big-wig. We meet as he's attempting to win an election against the currently in-power Opposition Party Prime Minister. Already married for 12 years to a strong, strong woman who manages his career, Our David is, in reality, a "Lost Liberal" adrift in a marriage of convenience. More to the point, he is, EMOTIONALLY, this wee, shivery lamb of a guy who we just want to reach out for and enfold to our breasts. Anyway, Readers, perhaps his situation is not so bad as all that. For at the least, he is nice looking...pleasant in temperament...and usually in control---when not being yelled at. (Oh, and he wears great neckties). YET...yet, what he really, REALLY needs is simply to meet "That Person" who can show him what he has been missing for about 40 years of his life....and then introduce him to WHO he really is. -- (( An Aside for your viewing pleasure...I don't think "That Person" is too far off right about now )).
- Martin Kovac - (played by: Eric Ericson...how original) ---- Good Golly....he's here already: "That Person" I just mentioned to you. And in the very pleasing form of our Male Co-Lead....who is Hunky....who is Charming....and who is (Yikes!) "OUT". Oh, my...oh, my. But even worse for Our Guy is that the delightful Martin is (Gulp!) an Up-and-Comer in the Opposition Party...you remember, the one David is trying to defeat. Nevertheless, Martin is Cool...he's Fun...he's Smooth, and oh so easy to be with. Always sunny-tempered and as steadfast as the Rock of Gibraltar. He's just the kinda guy everybody gravitates to. An even better way to see him is as "That Person" who will become the Shepherd to David's Little Lost Lamb. -- (( Leaving Martin for now, I'll just say that, out of everyone, this is the Guy I REALLY fell for. You wait and see for yourselves....he makes it so easy to do )).
- Fia Holst - (played by: Tova Magnusson...our Director, herself -- Who is, apparently, a "Bi-Something" or other) ---- This character is a "Man of Steel" (oops....I mean "Woman of ....."). And, as David's wife, she is sometimes a little Bitchy (well, if you were in this kind of marriage, wouldn't you be?). Fia is just a no-holds-barred Gal who, despite some surface gruffness, will come to recognize and accept what is in her best interests and those of her (Our) Guy. Actually, toward film's end you will definitely see her getting exactly what is coming to her...what she deserves (I know this may sound "harsh"....but you'll probably be laughing your heads off anyway). -- (( Leaving Fia for now, let me just say, look closely...and you'll find she is working on a little Surprise of her own )).
- Mamma Holst - (played by: Inger Heyman) ---- A hard-as-nails Roofer (er...I mean Mother) who often calls her son, David, whatever-the-Swedish-word-for-Schmuck is. She pulls no punches when it comes to telling him what he SHOULD HAVE done.
- Barbro.."The Shocker" - (played by: Lisbeth Johansson) ---- Kudos by the Dozen to whoever was smart enough to put into the script, this priceless character and the words that come out of her mouth. In a scene shot at dawn, she is on her knees, peeking into and knocking on a small, ground level bedroom window....trying to grab the attention of our rudely awakened David....as he's attempting to keep her from seeing "That Person" in the bed he's just jumped from. Folks, this is an Hilarious...Almost-Caught-Red-Handed scene. You'll be falling off your seats laughing.
GENERAL THOUGHTS....PLUS SOME THINGS THIS FILM CAN TEACH YOU:
- And these 2 Hot Swedes are one of the cutest couples you'll ever run into (there's nothing Cold about Sweden)
- And did you know that wearing the wrong shoe size can lead to meeting (running into, actually) the Love of Your Life?
- And be wary of elevators....just one short ride with a certain "Someone"...and a person can become Smitten
- And what do you do when he's innocently standing there...spouting political parables? Why, you lean into...and kiss him, of course (Yummy)
- And this is a movie where you really get to find out what a guy might do to a Horny Baptist. So, like it or not....Take that!
- And when asking your Lover how many "Others" BEFORE you....ask only for a Ballpark Figure (saves Heartache)
- And have you EVER heard of "Punitive Wanking"? (Just think about it....Mustn't you punish yourself for having Impure Thoughts)
- And when you've caused a "Someone" to walk away.....That's when your heart feels Torn Out. Absolutely Wrenched from your chest!
- And, oh yes, there are Sad Moments....Misunderstanding Moments (BUT....don't you Folks out there dare give up on this)
- And now for My Final AND -- Bright RED...is the very best Color for these 2 Lovely Guys. Trust me...in the end, it is the color which will Warm Your Hearts!
TWO FINAL NOTES:
- The DVD Extras "Behind The Scenes" shots are not captioned. NEVERTHELESS, you can easily tell these 2 Leads are having a ball with one another between shots. Makes for a Good and Fun Production, doesn't it?
- (You'll never have guessed): I've fallen in love with this movie.....Well, these 2 Guys, actually....David & Martin. Indeed, it's hard not to go back and revisit them every few days.
La folle histoire d'amour de Simon Eskenazy (2009)
You might even want to make love to a.......
.....Clarinet! Well, go on....at least consider it. Believe me....it ain't that "Hard" to do (***see below)
ALTERNATE TITLE FOR THIS REVIEW: You have NEVER met a Boy?...Girl?...Boy?....like this one! WHY, you may ask? Well, because He's?...She's?...He's?...(oh, I give up trying to decide)...just the GREATEST EVER! And to top that off, I've now found my new Boyfriend?...Girlfriend?...Boyfriend?...(#*$*&*...cuss...cuss).
A CAST OF CHARACTERS (by order of importance, naturally):
- The CLARINET - (plays Himself) ---- And not just any Clarinet....BUT one of the sweetest sounding...playful...sexually arousing woodwinds you are ever likely to meet (er, I mean hear).
- Simon Eskenazy (Our Guy) - (played by: Antoine de Caunes) ---- The adorable(yes, he really is) Male Lead....and Clarinetist Extraordinaire! This is a guy who says so much....by saying so little. A guy who seems to have experienced it ALL---sexual partner-wise. Believe me, you're going to wind up Envying this fellow....to the MAX.
- Naim (or is it Habiba?...or perhaps Angela?) - (also the reason for the Envy) - (played by: Mehdi Dehbi) ---- A PHENOMENAL actor...who is the subject of all the Question Marks in my Alternate Review Title, up above. Despite confusion over these 3 character names, there's really no doubt that this one is a "HE"....but just to be on the safe side, in future I'll only refer to him as "This Person". Anyway, you're going to fall in love with This Person. I know I did....and I said so above, did I not?
- Mama "Bella" - (played by: Judith Magre) ---- The witty and smart Mother of our Male Lead---a sharp-tongued, but loving, woman who is never afraid to call her son out as a "Schmuck!" (but only when he needs it)
- Rosalie - (played by: Elsa Zylberstein) ---- Our Guy's "Ex" (wife), as you've never, ever seen a gay man's Ex before. Possessed of a great singing voice, she is also phenomenal (with a little "p"). Watch her ultimate acceptance at film's end (check out her dancing partner). Although engaged, with a marriage ceremony only days away, do any of you out there also think she's, maybe, still in love with our Simon?
A COUPLE OF OBSERVATIONS:
- This is one of the most colorfully-peopled films you are likely to see---almost breathtakingly so (what great costuming....and cinematography).
- Amazing...and sad...that I found this film only available as a Region 2 version (requiring an All-Regions player). Peraps you'll be more lucky.
AND GENERAL THOUGHTS: Perhaps the Best Way to tell you a little more about this great film is just to list some of the wonderful, funny, sad (not many), emotion-grabbing events and moments which have made it so special for me (take a look at the film for yourself, and see where we may differ and agree on these):
- And a Clarinetist always plays his best....with a guy in his bed
- And NEVER get stuck in an elevator with your Mother
- And sometimes having facial hair can result in....your getting to sleep in longer (try it and see)
- And remember the specific amount: 4000 Euros (that's almost $5800 US)....BUT This Person is worth it
- And beware of rude, white-bearded men, all in Black (they can really put a damper on things)
- And you gotta love that the one who winds up snoring in a scene....turns out to be the one it is
- And when you turn around....you never know who'll be there---perhaps someone in Black (smirk)
- And...ye gods...Obama makes yet another appearance (see 1st "Aside", below)
- And, lastly, if you think you've walked into "Fiddler on the Roof" by mistake.....you haven't
TWO ASIDES:
- All you Obama fans (and others, of course) are invited and encouraged to try another great little film. This time it's a Mediterranean Number---Italy's marvelous Love Triangle, entitled "Different From Whom" (check my review.....and don't forget your All-Regions DVD player, you'll need it).
- A little Secret for some of you who've enjoyed this film: There was a 1998 "prequel" to this production (same Director and main Actors)---Titled, "Man Is A Woman"---Enjoy!
***No, no....you shouldn't have jumped to conclusions. What I meant, up top at the beginning, was: Listen to one "Playing"....WHILE you're making love. (Nasty minds, tsk...tsk)
****
Diverso da chi? (2009)
Maybe not quite the "Brokeback Mountain" of gay romantic comedies...but.....
.....this one is SO close (and I'll likely be taken off Your List for making this comparison). It's an Italian production but, Hey....the US certainly doesn't have much to offer in this particular genre.
(( WARNING.....WARNING...Will Robinson (oops, sorry about that): The ONLY way I know that you Gay, fun-loving types out there are going to be able to view a purchased copy of this Region 2 DVD is if you already have....or obtain an All-Regions player** / Players made for US produced DVDS are programmed to play Region 1 discs, only ))
NOTE: Since I pretty much know there is going to be a "particular type" among the readers discovering this review, let me just say the following to them up front. "Don't get your briefs in a twist, all you "R-G-M-C" (Rigid-Gay-Male-Chauvinist) guys out there." And why saith I this? Because there is a Woman DEEPLY involved in this film....and she ain't no Fag-Hag. Oh, no....she's a Gorgeous Specimen. SO, Folks....with all this introduction now out of the way, here goes:
This gorgeous guy....this hunky Main Man (Luca Argentero as "Piero") REALLY throws himself into the role of a Gay aspiring politico (running for town mayor, don't you know). He's emotionally up...emotionally down....he's funny...he's sad....and, yes, sometimes frantic. Yet, in the end he will have wound up being our "Mr. Faithful". He holds nothing back....there are streaks of brilliance.
Then there is Piero's "Partner in Love and Life"....this lovable guy named "Remo" (Filippo Nigro, better than he ever was when playing one of our own in 2001's "The Ignorant Fairies"). Remo is a role which provides the critically needed balance to Argentero's often frenetic (but always loving) Piero. Oh, by the way, when you think things might be "starting to go South" for the guy....do NOT begin feeling sorry for Remo. Because, in the end, we will realize that it is Filippo's Powerhouse performance which has become the Glue holding the 3 sides of this Triangle together. What a Guy!
OH, BOY...OH, BOY....and now is where the tricky part comes in. Despite possible concern I may have (Ha!) for all you "R-G-M-C's" (see above), there's no way I could skip over discussion of the 3rd Spoke of this film's "Wheel". If there is anything phenomenal (and there is) about the acting chops of the two guys just mentioned, there can be nothing less phenomenal about this SuperHot lady---the one giving this story a huge spin on its rolling path through Love...Laughs....Up-times...Down-times....and on to a Happy Resolution. Though new to me, Italian Star, Claudia Gerini (as "Adele") has just become the new love of my life (my No. 1 just moved to No. 2). Wow! This blonde bombshell is terrific.....you just gotta discover that for yourself.
A Great supporting cast made up of politicians...electioneering helpers...family. And they are all First-rate (and funny). One, in particular, is a Standout: Rinaldo Rocco as Samuele....a "light in the heels" little fellow who will grab your heart. Psst....just for the fun of it, watch closely in the background of several shots. There you'll often see the sweetly kooky Samuele...with his Straight (but then is he) Tagalong counterpart, always at his side. Methinks our Sammy is conducting a bit of "Conversion Therapy" in and between these scenes. (Can IT really rub off?)
ALMOST FINALLY -- And closing out on a light note, here are some things you may never have discovered....but which this film will teach you:
- And did any of you real, or aspiring, politicos out there know that a Gay bashing's broken leg and cracked jaw can get you ahead in the polls a whole 4 Points? (Leave it to the Italians to tell us how to better succeed at things)
- And if you thought you'd heard it all about "Immaculate Conception" (or an almost-one, at any rate)....just stay tuned
- And were any of you aware that, if you get a dog, you have a better chance of picking up guys
- And that if you have on your political team (am not sure if the "kind" of team matters), a someone called "Freddie Mercury", or an even more strangely named, "Barack Obama".....you are always going to wind up a Winner
PARTING THOUGHT -- In the end, I hope those of you grown up folks out there (and lots of young people)....who are struggling to understand feelings of sexual uncertainty....find that this film (and especially its title) points you in the direction of the solutions you are seeking. Whether we be Heterosexual / Homosexual / Bisexual, we should always Stop....Take a Count....and question of ourselves: If we "ARE" different.....then just ask, "DIFFERENT FROM WHOM?"
PS -- With a last breath, let me suggest what is a Real (and only) shame involving this film: That its Native Italian son and Director (Umberto Riccioni Carteni) did not, at that time, enjoy the same Cinema stature as Adopted Italian son and Director (Turkish born Ferzan Ozpetek). Not only that, but had the same multitude of commercial and advertising forces used on Ozpetek's latest ("Loose Cannons"), been in play for the wonderful work I've just reviewed here, then quite another story about "Different From Whom?" might find a place in the world's cinematic history books.
PPS -- Oh, and don't forget to grab a look at 2009's "Handsome Harry".....along with my review (thankfully, it's even shorter than the preceding).
** From a personal point of view, I consider this film worthwhile enough to justify expenditure for an All-Regions DVD Player. Another plus is you can often find earlier DVD releases overseas. (Another possible source for the DVD of this film is Amazon.com/Italy).

You Should Meet My Son! (2010)
"You Should Meet My Mom & Auntie!"...... (What a "HOOT!"....Oh, wait, I......
......think I just dated myself. I meant to say: What a "BLAST!" What's that you're saying....I'm still talk'n like an old guy. Okay, okay...just whisper it to me. Ah...now I get it: What a "KICK-ASS!" pair these two ladies are.
And I obviously agree with you. This Mom and this Aunt are all those Capital letters, above....rolled up together (and even more so, aren't they). What Gay youngster, having been thrown out on the streets of this world, wouldn't give for a mother and father, or any family member, like either Momma Mae or Auntie Rose? (They really deserve at least a half-Star, extra)
Since you've probably already seen other reviews / comments outlining this story, let me only add that it is, basically, just the tale of a Gay young man, afraid to Come Out to the family. Yet, what makes this one pretty special is the verve.....the life.....the acceptance that just pours off the screen, and out over us, from these two marvelous ladies.
Oh, and are there ANY bases not covered by first-time, feature length Director, Keith Hartman? Hmm...let's see now....I recall that they include:
1 - Loss of the long-time boyfriend (don't worry...he doesn't die).
2 - Discovery by family of someone's "abnormal" sexual orientation (a Big 6 on the Kinsey Scale).
3 - Struggle over Acceptance.
4 - Search for a suitable replacement, needed due to Item 1, above. (Doesn't hurt he's a gorgeously hunky go-go dancer, wearing tight briefs)
5 - Attempt by "Kinsey 6" at a Heterosexual lifestyle.
6 - Consideration of enrollment in a Gay Conversion Therapy program.
7 - Time spent in cleaning up all the Holy Mess....created by Items 1 thru 6, above.
8 - THE END
PS--(It's a lot of Fun + Laughs----You'll enjoy it)

Easier with Practice (2009)
Davy....You seem so unhappy........
(( "Davy" is a character who can be considered as one with deeply intertwined emotional / behavioral problems ))
Whether this movie's background is just story writer, Rothbart's own....or part his life / part fiction....or just a tale made up for a fictional Davy, is not the important thing here. Instead, what we need to focus on is that the lead we are given in this film unquestionably comes across as having had much more than usual problems in relating to females. Specifically, females with whom he has attempted to become more than just friends. With all other people in his life, Davy seems a likable sort....that is when, or if, they even realize he is around (he often seems "overlooked").
I truly believe that what this film shows us, intentionally or not, is that Davy is way more unhappy than we see on the surface.....and will likely always be unhappy. Why? Because he is trying to live up to the "norms" which society is forever instilling in us. But, what Davy (and all of us) need to discover is that when we have met a person who has grown all-important to us, a someone we have come to love and want to spend our future with.....THEN, such things as our color...our sex...and other factors should not be deciding ones. If we BOTH want this THING.....then that is the way it should be. Take a chance.
At film's end Davy chose, either from fear or lack of desire, NOT to take that step. Or did he....after that fading scene? Was there....should there have been....a later chapter for Davy?
PS--Oh, Davy, take a chance.....See if it will make you happy!
Outpost (2009)
"Outpost".....a Director's first try.........
(( I bought it.......I'm stuck with it.......But I won't be throwing it out** ))
A near college level production (considering current day videoing capabilities), this "semi-short" film's primary problem involves acting levels, which rarely exceed average.....and sometimes don't reach that. The actor portraying our lead's earlier lover pretty much lacks competency.....while even our main guy (in his older aged version) seems sometimes wooden. Most acceptable performances are by the actor playing our lead's earlier self.....and that young actor playing the lead's later in life pursuer / would-be love interest. To be fair, I must give credit to actress, Nancy Berggren (in a first filmed role), for her portrayal of the grand motherly boarding house and bar owner. (These last 3 pull my film rating vote up).
As far as physical evidence of any romance is concerned, I find myself, again, needing to say that if a US director (they're generally the worst at this) is going to have a male couple kiss.....then for the love of mike, why not instruct them HOW. To at least move their mouths while doing so (make us see it---the other guy isn't poison, after all). If actors in a gay-themed film are, in fact, "straight".....and afraid to kiss passionately, why the hell were they ever hired!!
Finally.....Yes, there possibly is a saving grace for this film. And it is that this director (unlike so many others in the US) does NOT try to make some indecipherable statement out of the story's ending....such as some weird thing about "everlasting" love. He just lets his tale play out....in real people fashion. So, then, let me say in plain English for all you possible viewers out there, that means there is a.......Happy Ending.
**(you bet I have....many times)
