Secrets of the Railways (2019)
Interesting but Repeatitive
The rail stories in these documentaries are very interesting. However it's one of those documentaries with three or four commentators who basically make the same observation on a particular aspect one after the other. It all feels like
padding to stretch the show out. I find that very annoying. More judicious editing in post-production please.
Rome: What Lies Beneath (2013)
It's all about Sarah really
This documentary is somewhat dumbed down but reasonable. However, the whole thing comes across as a self-promoting vehicle for archaeologist Sarah Parcak. It's all Sarah this and Sarah that. We hear about Sarah's dreams as a child of travelling in space, how her grandfather surveyed from a plane and hear how Sarah agonises over the data. We also get of shots of Sarah jogging at home and Sarah jogging on site. Why do we need to see Sarah jogging? What has that got to do with archaeology? I lost count of the times the narrator uses the dreaded word "Sarah". Very annoying. It reminds me of talent shows like The Voice which is more about the judges than the talent. Oh well, we do live in the age of narcissism I suppose.
