A Killer Among Us (2012)
Script writer has no knowledge of police procedure!
I walked in the house to find my wife watching this. It was about half-way through and she was less than impressed; she said she was bored but could find nothing else on to watch. So, I sat watched the second half of the movie with her. This movie is awful. The script-writer, evidently, has no knowledge of police procedure, he certainly showed little indication that he knew anything about criminal law and police. Even though the character who is main police officer involved gets reprimanded for mishandling procedure by endangering a minor, his boss, evidently the chief of detectives, allows him to enter the family home alone! (Right at the moment of being reprimanded, the detective realized the girl must have met up with her step father while retrieving the gun for the police.) I found this whole plot device ludicrous; he had probable cause to go in to search the home. When he went in knowing the teen girl was in trouble, he went in alone! Wretched. Internal Affairs were watching him, but they should have also been watching the entire department. Overly dramatic too.
Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
X Files meets Aliens meets John Ford
Had I seen just the plot description, I would have not considered this for a second but....Stephen Spielburg, Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig...these guys don't do rotten movies, so I took a chance. I was glad I did. It is not "great serious cinema", but it is a good two hours worth of entertainment. This movie does require the willing suspension of disbelief but once the general premise is swallowed, the rest is somewhat plausible. The action is great. Sets and costuming are traditionally Western/Sci-fi. Monsters were not outright copies of something else. Character development is workmanlike. Good popcorn ending. Daniel Craig carries over his Bond fighting skills and, my god does he remind me of Steve McQueen! Western shots include a lot of the John Ford Big Sky/wide vistas stuff with bands of riders going forth (good stuff for Saturday afternoons). Alien motivation is not too far-fetched. Gold is an unique element and just may be suitably rare in outer space.
The Weight of Water (2000)
yachting info for Robert Maxwell
I liked the movie; got my mind moving. Intriguing thought piece. I thought Sean Penn was convincing. He was basically a jerk and his character was not necessarily a lapsed poet, just someone who may be a poser; a pretender. He posed as a lapsed poet, never having had any talent other than seduction; a common university type. About the sea anchor--would work if they were not so close to the islands and the rocks. They were not far enough out to sea. They were in an awful fix. The best place to be would be as far to sea as possible or in the best possible sheltered cove. But their boat was very close to land in bad weather and they were fighting an onshore gale. It was just the classic harrowing sea story.
