Private Property (2022)
Awful, Just Awful!
This movie got half an hour of my life before I had to turn it off. The script is so amateurish, it may has well been written in crayon. The acting was stunted and monotonous. Ashley Benson probably should have been cast as the homeowner's daughter, which would be much more believable than as the wife and lady of the home. Watching it seems more like watching a high school drama class rehearsal rather than an actual movie.
The only positive thing I can say is that the cinematography was very good; the picture looked bright and vibrant.
Whoever greenlit this ghastly mess should be run out of Hollywood on a rail.
Frasier: Three Valentines (1999)
David Hyde Pierce is a Treasure
A mix of three Valentines stories amongst the cast members. The whole episode is funny, but nothing compares to the first ten minutes featuring David Hyde Pierce's scene as Niles. Pierce is truly a master of physical comedy! He really is an extremely talented actor.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Beautiful, disturbing, and brilliant!
Simply put, this movie is a work of art. The cinematography is at the same time breathtaking yet claustrophobic, and the two actors give career high performances. Dafoe looks and sounds like Ahab searching for the elusive whale, while Pattinson slowly peels the layers of his character's true colors to perfection. As a viewer I was riveted, and couldn't take my eyes off the screen. In fact the entire audience seemed to be in a trance watching this terrifying yarn, feeling like we were going mad right along with the characters. Both actors and the director should be nominated for multiple awards for this film, and Pattinson in particular deserves an Oscar. Be prepared for this movie to haunt your dreams.
Replicas (2018)
Ok Movie, Sexist Casting
If you're hoping for Citizen Kane, this isn't it. If your hoping to put your brain on autopilot and have a pleasant little romp into Sci-fi, Replicas is for you. This had a very simple plot, likable protagonists, and a villain that didn't show his true agenda until the 3rd act. The script could have used a few more rewrites as it was rather stunted and unnatural. The acting was weak, particularly Keanu's. On the plus side, the special effects were good (not spectacular, but good), and the cinematography was very good.
Here is my chief complaint: Alice Eve cast as Keanu Reeves' wife?? With a teenage daughter??? Did they meet while Keanu was babysitting her, and she had their first child when she was 15 years old? Ms Eve looks more like Reeves' daughter, not wife. I looked up their ages, and she is 18 years younger than Reeves. I know movies have had more heinous age differences, but Eve looks like she should still be playing 20 year olds (kudos to her!). Add to the fact that she and Reeves had zero chemistry. Shame on the director, Jeffrey Nachmanoff, who is obviously threatened by an strong, age-appropriate female. His ideas about female roles couldn't be more obvious if he had dressed the young actress in a cheerleaders uniform.
High Life (2018)
Just Awful
I absolutely adore Robert Pattinson, and have proven my devotion by sitting through some eclectic and obscure movies he has chosen over the years. Even for movies that I would not have enjoyed had he not been in them, I could always find a ray of light, something that made the film worth watching. That is until High Life.
There is nothing in this film to engage the viewer... no plot, no character development, no impressive production design - Nothing! I don't know what Pattinson saw in this project, but his choice to make this film is a perfect example of why the careers of his peers Eddie Redmayne and Nicholas Hoult are surpassing his own. Let's hope Batman gets him back on track.
