Nefarious (2023)
What a pleasant surprise
The good
The writing and dialogue is almost perfect. The acting by both principals, but especially flanery. Wow. Flanery was outstanding. I can see how many people wouldn't like that most of the movie takes place in a single set, but I was absolutely fine with that. The Dr character had a tinge to dislike him, which I think was the intent, and it felt right. The mood and cinematography was good. The sound was good. Costumes. All felt good
The bad
The plot is good, but it feels they could have done a little better with the first predicted death as it felt a little cheap. The warden felt like he was acting. A little more on the end would have been nice. The dark end could have been way darker, which I think would really make it outstanding, but dark endings don't have great mass appeal... semi dark it is...
The verdict.
Outstanding 9/10.
When's the prequel/sequel, because that feels right to follow this Demon's misadventures.
Lady Ballers (2023)
I wanted to love it
I'm a DW supporter, and I want them to produce great content. This is only OK.
Run hide fight was good, not great.
Terror on the prairie was ok,
Shut in was rough
What is a woman was great doc
Convicting a murderer was great doc
First of all. 1h52m is way too long for a comedy, unless it is absolutely amazing. Should have been 80 minutes. We found ourselves struggling to get to the end. It's a comedy, get in there, make the jokes, get out on a high point, fill it with a story with a remotely plausible plot.
I like them using DW folks for some of the actors, but Boreing as a lead fell pretty short. Some parts of his acting was fine, most was not. Didn't seem natural. Probably keep him to cameos only going forward.
The plot was weak on the whole. The idea was great, but execution is tough I guess. Comedies are not supposed to be the most cerebral of genres, but if all you're standing on is the jokes, they better bring the heat.
The writing/dialogue was fine for the most part.
Jokes were okay without being excessively mean spirited.
They are a new studio, so I am hopeful they will improve.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Let's be honest here...
Very disingenuous reviews/rating of 6.9+
The acting was good for most of the lines given. The visuals were good and the moody mood appropriate. There was a inexplicable tension/anxiety throughout. Good ending with the true antagonist, although not unsurprising. It does stick to you, which means something. Kudos.
The bad. Very slow paced, unnecessarily so. It pains me to say that there needed to more character development because two hours was too much as it was. Their motivations were too cryptic, which is kind of important. Too many times scenes and dialogues didn't make sense, as if too much left on the cutting room floor, shudder.
Digging to Death (2021)
So, this movie is surprisingly funny
Definitely a B movie. We stopped watching after 30. Read some reviews on IMDb. Decided to skip ahead a bit because it progresses so slowly. There are some funny scenes. Probably be absolutely hilarious if we were high. When he walked on the broken coffee cup from days prior that he didn't pick up for some reason, and he was dragging his foot on the filthy walkways like his entire leg didn't work, we were laughing and laughing and he screamed in pain. It was pretty funny. Him going to work bloodied up and acting all nonchalant - comedy gold.
Bludgeoning is daughter was kinda mad - bit of a bad look.
Chained (2012)
Wow- gritty and great
This one is tough to watch, and I've watched them all. I'm surprised I never heard of this one before in fact. If pseudo realistic hostage/captive is your jam, this one is for you. It's slow paced, but I think it works here. Disturbing ending.
It Follows (2014)
What's truly frightening is a 6.8 IMDb rating. Now that's horror
I admit, it's better than 1. It's no better than 5.5 and I feel that is quite generous (there were a few aspects that were pretty good) The only people who should watch this are cinemafiles who have seen all the other horror movies - oh and they will not be impressed. There are so many better horror movies than this. This is more like a drama / sub horror.
