Dolemite Is My Name (2019)
What film making is all about
This film is really just a feel good story and I loved it. It was simple in its storytelling which mad it have a certain charm to it. The movie is predictable at every turn, the acting is average (except for Murphy who's trying his heart out), the direction and production design wasn't impressive really, it just got the job done. The real reason to watch this film is its overall message, to all beginning filmmakers and even people who just want to believe in themselves, that if you work your ass off you will accomplish what you have in mind. The film didn't do it in a cheesy way either. To put the cherry on top Eddie Murphy's performance was awesome and even though its not the best I've seen this year, it was probably the most entertaining movie.
Watch this movie to learn about someone called Dolemite.
Gravity (2013)
Great direction and cinematography but a bad script
Long story short my title says it all. Alfonso Cuaron has masterful direction with long takes and excellent movement, followed up by beautiful cinematography but it's sadly wasted on a dumb script. The characters are thin, dialogue is cheeky and wooden, and the events that occur just have you asking questions. It's not the events that occur to move the plot forward but it's like the Cuaron brothers decided to shove dumb action scenes in this movie to build tension, when this could've been put towards the characters. Also the music is the most generic score I've heard in a big budget movie like this, it sounds like they bought it off a stock music website.
Overall this movie isn't really worth the watch other than how they filmed it, putting the camera in creative spots.
The Irishman (2019)
Another Scorsese Classic
This movie is excellent in every way, I was afraid of it being a lot like Goodfellas but it wasn't at all thankfully. I don't want to spoil the film so I'll keep it brief. All the technical aspects to a film are there; acting, direction, music, writing etc. but what really surprised me was how invested this movie kept me in it's characters. Most of the film is these guys talking and you really get to know these characters, which really invests you in the story. It was also very interesting to learn about Jimmy Hoffa and how important he was, since I knew nothing about him before hand.
This film is brilliant and trying to find flaws in it is like a needle in a haystack, one of Scorsese's best.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Definitely an Action Film
Another brilliant film shot by Chad Stahelski. Of course the characters have little to no depth and the action that occurs is over the to but what separates this action film from the other generic ones is that the director behind the camera knows how to shoot action. That and all the actors in the film can fight some what, so that leaves a lot of room for wide shots, which opens up to long takes of brilliant action scenes.
This film isn't unique but it's well shot and definitely an entertaining watch.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Iconic
This movie is going to be a staple in the psychological horror genre. This is another one of those movies where it's extremely hard to find something wrong with the movie. All the technical aspects are spot on, the acting is brilliant, both Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe embodied their characters. The tight 1:19:1 aspect ratio is very well used for most of the scenes with the characters are close ups and when Robert Eggers does use wide shots, the cinematography is breath taking. The script really elevates this movie through the roof, making it unpredictable and hard to take your eyes off of.
SPOILERS
The only thing I can think of that was flawed in the film was when Dafoe's character attacks Pattinson and has a clear chance to kill him but misses. Yet we don't know if this is actually happening because Pattinson's mental state throughout the entire movie is deteriorating.
This movie was brilliant and at the time of this review I think its going to be the best movie of 2019.
The Godfather (1972)
This Movie Is Simply Perfect
Everything from the acting, directing, and writing of this movie is perfect. There isn't a single bad line of dialogue. There isn't a single poor shot in the movie. I could go on and on about it but this movie really is perfect. The story is classic and simple, leaving it easy and fun to follow. Every scene moves the plot forward to the next scene. There are so many great moments in the movie that're still studied by young filmmakers today. The only weak point of the movie is the character arc of Michael Corleone, while he is a well written character I feel like it's nothing we haven't seen before in a film. Overall there isn't a single thing wrong with the film and it's one of the best movies ever made.
