The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself (2022)
Season 2 ASAP please!!!
OMFG can't rave about this enough. Can't believe I missed this in Netflix up till now. It's been around for ages. What a show! Fresh, funny, heartbreaking, heartwarming and riveting from the start. I had to binge it in 2 days. The characters are brilliant, brilliantly, fresh soundtrack and script. The baddies are sooooo bad and the goodies are not always good. I watch a lot of witchy supernatural stuff and you get a lot of played out stropes. This story is original and exciting. Really hope they get a second season. I might just start it from the start again straight away lol its one of those kind of shows!
Hex (2004)
The UK Buffy it is NOT...
Possibly one of the most ridiculous, poorly written, badly scripted things I've ever seen. I only watched because a streaming platform cited it as "the UK's answer Buffy" or something. It's like a cheaper, much much seedier (teachers particularly :vomit emoji:) less well conceived version of something vaguely reminiscent of Buffy. One thing that really annoyed me was the way they portray ghosts. Now not giving any spoilers here but any of us who watch this genre know there are rules and certain traits to certain supernatural entities. I don't mind a show changing things, but make it all make sense within your own universe at least! In this ghost can open doors, use a frickin vending machine, wield weapons, change their flippin outfit, scoff bags of crisps ffs... However the ghost cannot touch a human and nobody sees the crisps or doors or anything the ghosts is levitating through the air! People talking to ghosts in front of others who can't see them... No one says a thing about it. I know this is before earpods so they couldn't do that trick but come on. Hilarious thing is, all this said... I still binged the 2 seasons over a week or 2. Meaning it's somewhat entertaining and I must really be getting to the bottom of the barrel for these shows now. Lol.
Wayne (2019)
Dark, funny and very violent
Great soundtrack, very funny of you don't mind a lot of gore and violence. I would really love to see another season of this. I want to know what happens to Wayne and Del. Please Wayne creators....give us more!
The New Mutants (2020)
Not as bad as they say but still no amazin
I thought it was terrible at the start and to be honest, being Scottish myself Maisie Williams' Scottish accent was all that kept me in it. I mean that alone has to be recognised as one of the most convincing Scottish accents of all time. I was stunned. I'm so sick of these too thick or too many rolling R's or just totally the wrong cadence cringe worthy attempts.. This was like an Edinburgh girl I'd known for years. Outstanding, what an actress. Anyway enough about that. The film itself only got his when in the last quarter. All that amazing stuff from Magik left till the end...shocking. Anyway it's a 6 from me.
Flowers (2016)
Moving, funny and original.
Loved everything about this little gem. Wish I'd discovered it sooner and that there were more episodes. Great acting, sharp, funny with somehow surreal but also heartbreakingly real writing. Just binged both seasons and feel like putting episode one on again. I don't want to leave the Flowers's world 😂
War Story (2014)
Bleak but compelling, believable and well acted.
I think this film deserves more than the stars it has accrued. I believe this score is just due to lack of reviews (by anyone with a brain...ha ha) . It's VERY Bleak but compelling, believable and well acted. This film is looks beautiful and the musical score is gorgeous. Catherine Keener is brilliantly cast in the role of this wasted woman who still has the tenacity to try. Light Saturday night movie with popcorn this is not. From the title you might think there will be conflict and violence but you'll be disappointed if that's what you are looking for. This film is dramatic and poignant and very thought provoking. The themes of post traumatic stress, depression and friendship were very well portrayed for me.
