Black Hawk Down (2001)
Idiotic violence
The movie depicts Somali militia as a bunch of black, vicious monsters who should be killed, and they are - in thousands.
I've never seen a more obvious propaganda movie than this one - no wonder US army agreed to lend their choppers.
How convenient for then, to have such a release in the wake of the second Iraq war.
And the image of Somali people clapping as the Rangers run their Mogadishu Mile is the most silly I've ever seen.
Shame on you, Ridley Scott, for tapping into testosterone-fulled, "patriotic", cruel redneck fears.
Summer of Sam (1999)
You've gotta love New York.
I read some shallow comments that the movie features "rude New Yorkers with no morals and brain" and "reminds me to never go there". New Yorkers have to deal with extraordinary stress of living in a big city, full of cut-throat competition, crime, temptations and sensory overload, have to learn the street survival, but still manage to have a heart. Adrian Brody's character survives via acting in porno movies with his girlfriend and male-prostitution, while still managing to pursue his love of music and maintaining a loving relationship with his family. John Leguizamo's character deals with sexual temptations surrounding him everywhere, conflicting with the genuine love for his wife. Local mob wants to protect the neighborhood from a serial killer, because the police is helpless. All three are perfect examples of maintaining heart and soul in a ruthless environment. That's why, you've gotta love New York.
Aprile (1998)
What a bore, despite one priceless image
Bore, bore, bore... We've seen it all elsewhere. Nothing was funny, nothing was new. The only 5 minutes worth watching were those showing an overcrowded rusty ship, heavy with Albanian immigrants arriving to Venice. I wish this subject had been developed further, but it wasn't. Instead we have a silly film director who does not know what he wants until he has a son and appreciates the joy of life. How true, but how banal, who cares, we all know it...
The Slumber Party Massacre (1982)
I liked it's wicked sense of humor
I've watched quite a few horror movies, and my goal is always to laugh at them. The Slumber Party Massacre had some great laughs. My favorite scene was when Val's kid sister repeatedly opened the fridge in search for a beer, not knowing what's really in it... And of course, the pizza eating scene is so hilarious, that it becomes an instant classic. The sarcastic dialog provides even more laughs and the shower scene in the beginning is very appealing. Not a blast, but pretty good fun.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Everybody hurts
Everybody hurts. Three young New York junkies. A lonely mother. A hedonistic drug dealer. A cruel Wall Street banker. A North Carolina prison guard. A Bible Belt doctor...
And, as Harry cleverly points out, everybody has his or her fix...
Harry's (and his friends') pain is having feelings, sensitivity and compassion in the cruel, isolating, materialistic world of the U.S. of A. His fix is heroine. When he takes it , the reality is gone for a little while and he lives a beautiful dream. He laughs. He's happy.
Harry's mother's pain is loneliness and low self-esteem, typical to U.S. women, so conditioned to be good mothers, good wives and good looking. Nothing more (an excellent movie "Safe", with Julianne Moore, shows that perfectly). Her fix is television, food and appreciation of her neighbors, all of this leading to her final demise.
Tim's fix is sex. He's so unattractive that the only way for him to get it is paying for it. With heroine (it's addictive so they will come back...). And his way to get heroine is to organize sickening sex parties for wealthy NYC bankers, who cheer up two naked women having an anal intercourse on the table. They stick money into their mouths. They degrade them beyond belief. Why? Because they possess an inherit cruelty fueled since childhood by violent cartoons, displayed since childhood by torturing bugs? Because their boss degraded them this morning and they want to forget?
And the only reason the women do it is because they want heroine, the escape, the short dream... One of the women is Harry's love, beautiful Marion, as Tim calls her, lady Marion from a Robin Hood tale ... Even Tim has a dream...
Prison guard's fix is revenge, he leads an unhappy painful, trained, conditioned life. So he gets back at prisoners, 'those dirty New York junkies'...
Doctor's fix is following the Bible. A junkie is bad. The Bible (although 2000 years old) is good. Put the junkie to prison and you will go to heaven...
But what started this whole exposure of misery and inadequacy, was a young boy Harry and his girlfriend, Marion, who wanted to escape from a cruel, loveless, money-driven world. Who wanted to have a dream...
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Gives you perspective, doesn't it?
I saw it. I got hungry! But fortunately I am a vegetarian, so I ate some beans and rice. I think this movie goes to the bottom of things. We are all made of flesh and blood... We all deal with our bodily functions... Think of it next time you want to glamorize a celebrity! It is a person and you can eat it!
All the materialistic junk does not change the fact that we all are here to be born, live, and die... We need movies like this.
The People's Court (1997)
Best By Far!!!
Judge Marylin Millian's intelligence, wit, charm and INCREDIBLE yet tasteful sense of humor, combined with integrity, honesty, respect and caring, makes this show a blast since she took over in 2001. Since then, she managed to have another baby (she's only 39, has 3 little kids and lives in Miami) and quickly resumed her TV career, getting better and better. I could never stand other TV court shows, and now it's the only thing on TV I am regularly taping! Great entertainment, great intellectual stimulant, best hour on TV, eye opener, occasional shocker, not to be missed!!! Watch this passionate, beautiful Cuban genius in action and you'll see why other TV judges are mummies! 10 out of 10! Will also teach you how to talk back and argue your point at a business meeting, a small court case, a bout with your landlord or anywhere else, where viewpoints do not converge...
