Enough Said (2013)
It cant be my favourite
Enough said is a 2013 American drama movie written and directed by Nicole Holofcener and stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Eva and James Gandolfini as Albert. Eva is a divorced masseuse who takes part in a party with her friends and meets a funny man (Albert) who is not physically attractive at all. However, they go on a date which goes pretty well and they start a relationship. Then, Eva figures out that Albert's ex-wife is one of her clients and friends.Therefor, this fact causes some complications in their relationship.
The movie is an entertaining one which presents a comedy story about dating in middle age after divorce and difficulties that the couples may face. It can also be about making some mistakes that are impossible to make up and hurting people you love.
The actors presented great performances and Gandolfini was wonderful in his role as a clumsy and carefree man. Also, Dreyfus was completely believable in her role as a compassionate mother who is terrified by the thought of her daughter's departure and loneliness.
Nevertheless, the film, irrespective of presenting an adult romantic comedy, their solitary, their need and fears which are wise concepts, contain nothing new and as soon as I started watching the film, I felt I had watched the same story before since the plot was totally similar to many romantic dram movies that a couple starts a picture- perfect relationship, copes with some difficulties in the middle and almost breaks up and finally in the last moments of the film, they renew their relationship.
Although, the film can not be one of my favorites, it is definitely worth watching once as it propounds a new idea.
Find Me Guilty (2006)
a different one
Find me guilty is a 2006 comedy-drama film based on a true story which is written and directed by Sidney Lumet and stares Vin Diesel as Jackie DiNorscio who is accused of several charges and sentenced to thirty years in prison and despite having no knowledge and background in law, he decides to have no lawyer and defend himself in the court.
In fact, most scenes of the movie take place in the courtroom and sometimes it seems to be boring in some parts since it mainly depends on talking and there is no action. Also, the film, irrespective of being an entertaining one, was not really a comedy and it did not make me laugh that much.
I believe Vin Diesel is a quite reasonable choice to act as the mobster, DiNorscio and he presents a perfect performance. In addition, other actors were pretty good and believable in their roles including Peter Dinklage as the lead defense attorney.
The most important and interesting facts about find me guilty that has made it a watchable film are that it is about the longest Mafia trial in American history and the most of dialogues are taken from the original records of the trial. In addition, watching Diesel having hair and performing in a quite different role is surprising.
Find me guilty can be considered as a totally different court drama. Generally in most cases, these kinds of plots are about an innocent person trying to defend and acquit himself. However, the movie is about a guilty man trying so hard to bamboozle the jury.
Although, the film is not one of my favorites, it is definitely worth watching once as it propounds the true story of one the most unusual and interesting trials.
Freedom Writers (2007)
motivating
Freedom Writers is an inspiring movie which is about an enthusiastic teacher who sacrifices her time and even, her personal life to educate disenchanted ethic-minority students. The film is based on a true story and a book named "The Freedom Writers Diary" by a teacher named Erin Gruwell.
The movie is a 2007 drama directed by Richard LaGravenese and starring Hillary Swank, Scoot Glenn and Patrick Depsey. Swank performs as a school teacher in a terrible neighborhood and tries hard to create an extraordinary bond with her students which is based on emotion, love and trust.
Freedom Writers, irrespective of propounding racial issues, is a really entertaining movie which can amuse the audience until the last moments. One of the best aspects of the film is the actors who performed in students' roles since their performances are quite believable and real. In addition, Swank presented a great performance as a compassionate teacher who tolerates many difficulties to motivate her students.
However, I suppose despite the fact that the first half of the movie is totally convincing and moving, it turns to be nonsense and the teacher behaves in a silly way when she loses her marriage and then, decides to stay with the kids. It may seem honorable in the surface, but the type of the personality that is presented for her should be able to figure out a solution to balance both aspects of her life. In addition, the ending is completely predictable and from the first moments, it is possible to find out that the young teacher's effort and dream about educating troubled students will come true and face serious problems with her husband.
To sum up, Freedom Writers is pleasantly amusing and it is worth watching once, although it is not one of my favorite ones.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
A masterpiece
The Shawshank Redemption is a masterwork and an unforgettable movie which can touch the soul. The movie contains deep and priceless concepts such as hope, dream, friendship, hardship and patience.
It is a movie about an educated banker named Andy who is accused and prisoned for murdering his wife and her lover and despite his claim of innocence, sentenced to two consecutive life sentences at Shawshank prison. It is narrated by a prisoner called Red who becomes Andy's best friend.
The film is based on the novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" by Stephen King and starring Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne and Morgan Freeman as Ellis Boyed Reddis who is a prison contraband smuggler.
The Shawshank Redemption is not a depressive movie; conversely there is a lot of humor and life in it and also, warmth and loyalty in the friendship. I believe that the movie is neither a prison drama nor about violence and crime. It has a great foundation and presents profound impressions like hope which is totally adorable and also, freedom and trying really hard to achieve it.
The actors presented great performances and Robbins was wonderful in his role. He could perform quite well as an intelligent, inspiring and a positive man. Also, Morgan was completely believable in his role as a criminal who spent most of his life in the prison and is in deep regret of the crime he committed.
In fact, I had watched the movie before, but when I watched it again, I was stunned by how much better it is on repeated viewings. I believe what makes this film one of the best one ever made, is the messages it conveys.
Awakenings (1990)
So touching
Awakenings is a 1990- American film which is directed by Penny Marshall and stared Robin Williams as Doctor Malcolm Sayer and Robert De Niro as Leonard Lowe, a patient who turned out to be one of a drug's biggest success stories. The movie that is claimed to be based on fact, tells the story of a doctor who discovered beneficial effects of the drug "L-Dopa" for catatonic patients and tried to awake them after suffering many years of fossilization and disability to move.
Awakenings is a good example of how a stunning movie can be produced without profanity, violence and other common items that are used to make a film catching. The movie is so touching and it can involve the audience since the plot is too magnetic and convincing and the ending remains completely unpredictable. There is no doubt that Williams and De Nior presented one of their best performances and every single movement that they made was totally controlled. The story, irrespective of being a true story, is a marvelous metaphor for all of us that are sleeping in some ways through parts of our lives.
However, the movie suffers from some weaknesses and contains some unnecessary scenes. Doctor Malcolm Sayer's character can be mentioned as a good example who was a complex individual that seemed to be scared to death of all mankind and had troubles with making friends. In fact he looked to be scared of all living things and then at the final moments of the movie, he asked the nurse, who was his assistant in the discovery, to go on a date with him. I wonder how these superfluous parts could help to progress the main idea.
To sum up, awakenings is the story of two men and their strong will to never give up who have complex and compulsive characters. The film is about being alive, fighting for it, caring and looking for life in other people even when they are disabled and seem to be asleep.
The Truman Show (1998)
an intelligent film
The Truman Show was made in 1998 by Peter weir and stared Jim Carrey as Truman Burbank. The movie is about a man whose life was created and managed by a director to broadcast every aspect of his life as a massive TV set. Actually, he had lived his entire existence in an extremely huge TV studio and had been surrounded by actors playing the parts of his family, friends and neighbors before he realized the truth and decided to live the spurious town called Seahaven.
I would consider the movie as an intelligent and insightful one in which the actors presented outstanding and believable performances. The idea and plot seem to be completely original which are developed perfectly and can astonish everyone. The movie contains a great deal of symbols and metaphors which make the audience to reconsider and question every single scene and dialogue. Falling a light from the sky which was a part of the show equipment is a good example as it gives us the insight into the collapse of Truman's world. Also, the sea is the main symbol for both freedom and confinement. It represents confinement as it is so vast and Truman is too scared of water due to the fake death of his father in the sea which was planned by the director to frighten Truman to make him stay in the town. On the other hand, it represents freedom as it is the only way to leave the counterfeit town and enter the real world. Truman's final decision to face his fear and sail on the sea can implant this idea in audience's mind that in order to fulfill a dream and win over obstacles, we have to fight against our fears and limitations.
Although it sometimes seems that some movies are paying less attention to the concept of life and using the most unimportant ideas to form a story, The Truman Show is a proof that there can be great and high-grade ideas that are able to be turned into masterpieces. The movie shares both comedy and dramatic moments and the depth of idea and used metaphors have created one of those movies that we can think and talk about when it ends.
