They/Them (2022)
waisted potential.
This movie had SO much potential... in the first 10-15 minutes the movie seems very promising. It has some decent characters (yes there were a lot of stereotypes but as a part of the lgbtq i'm willing to overlook stereotypes if they're in good faith), and the premise was a nice twist on a classic slasher.
However, that's where it started going downhill. My biggest problem with this "slasher" movie is that there was no... slashing? Like seriously of the very little gore this movie even has, 95% of it happens of camera. I wanted more suspense, more drama, more murder, and honestly just more horror in general. There was genuinely nothing scary.
It felt like we were in the first act for 3/4 of the movie - as if most of the movie was exposition. At the end we then jump straight into the third act. The pacing felt very odd and we don't get any sort of action until the last 20 minutes of the movie.
I love a good horror movie, i love a good queer movie, however this sadly was neither.
Not Okay (2022)
The plot is questionable, but is extremely entertaining and well-made
Here's the thing... lots of people in the reviews are bashing the main character - how she handles the apology, blames others, how she doesn't get a redemption, etc.
However, I think this movie was supposed to be about Rowan. Rowan has true depth. After all she goes through, she ends the movie with an empowering speech about the terrible things and people in the world (Danni being one of them). The reason Danni was the "main character" was simply that most of the action centered around her - despite of the fact she's flawed.
I honestly don't think it matters that Danni didn't get redemption cus we weren't supposed to like her in the first place (if that wasn't clear, they actually give you a satirical "content warning" about how the main character isn't likable). Us as viewers at times may be secretly rooting for Danni and feeling dread that she'll be found out. The purpose of this is to point out that our judgement can often be skewed by perspective and sheds light to the fact we often root for awful characters in other films that aren't satirical.
Also, at the end of the day this movie was extremely entertaining. I think if a movie is able to let you escape for a moment in time and never be bored one second it's achieved its job. You can discern for yourself whether you agree with the message, the narrative, the characters, etc. But you'll only care enough about all of those things if it holds your attention.
On top of that, I think the acting was incredible, the style, the filmmaking, the concept, they were all great. Often times people forget a movie is more than it's plot. The plot of a movie is all anyone cares to talk about in reviews... but film wouldn't be film without all the other magical things involved we've become used to.
Dramarama (2020)
Very good but could've been better
Don't get me wrong, this movie is incredible. The acting, the directing, the characters, etc. It was very easy to watch and had very realistic dialogue.
The main thing I wish this movie would've done is give the central character more resolution.
Gene is one of the most relatable characters I've ever seen in a movie. He's closeted in a homophobic community of theatre people, and he's doubting his religion when everyone around him is expecting him to conform to their own religious beliefs. The scene where he's changing in the same room as Oscar was also painfully accurate.
The whole movie seems building up to one moment. I guessed that moment would either be Gene coming out, or Oscar kissing Gene with a surprise "Oscar is actually Gay too" twist. However, we get neither.
He never actually comes out to his friends, leaving the story unresolved and somewhat depressing. Yes, a couple of the characters suspect it by the end, and one friend even suggests she would accept him. We just never get the coming out scene the audience was waiting for.
I was interested to see each character's reaction and how each character would consolidate their own religious beliefs with their love and friendship for Gene.
I was also convinced for half of the movie that Oscar was maybe also in the closet. That we'd get to see him and Gene express their feelings for each other in some way... but again, this was left unresolved. There's a line at the end that suggests maybe Gene's into Sammy, (another guy we never see on camera) but I question why we never meet him if he's so important to Gene.
So like I said, it's overall an amazing film and you should definitely watch it. Especially if you've ever experienced the pain of being in the closet. I was merely disappointed we never got the payoff the whole movie was seemingly building up to.
Hereditary (2018)
Acting amazing, cinematography stunning, plot terrible.
The acting on this movie was superb. Specifically Toni Collette. She has at least 2 full monologues in this movie and THAT WOMAN CAN ACT.
The cinematography was also incredible. It was constantly interesting, beautiful, and creative.
The acting and cinematography were so good in fact... it distracted from the fact that the plot is awful. While the premise is decent, the execution didn't make any sense. Just when you thought the story was barely salvageable, in the last 20 minutes the plot completely changes and turns into some weird thing about the son being in line to run a cult. There are also multiple completely unnecessary "jump scares" in which it shows elderly people completely naked. The ending of this movie made no sense and will leave you absolutely unsatisfied.
Also... this movie isn't scary at all. Don't watch if you're trying to be scared.
Judas and the Black Messiah (2021)
Really Boring
This is honestly one of the most boring movies I've ever seen...
It has a great premise, and I really wanted to like it... but if a movie fails to do it's main purpose (entertain), then it's not worth watching.
Cats (2019)
Not as bad as everyone says
This movie isn't good or bad... it's pretty mixed.
Negatives include the VERY strange CGI (obviously), and a few singing issues (a lot of cast members aren't that good at singing, which is a huge negative for a theatre kid). Judi Dench completely butchers the final number. The last song is supposed to be a belted operatic performance, but instead she "speak songs" the entire thing.
However, for positives we have the fact that the music itself is incredible. As an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, it's sure to be good; there's a reason why the stage version is so popular. The second plus is ALW wrote a new song for this movie called "Beautiful Ghosts", and it's BEAUTIFUL... ALW definitely still has his amazing composing skills. And last, and definitely the biggest positive, is Jennifer Hudson. She SHINES and CARRIES this movie. Every time she sings, she steals the show. This movie is worth watching just for her performance.
Heathers (1988)
The musical is better
I'm a HUGE fan of the musical theatre version of Heathers... so I was expecting a lot from this movie. Unfortunately, the musical is MUCH better than this film, so I was a bit disappointed. However, if you like this movie I'd highly recommend listening to the musical!
Crawl (2019)
Good, But Predictable
This movie was definitely entertaining... but was extremely predictable. It had so many cliches... at the beginning of the film, she's 6 feet away from the exit of the basement (if she got to the exit, the rest of the movie wouldn't happen), and an alligator just HAPPENS to jump out at the exact right moment. But because of the music and camera angles, you total saw it coming. Both her and her dad get completely mangled, getting multiple limbs bitten and occasionally loosing them, but never become unconscious or die? This happens in every shark movie... all of the supporting characters die with one bite yet the main characters are able to endure countless. Also how on earth did the dad become unconscious from a scratch in his shoulder at the beginning, yet stayed conscious when his literal arm was bitten off?? The movie shows multiple supporting background people which you know right off the bat are only shown to be killed off. On top of all of that, apparently the main character can swim faster than the gators? And also all of the alligators are unrealistically big. In real life, most of them would MAYBE be 6 feet long... but they're like 15 feet long in this movie. These alligators are also way more smart/predatorial than in real life... they wouldn't be SEARCHING for humans after already eating like 5. It's the same as in shark movies... the sharks are always unrealistically trying to kill everyone... when in real life, sharks almost always kill humans on accident. Even though though this movie has so many cliches, it was still pretty tense and very entertaining!
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Possibly the worst movie I've ever seen
So... the entire point of Zombie movies is that they're supposed to be "scary", but this movie attempts to be a "comedy" so all elements of fear are removed. That could be okay, if the comedy was funny. There was not a single thing in this movie that was funny at all. So because it's not scary, it's not funny, and the "romance" in this movie is pathetic, it's simply an awful boring neutral. On top of that the acting is terrible, the plot is terrible, and the filmmakers threw in one or two moments of unnecessary intense gore as if they knew their movie was terrible and wanted to add something to keep it "interesting". Please don't watch this movie. I rate hundreds of movies on IMDB and this is seriously one of only two movies I've EVER rated a 1.
The Ring (2002)
Not that scary
I honestly don't understand why everyone says this is "one of the scariest movies ever"... it was really slow, had maybe one good jump scare, and was overall quite boring. The concept for this film had lots of potential for many scary scenes, but didn't use its potential at all.
Pet Sematary (2019)
Not that good but I wasn't surprised
This movie really wasn't that good... but if I'm being honest, basically every horror movie these days isn't good so I wasn't expecting much :(
Cruella (2021)
Greatly Exceeded Expectations
When I went to see this movie, I wasn't expecting much... but MY GOODNESS it was INCREDIBLE. The plot, the fashion & costumes, the dialogue, and not to mention the astounding leads. The two Emmas perfectly play off of one another, and Stone was born for this role. I was expecting a kids movie but what I got was a dark, captivating, and very entertaining journey.
