Coco (I) (2017)

Hits all the right spots
18 March 2024
It took me 7 years to get around to watching this movie and I'm so glad I did. I was a teen who thought "all these new Disney movies are terrible" - this was around when Cars 3 and Finding Dory came out (yawn).

Coco is in my book a perfect Disney movie - one that is both enjoyable and has nice comedic jabs for kids, as well as a good message that its older audience can relate to or empathize with.

Really needed a movie that could warm me up after watching Requiem for a Dream. I read a quote yesterday that said "a film should be like a rock in the shoe", and I guess time will tell if I continue to think about this one.

Deeply Disturbing
1 March 2024
This is probably the most disturbing thing I've ever watched.

I felt sick to my stomach watching this film and honestly I think I wish I hadn't watched it. If your goal is to shock yourself into quitting drug abuse, maybe this is a good movie for you. I feel like I need to see a therapist or something after watching this. It really dives into what it looks like to break down a human until they are nothing but a shell.

All this being said, it is a movie that made me feel such strong emotions and for that reason I give it a high rating. I can't imagine what the actors had to go through during the filming of this.

If you are looking for a very dark, unsettling movie this is it.

If not, go out with some friends or family and appreciate your life.

Morbius (2022)

Lost the plot
26 July 2022
I watched Morbius to humor my inner desire to see a movie that was so badly thrashed by social media. To be honest, the movie wasn't really that bad but it just didn't make sense and left more to be desired for in terms of complexity.

This feels almost like an unfinished movie or like a script that was based on several different iterations of editing, there were so many details that left me confused and not understanding how/why things were taking place. The plot is more like something that you would see in a VERY early super hero movie where things don't need to make sense, they just need to be surmounting the viewers expectations. I found myself laughing at how absurd parts of the plot were when I was explaining the movie to those who had not seen it.

Save yourself the time and don't watch this movie.

The Pianist (2002)

Amazing Masterpiece
17 July 2022
An amazing movie. Matches well with the book and added much to it, in my opinion. Adrien Brody did an amazing job and although the piano scenes aren't that plentiful, they look good (sometimes piano scenes in movies can look absolutely horrendous for those that can tell the actors haven't got a clue on what they're doing). I didn't feel that elements were too far in either extreme and that the movie was very well balanced. Amazing film and absolutely recommend.

Went as a joke, stayed for the story.
17 July 2022
Went with my friends as a joke but I actually thoroughly enjoyed this. I have seen Despicable Me 1 & 2 and enjoyed both a lot. This movie did a good job of answering a bit of backstory that may seem confusing in Despicable Me 1 which I enjoyed a lot.

Overall a very enjoyable movie for me.

Amazing dystopian movie
2 May 2022
One of the best dystopian films that doesn't go too far into the future which is a twist most dystopian films don't necessarily do. Plot was very strong, cinematography was great, characters were great, casting was great. I can't give this a 10 because it's just a hair too cheesy at some parts.

I hate to it but Elgort is dragging it down.
22 April 2022
I love almost everything about this. The cinematography is amazing, the storyline is class, Watanabe is great as the disgruntled detective, but Ansel Elgort is just not the right guy for me. There are stretches where I'll forget about Elgort and the scenes flow seamlessly, but then I'll be jarred by the way he delivers a line, or by the way he's holding his backpack (not his fault but I really despised this costume choice), or the clumsiness he seems to always have. Yes I understand he's the white guy that's different and trying to make his mark in a place that he wants to be a part of, but he just can't sell it completely for me.

As a kid when I saw this, I absolutely adored it. As a (young) adult now, I still absolutely love it. To be honest, the plot is kind of weak, but the jokes are all great. It's an action movie, don't expect some big takeaway at the end, just something to have fun with.

Generation defining.
15 November 2021
The 20th Century had Casablanca, Star Wars, the Godfather, Blade Runner, and others - this is the first of the 21st Century masterpieces. Truly in awe at how amazing this movie is, an astounding show of all aspects of films. Amazing story and cinematography accompanied with actors worthy of telling the tale. Remarkable and breathtaking.

Pretty good
14 November 2021
Pretty great movie, only problem is it could be accused of having a white savior character but I don't really feel it. When I watched this movie, I felt that it deserved much more nominations, and deserved better from US critics. Great movie, feel good, good message, good emotions, great.

Not deserving of one star
14 November 2021
Although I'm not one to stand for Christian and religious movies, this movie doesn't do a bad job of trying to be a little edgy. The last line is a classic, that line alone deserves like a million stars but the rest isn't great.

Typical

Very bland movie. Only a few parts really stuck out to me as showing deep and valuable character development, felt like because of how many characters there were, the surface could only be really scratched on a few of the student characters.

Catcher in the Rye Vibes
13 September 2021
Extremely difficult to find anything particularly wrong with this movie but I still am unable to give it a full 10/10. All acting was tremendously amazing - especially moments between the parents and children, I could feel goose bumps, like it was the foreboding presence of a parent scolding me. Even the story felt extremely realistic and flowed well, the only complaint is that the climax of the film was difficult to spot, it felt like that there was no high point of the movie.

Overall, a great watch, time well spent.

A Staple of World War 2 Movies
3 February 2020
This film was one of many World War II movies that I recall watching in my childhood in the early 2000s (with names like Kelly's Heroes, Where Eagles Dare, Bridge Over the River Kwai, and the Great Escape).

While this film does not necessarily match the prior-mentioned films in terms of quality, it still definitely holds its own among stiff competition.

Although my exact memory of this film is a little foggy, one scene that that still sticks with me is when a code word is created among the American soldiers:

In this scene, (similar to the call "Thunder" and reply of "Flash" in Saving Private Ryan) the call "Apple" is used to which the response is "Cobbler". When an unsuspecting German soldier creeps to their pit, the call "Apple" is given. The response heard is "Pie" not "Cobbler" leading to the Americans opening up into the darkness, and subsequently inspecting the German soldier.

Overall, the reason for this movie's score is a great story and plot, the unfortunate reason for its loss is due to the poor aging of this film (I mean, come on, the Guns of Navarone came out a year before this and seemed years ahead in terms of quality).
