Civil War (2024)
I expected so much more... what a joke of a movie
After reading glowing reviews and knowing the great cast, my bf and I could not have been more let down with this $20 rental.. It was literally like an episode of "the last of us" -without the creatures of course- but way less thought provoking. No idea why any of this was happening, who was fighting who, stupid insipid characters especially the young brilliant eager photographer who inexplicably takes pictures with actual film and develops them outside in daylight... does she send them to the newspapers or online outlets in the mail? I mean, everything about this movie rang false, and we were left annoyed, unprovoked, and wishing we had watched anything but this. It should have been a limited series on HBO, with the characters and plot (was there one?) much more fleshed out, and the different factions who were fighting explained. And a totally ridiculous ending. Nothing about this movie felt genuine or probable, except obviously the notion that a Trump like president could happen again and cause civil war, but this movie played it out in a totally one-dimensional way.
The Holdovers (2023)
Trying so hard to be an old earnest tearjerker...
We found this movie to be so damn boring and insipid. One of my all time fave movies is "Sideways", and boy did they not re-create any magic on this joint with same director/actor. It was trying so hard to be earnest and nostalgic and touching. Like AI made it. It was basically a Lifetime movie of the week but with cred. Do yourself a favor and watch Harold and Maude or any number of 70's movies that did what this one was trying for and failed. Can't believe Da'Vine won a Golden Globe for this "performance" with zero nuance or real range. Paul Giamatti is always good/great, but this was just re-warmed Sideways. You know how a good-ish movie is so much worse when there is so much hype and a very high Rotten Tomatoes score? This is perfect example.
Fire Island (2022)
Horrible... I'm turning in my gay card. As deep as a puddle in the Meat Rack
This movie is just beyond insipid. Horrible pacing, high school play acting...the writing is atrocious and if you give one damn about any of the characters I would be shocked. I didn't expect amazing, but just how truly bad this is, and how it makes my people look, is just super depressing and a huge waste of 105 minutes of my life. If this movie attracts more gays to Fire Island, watch out 'cause the scene is gonna get even more vapid and gross. I have zero idea why anyone would give this drivel a good review. It was trying to be the "Boys in the Band" of Fire Island 2022, but boy did it miss the mark.
Julia: Breads (2022)
BORING episode... and so odd!
Truly bad episode of this otherwise lovely swell show. Badly written, badly directed, and just really lame pacing/story/energy. The characters in the show were so often so bored they were falling asleep watching her do her show, and I felt the same way watching this episode.
Roar: The Woman Who Disappeared (2022)
Wtf was that!?
Love love love Isa, but I have zero idea what they were trying to convey in this episode other than that white people don't "see" Black people, and obviously racism is endemic in our society. Just left me feeling like what a waste of talent and time, and nothing was fleshed out- no pun intended. Ugh. Hope the other episodes have some substance.
The Vow (2020)
Interesting but a slog to get through!
Should have been at most 4 hours. All the minutia is just numbing after first few episodes. And OMG it's gonna have another season!?!? How much can they milk this cult for? Somehow I still felt like lots was still missing. If you're up for an endurance test this just might be for you.
