Dune: Part Two (2024)
Dull and flat
I finished watching this movie and I didn't even know what was actually happening most of the time and then I started not even caring about what was happening. I like the Sci-fi genre but this movie was all over the place. It was a slow boring build up about this 'chosen one' being part of a prophecy leading some tribes into a big battle. However, despite the long drawn out build up, the battle itself was over quite quickly. I thought Dune part 1 was good and I was looking forward to part 2, but I was honestly disappointed and got bored quickly. Visually it looks great, no complaints there but the story was just a bit dull and flat in my opinion. I believe this is part of a trilogy and I'm genuinely not even bothered about watching the 3rd installment because I imagine it will be as long and boring as this one.
Brassic (2019)
First 4 seasons were amazing
As the title says I thought the first 4 seasons were amazing, so funny, good stories with good characters. I'm not sure what happened with season 5 but for me it just wasn't as good, it had its moments but I don't know if it was new writers or they just ran out of ideas because it just became a bit daft and dare I say dull? I definitely didn't laugh as much in season 5 as I had done with the previous seasons.
Two of the main characters were basically replaced for the season 5 and the ones they replaced them with didn't add anything. I don't know if something went on behind the scenes and the two characters who played Dylan and JJ wanted to leave after season 4. I just felt the chemistry went a bit flat with them not in it anymore and it was the chemistry that made the first 4 seasons so funny.
I'm not sure what the need was for the scenes with the Marionette puppets when Vince was talking to his counsellor in season 5 because it was all a bit weird in my opinion and again just another example of why season 5 was a bit strange.
I'm not sure if there will be a 6th season, the 5th season ended with a plot that indicates there should be another season, although I have heard work commitments etc. From the actors is proving to be an issue so it may not happen.
My personal opinion is Brassic is one of the best and funniest British TV shows for a long time, certainly seasons 1 to 4 anyway. If you haven't watched them I would definitely advise you to do so. I just think it might have run its course now so maybe it's best to call it a day.
Gale Stay Away from Oz (2023)
Just weird
I'm not entirely sure what this is meant to be? It's listed as a movie but it's under 30 minutes in duration. I watched it because I was intrigued. However, I have no idea what I just watched? It just seems to this girl with I assume some mental health problems who seems to be stuck in an endless loop of weird dreams relating to her possible grandmother who seems to be Dorothy from the wizard of Oz. She literally wakes from one dream/nightmare and seems to be in another. I didn't jump once even though the movie tries it's best to to make you jump and I have literally no idea what this movie/series is trying to do or where the plot is trying to take you? I'm not even sure there is a plot.
I've seen other reviews give this a decent rating although I generally have no idea why because its just weird.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Too rushed and nothing new
OK so let's get the obvious out of the way, this movie is so heavily influenced by Star Wars it could actually be another Star Wars movie. I read somewhere it was actually pitched to be a Star Wars movie but Lucasfilm said no chance, so they made it anyway!
The bad - The whole movie just feels so rushed, it's like they should have made it another hour long at least to try and develop the characters and their backgrounds. For some reason they just rushed in 100 miles an hour to the extent that you don't actually feel any connection to the characters and don't really care about them. At the time of writing I can't even remember the characters names off the top of my head and I only finished watching it about an hour ago. That just sums up how little effect the characters have.
The plot - I don't want to spoil the plot but it's nothing special, farmer's need help to fight against evil tyrants and a hero sets off to find someone to help them (sound familiar?). This plot has been done numerous times in various other movies like 7 Samurai, magnificent 7 etc. You get the idea.
For some reason the 'baddies' in this movie have been made to look identical to Russian soldiers, I kid you not. It makes you wonder if that was done on purpose with the whole Ukraine war in mind? You know make the evil ones resemble the Russians? All a bit weird in my opinion.
The good - The special effects are good, and to be honest that's all I can really praise about this movie.
The acting is not amazing although it's not too bad in parts, but I doubt anyone will be winning any oscars from this movie put it that way. Charlie Hunman's accent in this movie has to be heard to be believed, I'm not sure what the point of giving him an Irish accent was? Well I'm assuming he was meant to be Irish.
Overall verdict - I had high hopes for this movie and its all a bit, well meh! I Love Star Wars and the whole Sci Fi genre and this movie is just OK but nothing more. As mentioned it just feels too rushed and you don't feel any connection to the characters and the plot has been done a thousand times before, and mostly been done better elsewhere.
I will watch the next installment whenever it eventually comes out, but its certainly not one I will be counting down the days for.
A missed opportunity in my opinion.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Boring
My review is not based on the entire movie because I only managed to get through about 1 hour and 20 minutes before I finally lost the will to live. There is no way I could have put myself through another nearly 2 hours.
I can't believe this movie gets so many high ratings? Why? It really is the most boring drivel I've ever watched (well for what I managed to watch). I knew what it was about, I knew it had a very good cast but I was expecting a lot more from it. However, its just so slow and boring and I just completely lost interest.
I have no doubt it will probably win loads of awards/oscars etc. But all those awards are a farce as has been proven with various winners in recent years.
Luckily I managed to watch this movie from the comfort of my home and I can only feel sorry for the people who went to the cinema to watch this. I can imagine there a lot of people who must have fell asleep half way through it.
I'm just being honest and trying to save people from wasting their time. Don't trust those other reviews making out that this movie is a masterpiece because its one of the most boring movies I've ever seen.
Expend4bles (2023)
Just bad
I liked the Expendables 1 and 2 but 3 was a bit of a letdown in my opinion. This 4th installment is just bad, really bad and they need to stop now. The acting from Curtis Jackson aka 50 cent and Megan Fox is so bad it makes you wonder how they ever get any acting roles. Honestly the acting in this movie was so wooden I kept expecting Steven Seagal to turn, it really was that bad.
The story and action is over the top but all the Expendable movies are so it was to be expected. However, this movie goes so way over the job it actually ends up being farcical and embarrassing. The special effects are terrible and you can just tell most of it was shot inside a studio. Only Megan Fox could apparently be standing on a boat in the middle of the ocean and not a hair on her face was moving and her makeup always remained perfect. I have absolute no idea why someone decided to cast her in this movie, apart from the obvious that she is a bit of eye candy.
This surely has to be the end of this franchise although knowing Sylvester Stallone is involved we know he loves to squeeze the most out of his movie franchises as much he can. Rocky and Rambo spring to mind as two movie franchises that went on way too long and spoilt the legacy. The Expendables should have ended after the 3rd movie and even that was one too many.
Its worth a watch just to see how bad the acting is but this is not a movie that will live long in the memory.
Debris (2021)
A good watch
I only recently discovered this show existed and I then watched the whole season through over the next couple of weeks. I really enjoyed it, I thought the story was good and the special effects were as good as any TV show or movie and it was very well made. It had a bit of an X files vibe to it.
I have read a few reviews saying the characters lacked charisma etc. But I honestly thought the characters were all fine and played well by the actors. I gave it a 8 out of 10 because some of the jargon quoted in the show meant you need some type of a masters degree in a scientific subject to understand what they were going on about. However it was still fine to follow the story.
I was looking forward to season 2 to see how the story progressed and to my dismay I found out the show was cancelled after the one season! This is a shame because there are far worse shows out there that have had multiple seasons and I thought this show was decent enough for at least another few seasons. I do believe it could have become even better if it was allowed to continue and its such a shame there will be no more.
I have read reviews saying this show was similar to Fringe although not as good. I haven't watched Fringe myself so I can't compare the two. However, I will now watch Fringe because it sounds like something I will enjoy and it will help to soften my disappointment of no more Debri episodes.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
I enjoyed it, love it for what it is.
Whether you think the franchise should have been left alone will always be open for debate. However, I've loved all the Indiana Jones movies including the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull so this was a no brainer for me. I don't know why some people are hating on this movie, I mean what exactly where they expecting?
Harrison Ford back as Indiana Jones? Tick,
A far fetched adventure story? Tick,
Over the top car/vehicle chases and plenty of near miss escapes? Tick.
The standard battle of good v bad/evil?
This is what the Indiana Jones franchise is all about, its entertaining and enjoyable. I think its fair to say this is definitely the last time we see Harrison Ford play the iconic Indiana Jones so just watch it and enjoy the ride for one last time.
Jingle All the Way (1996)
Great family movie
I'm not sure why this movie has so many negative reviews, in my opinion it's a good family movie that has some very funny parts and a decent story, we have all been there last minute trying to find that popular toy around Christmas that seems to be sold out everywhere (well I have anyway) so I can relate to the chaos that ensues trying to find it. I like Arnie as an actor and I think he pulls of the comedy type roles as well as his tough action type roles. This is another of the movies I add to my list of Christmas movies to watch each year and I still enjoy watching it. If you watch it for what it is and don't expect any Oscar type performances you will enjoy it. It's silly, it's fun and a good Christmas movie.
Luck (2022)
Kids will love it
My 8 year old daughter sat and watched the whole movie without moving and that in itself is a miracle! Great movie with some funny laugh out loud moments, a good story with likeable characters and good voice overs by some noteable celebrities. It was on a bit longer than I expected but as mentioned it managed to keep my daughter's attention for the whole duration and that is always a good sign that a movie is enjoyable. It had a bit of the movie 'Elf' elements to it and I can see this definitely had a bit of influence on the writers. I would say this movie is aimed more at older kids from 7 or 8 upwards rather than younger kids like 4 or 5 etc. Just because the plot and storyline may be too difficult for younger kids to follow but there are plenty of nice colours and funny characters to keep them entertained. Overall a very enjoyable, funny movie that both kids and adults will enjoy together.
Any Given Sunday (1999)
Boring and lifeless
This movie has been on my to watch list for some time and I finally got around to watching it recently (mainly because I forgot it existed).
A story about American Football, an A list cast, a great director so everything was in place for a gripping movie, however this could possibly be the most boring sports movie I've ever seen.
The movie throws you straight into a match, Dennis Quaid the aging quarterback is injured, his replacement goes into play only for him to get injured straightaway so its left to the 3rd choice rookie Jamie Foxx to take over and this is what the story is about.
The problem with this movie is you just don't care about the characters, Al Pacino as a coach is not believable and his 'motivational speeches' to the players lack any credibility, James Woods as a chief physio/doctor is not believable and vastly underused in this movie, Aaron Eckhart as some type of co ordination specialist brought in to assist the coach offers nothing to this movie and Cameron Diaz as the owner who inherited the team from her late Dad tries to be ruthless but it just doesn't work, what an absolute waste of a great cast.
There is no tension in the movie, the footage of the games is boring and it just goes nowhere. They try the usual a few seconds remaining to get the winning points scenarios, but it falls flat and you find yourself not even caring.
Jamie Foxx plays a decent enough role as the young cocky quarterback who wants to do things his own way and is more interested in money and fame than being a team player but the story is boring, the movie is boring and for such a great cast it is criminal that this movie ended up like it did.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Finally an end to the worst trilogy.
I haven't enjoyed any of the last trilogy, an insult to the original saga. Weak characters, weak plots and bad acting, this had it all. I only watched the movies through my love of Star Wars but boy am I glad this trilogy has finished. I'm not going to even bore you with the plot or story because basically there isn't one! I've given it 2 stars only because it was good to see some familiar faces and locations from the original trilogy, but that's it.
Just stop now please Disney, stick to Mickey mouse and Co or Pixar movies because you've done too much damage to a once great franchise.
The Irishman (2019)
Good but too long.
It is a good story with an excellent cast, however it is on far too long, 3 and a half hours was just too much in my opinion.
The movie itself is very slow paced, however it tells the story well and it does add credibility to what possibly happened to Jimmy Hoffa. There is not much action considering the length of the movie but the story does keep you engrossed.
We all know the legends of De Niro, Pesci and Pacino and they all put in another excellent performance, I don't think you will ever see these 3 icons in the same movie again, so cherish it.
I enjoyed the movie and I'm just glad I got to watch it from the comfort of my home, the length will put a lot of people off but it's a well made movie with a good story and as mentioned an excellent cast, although I don't think I could watch it all again like a Goodfellas, once is enough.
The Great Wall (2016)
Good action
I had never heard of this movie and I stumbled across it by chance and I'm glad I did. It's a well made movie, great actors with good acting, great special effects and a decent story. There are a lot of extras in this movie so you can see its had a big budget.
A good action/monster movie and it will keep you entertained, well worth a watch.
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Doesn't feel like a Rambo movie
I have enjoyed all the previous Rambo movies, yes even Rambo 3, however this movie just didn't feel like a Rambo movie to me, it could have just been a Liam Neeson Taken movie with Sly Stallone in the lead role.
The movie felt rushed and I'm wondering if that was down to bad editing rather than the director. The plot has been done before hence my Taken reference and it offered nothing to the Rambo franchise, clearly this movie was made just to cash in on the name.
There is plenty of action and blood and guts as you would expect but overall I was left disappointed with the movie as a whole. There is a journalist character who briefly helps Rambo, however there was actually no point in having the character in the movie and the character could easily have been omitted without making any difference to the movie whatsoever.
Some things are best left alone and this movie fits into that category.
Joker (2019)
Amazing
One of the best movies I've ever watched and that's no exaggeration, Joaquin Phoenix is an incredible actor and if he doesn't win an Oscar for this movie then something is seriously wrong.
Everyone who knows about Batman, knows about the Joker and this movie does an excellent job of telling the story of how the Joker came to be with the links to the Wayne industry neatly done, the story is gripping, dark and tackles the issue of mental health head on.
I didn't think I would see the Joker portrayed on screen any better than what Heath Ledger did, however Joaquin Phoenix managed to do that and more.
This really is a must see movie.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
Decent but a step too far.
First off there are a lot of reviews giving scores of 1 and 2 out of 10 which I feel are harsh. I completely agree that this movie didn't really need to be made and its obvious it's been done to carry on cashing in on the Toy Story brand, however it still is a decent watch.
The animation is incredible and the way Pixar make these types of movies just seem to get better and better. Its probably the best animation I've seen in a movie
It's a pity that the majority of the main characters don't get much of a look in in this movie moving more towards the addition of new characters which I refer back to my cashing in comment, new characters means more merchandise, even Buzz lightyear has been reduced to a bit part character in this movie.
If you hadn't seen any of the other Toy Story movies then this movie would easily score 8 or 9 out of 10, however the fact it really didn't need to be made and doesn't really add anything to the 3 previous movies or make use of the original main characters only gives this an average score.
Whilst its good to see Woody, Buzz and the gang again, I agree with other comments saying the Toy Story franchise should have ended at Toy Story 3.
The Banana Splits Movie (2019)
Terrible
I wanted to like this movie because I used to love the Banana Splits as a kid. I understood the genre of the movie was to be a bit dark because it's a horror movie but my god this movie is terrible. The acting is horrendous and it makes you wonder if these people actually auditioned for the parts or if they were just given to the first people the producer seen.
I stuck with it for the hour and a half duration, why I don't know because this could easily be the worst movie I've ever seen.
They would have been better making a movie about how the Banana splits began, a bit like a biography but instead they tried to make a horror movie and it failed miserably.
I've given it a generous 2 star rating and that's being kind and it's only because the Banana split characters look exactly how I remembered them and the theme song was in there.
Do not waste your time on this movie.
UglyDolls (2019)
Good for what it is.
First off this movie is for kids, so people going on about plots, character development etc. are way off the mark, my 5 year old daughter loves it and is not interested one bit in any plot.
Its colourful, has good characters, funny moments and catchy songs. It won't go down as a classic in the world of animated movies, however for the target audience it does the job and keeps the little ones entertained and that's all that matters.
