Maestro (2023)
Oscars nominating anything for best picture
Maestro. Follows the story of Leonard Bernstein who suddenly becomes a recognized orchestra director because the main director miss the concert, so far so good; my problem with this film began because the story is not interesting, I mean, one of the "problems" that Leonard goes through is because he is gay. And that's it.
I wanted to watch this film because, like I said in the title of this review, its nominated for best picture, but, is it really worth watching? My answer would be no, I mean, you could watch it, but you're not missing something. At some point, I started to believe that Bradley Cooper saw Tár (2022) and the next morning started to write the script for this film.
The only thing where the film saves itself is the acting, Bradley Cooper did a great job playing Leonard, but the rest of the film, in my opinion, it's a solid 6/10.
Love & Death (2023)
An "ok" show saved by its last three episodes.
I started watching this show simply because of Elizabeth Olsen without knowing anything about the story of Candy Montgomery, but as the series progressed, this story interested me more and more.
I'm not going to lie, the first episodes seemed too long and not that interesting, hence the title of this review. I think it's just to cover every detail, but basically the first four episodes boil down to: 1. Candy and Allan have an affair, 2. They both go to the same church, 3. Candy's husband is a fool, and 4. Allan's wife is crazy. Then, the last three episodes arrive to save the show. Personally, ep 5 was my favorite and I think that in this one you can appreciate Elizabeth Olsen's performance more for which she should have been nominated for an Emmy (without forgetting the great work of Jesse Plemons for which he is deservedly nominated).
I think the last episodes are the best because of all the drama and atmosphere that occurs during the trial; for a moment I felt like I was watching an episode of Better Call Saul, The way the Love & Death writers made a legal drama for this final stretch of the show was great.
My conclusion: a good series that is worth watching at least once to appreciate the work that the people involved in the show did, and also to know the real-life story on which it is based.
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
I'm sorry...
My problem with this film is that it's 2 hr and 10 min length; I mean, I have no problem with other films that are this long, in fact, some of my favorite films are about 3 hr length, I just think this could have been resolved in a lot less time.
My problem it's not for the film being of the 1940's; I completely understand how movies were made back then, so this is not a complaint about the acting or the effects at all, in fact, I think these two were done excellently.
I just think the development of George's life could have been a little shorter, I mean, we know he's a good man and helps people, but what's the need to drag this out too much?
I believe this is simply so that the ending has a greater impact, but unfortunately for me it has more weight that I liked the entire story than that I liked only the ending.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
From someone who's watching GOT for the first time in 2023
Disappointing. I think that's the only word to describe this finale, Kit Harington was right when he say that this was the word for sum up the series finale.
I literally ended the show like a month ago, but I was so annoyed that didn't even want to make a review lol.
I have to admit that I liked the beginning of this season, I was just like "what are people complaining about?" and then, Arya killing the Night King happen; but it's funny because I liked more The Long Night than the previous episode, the one where Brienne becomes knight it's just so cringe to me.
I can't say anything more that hasn't already been said. Making Bran the king it's just SO DUMB, that and the waste of Jon's history being a Targaryen are the things that annoyed me the most, besides, end up taking him to the place where he started?? Wow.
I can't believe that Lyanna Mortmont had a more memorable death than Jaime and Cersei, and I can't believe that D&D ruined what it could have been the greatest show of all time, it's just sad.
The Last of Us (2023)
After watching all the episodes:
Beautiful series.
The best adaptation of a videogame that could have been made for television.
Probably the only show I'll ever watch in my life where I've given every episode a 10/10 rating.
I must admit that at the time the cast for this series was announced I had my doubts. Until before this series I had not seen the work of any of the actors, but now it is more than clear to me. Pedro Pascal IS Joel and Bella Ramsey definitely IS Ellie.
The directors couldn't have chosen someone else who would have done a better job than these two.
Beyond the cast and the performances of this series, another thing that I really liked were the settings which gave an exact appearance of a post apocalyptic world. Also, another thing that this series did very well was making you to love a character who will die in the same episode.
Everything I said in this review was about the first season, of course; however, I have no doubt that for the second season it will still be the same piece of art that it was this first season.
Quite a ride!
The Last of Us: Look for the Light (2023)
Look for the Light.
New episode of The Last of Us! And also the last one of the first season.
Where to start?? Boy I feel like this episode is what any Last of Us fan could ask for.
One of the best episodes of a television show to come out in recent times, and a great way to close the first season of this great series.
The episode starts with a prologue, which had stopped happening since episode 02 so it was a nice touch that they added one again for the final episode.
Prologue in which we finally meet Anna, Ellie's mother, and in which apart from seeing how our protagonist is born, we see Anna interact with Marlene in a fairly short but emotional scene.
After this, we continue with our journey with Ellie somewhat traumatized by what happened with David in the last episode, and by everything that has happened on this long journey which is already coming to an end.
I loved. It is the only sentence I have at this moment to talk about the episode without getting too excited.
I honestly think that this is the episode to silence all those who were complaining that the series was nothing like the video game, boom! An episode that shows you exactly the last sequences of the original story.
I'm going to miss The Last of Us a lot and do a review every Sunday for a long time, but hey, see you in season two!
Oh, and, "Ok."
The Last of Us: When We Are in Need (2023)
It's okay, baby girl...
New episode of The Last of us!
Wow!! I'm still on edge after watching the episode.
The episode starts showing us a new character named David who is the leader of a group of survivors.
On the other hand, we see Ellie in her fight to keep Joel alive and because of this she goes hunting a deer, and because of this she ends up finding David and her partner.
From here is where the action begins.
I really liked the way they adapted David's story in this episode, unlike the game, here everything happens a little faster, however, everything happens in the right way for fill the story in just 50 minutes.
As the episodes progress, adjectives run out to describe Bella Ramsey's performance.
Man, the whole episode is pretty cool, but the ending...
A scene exactly taken from the video game in which you feel Ellie's fear and adrenaline for everything that is happening with David, until finally Ellie explodes showing us one of the most violent and bloody scenes of the entire series.
With this it is clear to me that there is definitely no bad episode in the series, and that the cast for this one was more than perfect. Bella Ramsey is definitely Ellie, and also a shout-out to Troy Baker for his terrific performance in this episode (it was pretty funny hearing Joel's voice in someone who isn't Joel this time lol).
I don't know what else I can add. 10/10 for the penultimate episode of this season and to wait for the season finale, which I know will also be magnificent.
The Last of Us: Left Behind (2023)
Don't go...
New episode of The Last of Us, a very special one.
We have the story about how Ellie get infected and and what she was doing before met Joel.
Left behind's story introduces us to a new character named Riley, who is Ellie's best friend and first love interest. Riley asks Ellie to sneak with her to a mall where they don't know it, but her life is about to change.
I really liked this episode and the way they adapted the DLC from the first game into a television episode.
It's really wonderful that between small talks Ellie and Riley transmit so many emotions, you can really appreciate the great relationship between the two of them and how Ellie sees that Riley is betraying her in some way. And this is due to the great job done on this episode by bella ramsey and storm reid, both of whom are phenomenal and make this look like a carbon copy of the original left behind.
Joel is not seen much in this episode, but in the little that he appears we can appreciate how Ellie really sees him as another loved one and does not want to leave him to her fate, but wants to take care of him now.
Very good episode, which serves to understand a little about ellie's past before continuing with the main story.
Maybe this one will have another review bombed like episode 3, but it doesn't matter, the true fans of the game know that it is how it is. And it's perfect the way it is.
The Last of Us: Kin (2023)
Just like in the game.
New episode of The Last of Us!!
Oh man, where to start? From the beginning.
Starts with a little reminder of what happened in the ending of the last episode, just because. Then we jumped three months and have Ellie and Joel on their trip to find Tommy.
The title of my review comes from exactly what I was thinking the whole time as the episode progressed. It was simple enjoyable, as a fan of the game I enjoyed the small things that changed to adapt this storyline to a 60 minutes episode, and it was perfect.
One of the most expected moments in the whole series finally happened, and then we see Joel much more attached to Ellie, with which this "father and daughter" relationship grows.
The ending is basically like in the game; tragic, sad and even moving one could say. Bella Ramsey's performance continues to be simply magnificent so I hope I can have a lot more of this in the next episode!
The Last of Us: Endure and Survive (2023)
Devastating
New episode of The Last of Us, and this time a little early!
Well, I don't know where to start. In this episode we really met henry and sam after a small introduction in the previous episode; we know a little about their routine and how they manage to survive. Also, we finally know why henry is wanted by Kathleen.
This episode has all. An excellent and dramatic action scene between the two enemies, the resistance and the clickers. The sequence in which all the infected come out is too frenetic and exciting to be able to describe it, you just have to see it yourself.
And also, the devastating and hard end. The fans of the game we noticed the little changes that were in the final sequence, but for me it was perfect. A beautiful last conversation between Ellie and Sam which only makes the end of this sadder.
The best episode of the series so far.
I hope it doesn't slow down the next one, and even if it does, I hope it's still a work of art like this.
The Last of Us: Please Hold to My Hand (2023)
Excelent!
New episode of The Last of Us, and what a nice episode.
Picks up where we left off in the previous episode, now with Ellie holding a gun and looking at herself in the mirror, after that, we see Joel trying to get some extra gas to keep traveling by car, and then, the adventure continues.
The whole episode is really cute tbh, I really liked the touch that they gave to this. An exact copy of the part where Ellie and Joel continue to set out on their journey after visiting Bill.
In this episode we really begin to see more of Joel empathizing with Ellie, and we see one of the mythical scenes of the video game: Ellie's joke book.
Is really a very well done episode that sadly is after an episode as absurdly controversial as the previous one and apparently is paying some kind of consequence for having such a low rating, but it doesn't really matter, at the end of the day the true fans know how to appreciate the work of art that this series is being and it leaves us wanting to see the next episode.
Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming (2011)
From someone who's watching GOT for the first time in 2023
Good start!
I liked this first episod. Since the beginning, you can feel this winter vibes that the show gives you with the excellent locations.
It starts with a group of men riding through the forest when suddenly one of them see a very unpleasant scene, with many human bodies completely dismembered, then, he runs to his companions to notify them but they do not believe him at all, until they themselves face the "white walkers" and...
After that, the rest of the episode is simple introduction, obviously expecting that from the pilote episode, but it becomes interesting to get to know each character as the episode progresses.
If im being completely honest, i thought that this was gonna be a "meh" start, until the episode ended, and then I really wanted to see the next episode.
Even when I don't completely agree with some people who say this is the greatest pilot of all time, it's still a very good start for one of the greatest series of all time.
P. S. Can't wait to see the end of the series lol.
The Last of Us: Long, Long Time (2023)
Lovely
New episode of The Last of Us, and boy, what an episode.
The episode starts with the intro, unlike the first two episodes which started with discussions about cordyceps at the beginning of the pandemic.
Then, in the present we have Ellie and Joel camping in the woods about to start their journey again.
Something I enjoyed was that for a brief moment they showed us something that is essential in the game: walking, and then entering abandoned places in search of extra supplies.
I don't care what some people think, and I know that they will say it because it is inevitable to avoid this type of criticism that the series has been dragging, especially when it is a taboo. But putting that aside, in my opinion what we saw was one of the best character development stories.
Simply beautiful. Bravo Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman.
The Last of Us: Infected (2023)
Save who you can save
Beautiful. If i was asked to resume the episode in just one word it would definitely be that. Probably one of the top 3 episodes of the show without argue.
Start were it ended the previous episode, with our three characters hiding after Joel killed an officer in the night that they scaped, after that, Joel and Tess interrogate and point to Ellie because they still don't believe her about her condition; after talk, they decide to trust a little in Ellie and going into the adventure, and after that... the rest is history.
A beautiful 55 minutes of mixed emotions in wich we have many remarkable moments; not wanting to sound sarcastic but it was a exactly recreation of a gameplay. Everything, last to the down minute detail; the museum, the first real conversation between Ellie and Joel, the "you can't deny that view" scene with the exact soundtrack that sounds in the game, and the finale; oh boy, what a beautiful last five minutes and what a beautiful performance from Anna Torv as Tess. It feels like the first time that I passed the game, even when I already "knew" what was going to happen, but the different touch that they give to THAT scene it's just beautiful. You can actually see that the episode was directed by Neil Druckman himself, it just perfect.
Thank you Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin once again.
The Last of Us: When You're Lost in the Darkness (2023)
Astonishing
I don't know why, but for a moment i though that this were gonna be disappointing, then, Sarah's death happen and i instantly got my mout shut and felt the game vibes. It isn't only a recreation of the game, is that and some more extra; like the beggining explaining what a pandemic is, a little of how sarah's life was, her relationship with the neighbors, and some other details that i'm sure that will make this series not just an exact replica of the game, but something more. The performance from everyone involved is beautiful, especially from Bella Ramsey, it feels like Ellie herself was taken out of the video game and put into the series. I don't know what else to say besides that it was a great first episode and i obviously expect much more. A big applause for Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin for giving us this masterpiece.
