Tsubaki Sanjûrô (1962)
A conspiracy and a samurai
Nice movie !
I never saw it and it was the first time i saw this movie . It was pretty interesting : the plot let us dive into it pretty quickly and let us know that something happened and a conspiracy and corruption are involved . So our main character will stop this with some help . And during the whole movie is betrayal, making plans , try something , listen and action !
It feel slow sometimes but it was shot in a nice way and feel very dynamic . Even if its pretty repetitive after a while , i really enjoyed it despite a slow rythm sometimes.
The last duel was very exaggerate and very stylistic and i enjoyed it .
The story was quite simple but it was nice to follow. The characters was not very deep but we understand their motivations. A nice movie anyway.
Whiplash (2014)
The Music and the fiction
I dont know . I really didnt found that movie that interesting but many points that i found great :
The pressure that a man can put himself under pressure because his future worried him : the fear to not become what he wanted, the fear to not performed well , Found a job , money , the need to be recognized as an artist .
So we can definitely identify ourself with that main character: his fears become our fears : when he see that his place as a drummer is compromised , the stress and the accident scene let us see how differently he will approach music and his relationship ( i found him more kind in a way with his ex girlfriend but what really is interesting its that all his judgments and his fears about having a girlfriend and have the time to play his instrument was not really true and he realised that ). It was also a little bit sad because her ex had another boyfriend and we see what pass under his nose because of too much ambitions
We got also the drummer and the teacher who kind of swap places at the end : it was Andrew who gave the tone and the tempo. And it was a great payoff from what we saw from the beginning and the power abuse that the teacher did on his students.
I could see also the obsession trough studies or the occupation : the need to do more and more with ignored our health( psychological and physical) . A lot of students can relate about also the fact that Andrew was misunderstood. I like also the talk about famous guys and their work ethic and it was very interesting : does a man need to be pushed over their limits to produce something different , original?? Or does the creativity come without the struggle and the ways that other pushed us to help us . Very nice talk and dialogues .
A nice movie but i found it a little bit exaggerate even if the message is more clear like this ? But yeah not my kind of movie but i found some interesting themes and i really relate with the main character with my personal life and it was interesting to see all the considerations , judgments and the determination and a passion of a young man .
Phone Booth (2002)
The caller
Not bad .
But something bothered me all along ...... it take too much time ! I mean we have that curiosity about the caller : why he called Stu ? Who is behind the call ? Why Stu ?
Many questions . We also try to know what he seeking for . He forced Stu to be sincere with his job , his wife ( that he saw another woman and the fact that he selll big lies ) and that kind of things that we will witnessed all long the movie .
The tension was there : the gun above the phone booth : is he gonna take it ? Yes or no ? If he takes it does the police mans will shoot ?
The rythm get slowed sometimes and even have a little bit repetitive after a while : Stu go in the phone booth and go outside : talk at the phone. But the end was a little bit disappointing : We understand that the guy who delivered the pizzas was not the guy : the real killer get away and we dont learn more . And it end in a brutal way and we are a little bit confused : what was the killer's motivations ? Why Stu ? How he decides to call ?
A lot of things didnt get any answers so yeah a little bit disappointed but overall i spent a great time despite it became repetitive after a while and sometimes the story didnt go forward and we get a little bit stucked and waiting for the police to find the guy . But it have some tension, nice investigations , some hard confessions from Stu .
Pretty mixed feelings but it was good anyway.
Per qualche dollaro in più (1965)
Bounty Hunters
Very nice !
I really like the partnership between the bounty hunters to hunt bigger and get more money . The scene where they meet was great and it really sound interesting and we wondering if they gonna betray each other but no . Money didnt split them away and they were just like two friends hunting some heads of criminals .
El Indio was an interesting character : we also talk briefly about his psychology with that woman that he saw during his dreams ( we will know later that she was Mortimer sister and it was unexpected )
The sound still rock and it give that particuliar atmospher and vibe to the movie that still is a pleasure to hear .
The story also about the robbery was tense and give the bounty hunters and EL Indio different POV and objectives and thats why it was so interesting : the bounty hunters just want their heads ( even if they need to make get out of prison one of them ) and take all the money they can and El Indilo who just wanted the money from the bank .
It was a nice adventure that we followed all along and the guns duels are there and it was very great to see and we can feel the tension too.
A nice movie with some nice gunfights and music . I really enjoyed it like the first movie even if its pretty different but still interesting.
Belle de jour (1967)
The prostitute and the Women
I found the movie interesting .
It start pretty slowly by introduced the place of joy and slowly our main character try one of these place and even work here for money but she will also discovered her own body , her sexuality and pleasure : something that maybe she didnt know before or even try .
So we see her struggling , being shy with the others customers when its about sex but she slowly get used to that . Immediately after that , we wondering if her husband will know that she go in that kind of place ? But for now we see her get used to that new routine and discover the job and how dirty it can be .
She will need to face the consequences and it go a little bit far with that friend of her husband discovered that she worked there and she panic and left everything : her fear become our fear as a viewer . So yeah we suffered like her when she gets a little bit shy during her work and get replaced .
But that job also helped her in a kind of way to become more horny with her own husband .
And we also had that final donfrontation between her husband and the fact that he learned everything from his friend .
Overall i really enjoyed it and its pretty brave to talk in our society something that is very taboo : the pleasure of womens . And how that women experimented by herself some intimate pleasure with other mens and it was nice to see her tried and failed . It was a new experience for her like for us and it was great . Nice movie with an original theme.
Hotel Chevalier (2007)
Love Story at Hotel Chevalier
A nice short and simple story .
So its a man in a hotel who get found by his girlfriend and they start to meet again and to have love ,sex and basically share a night in the Hotel Chevalier . Its that simple .
We see them shared diner and have sex . It was pretty sensual how they undressed , how they kissed and it was welll made . The ambience , the colours reinforce that sensual side ( because its warm and everything look vibrant ) and i enjoyed it and its like spending a night in a hotel with someone we love . Nice Short .
The shots. Was interesting and let us see what happened slowly and that love story between the two characters . Nice and short.
Castello Cavalcanti (2013)
A crash and a town
Sadly its very short .
We recognize the movements of camera of Wes Anderson and how he moves quick too . I need to say that woman who work as a bartender was really gorgeous .
Nothing much to say its a guy who had an accident and arrived in that town and get to know the locals and deal with his problem with the accident .
The ambience and mood was very great and we dive into that short and we are in love with the cinematography , colours , direction, shots and the characters even if , once again, its very short so dont expect complicate characters or plots : its very simple and go straight to the problems . I enjoyed it anyway and found it great.
Yakuza 4 (2010)
Not a story of a father this time !
I really enjoyed it that they didnt make the same rythm as the previous game : its directly mature and mysterious , the kids left .
I was very excited ! But something pissed me off quickly : we dont use Kiryu after a long time and we get into four characters that we will use trough our adventures ( But why ? Sometimes i really felt that four characters was too much : we get a story , another and again another one ! It felt a little bit overwheilming and distracting from the main story but its ok)
I enjoyed the differents stories and sequences: prison, Jail , being a cop, Sky Finance , a final chapter pretty original ( we got 4 vilains to fight). But what i found annoying is the fight sequences and all our characters have different styles of fight but we dont really play each characters for very long so its a little bit a waste to invest in some characters that we will only see later at the end sadly .
But im glad that they didnt make the same mistakes as the previous game : some themes was off topic . Whatever character we play its dark and mature and that s what we want from a Yakuza ! Nice surprise we also see the brother of Majima and that story of that guy who killed everyone in the restaurant was interesting and we wondering who trapped him and you know the story still have some interesting revelations, plot and characters developpment and it get interesting enough to make us entertained again.
Nice Yakuza even if i found it had too much characters to play and too much stories that become distracting instead of interesting. The end was original with the 4 vilains to fight with the 4 characters that we played with all along the adventure . A nice episode anyway.
Yôjinbô (1961)
a movie of inspiration
Nice movie .
I put that title because that movie influenced the fistful dollars movie with Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone. I watched also Fistful dollars too and im shocked that some sequences are kind of similar ( i know its Fistful Dollars who copied Yojinbo ) and i really see some similar scenes and dialogue but i enjoyed more Fistful dollars than this movie.
Fistful dollars have more rythm ,actions and represent a different theme: Western and the music was excellent . Yojinbo is more slower, the shots are more indoor and we got a few scenes of fight too . But we can clearly see some big similarities between the movies but tell differently .
I appreciate this one too but had hard time with the buildup, rythm and characters ( the names are hard to remember ). But some dialogues was very nice and some sequences and compositions was very well made. Nice movie anyway.
Alan Wake II: Night Springs (2024)
Twilight Zone without the morality
Episode 1: 6/10
So the first episode talk about a fan of the writer and it have the urge to save him from his evil brother .
I dont really know what to think : they tried to make the same thing like twilight zone but here it lack the morality and all the behaviour that come . But was entertaining anyway but i expected way more to be honest . A little bit disappointed and yes i understood the comedy and horror elements but it was not really an interesting mix and that psychological elements were completely missing and could give more depth to the story . So yeah that first episode let me a little bit disappointed and even in term of morality : what we supposed to do with all this. ? not transform ourself into an obsessed fan ? I dont really know but i will play the others episode anyway . This one was not for me i guess and it was way too short
Episode 2: 6/10
Im a little disappointed about that episode too .
Of course i was surprised to see the main character of Control ( Sadly i didnt finished that videogame ) so i just know that she needed to find her brother .
It have still that mixed of comedy and horror : here the coffee is something weird and make hallucinations ? A little bit weird
It have a little bit more riddles and that coffee riddles i couldnt solve it so i cheat on internet because i suck at maths . But yeah the end let me more confused than surprised or shocked : what happened ? A conspiracy into another conspiracy ? I didnt really get it .
The horror was there and that episode was More like Alan wake 2 with the shadow and light system but with a more comedy side at the end with the coffee who tried to grab you ? Weird .
I know they tried to make like an episode of Twilight Zone but it lack of morality or sense to be honest and it was too short too. Disappointed overall.
Episode 3 : 7/10
The best episode by far . I really enjoyed the ambience and the atmosphere . The dimension universe was very great and made us see several dimensions (way to play ) and it was brilliant . I love the comic moment, the black and white and the old retro game look . It vary the visuals and the gameplay and it was surprising ( lifeline sort of game at the end)
The sci fi genre get me a little bit cold : i dont really like that genre but it was ok and its the only episode who have less comedy( i didnt mind ) and it was more horror and i really appreciate that . So yeah definitely my favorite episode of Night Springs by far . And the dimensions thing was wow !
Overall a little bit disappointed even if the last episode was great and had some nice sequences and less comedy .What bothered me its that they clearly was inspired by twilight zone but the morality at the end feel rushed or too much implicit to be fully understand and we just did the three episodes without that full message and what they wanted to tell us trough these episodes . I still spend a nice moments but it really was not what i expected to be honest even if i really like the episode 3. But i hope they will make more much more longer than what we had.
What i wanted them to do instead of three short episode ( the two first episodes are clearly non sense in my opinion) they should do a big one episode of 8 hours with a clear meaning and one main character to follow all along with a nice and complex story and characters depth but sad we got this instead .
Per un pugno di dollari (1964)
First Western
WOW!
What else can i say ?
I really was mesmerized by the visuals , the sound ( that music was so original and sound so differently : i never heard that kind of music before and it really fit very well here ), the music .
So yeah the story is about a rivalry about two families and we got that man alone who get involved in that Greed , corruption and murders . The duel was intense too mostly by the music but also by the shots and the close up on the face who make all these more tense.
It was a nice discovery and i really enjoyed the movie . The music was very incredible and give really give a particuliar vibe and ambience to that film.
The story had its own mysteries ( the women with her son and her husband who were trapped). And give credibility to that movie .
The only thing that i didnt noticed and that i knew recently its that movie is like a copy from Kurosawa movie and i really think that despite some similar situations or dialogues , that movie have its own identity and the music give a different vibe to it . So yeah maybe a western remaster of the movie from Kurosawa. Nice anyway
A nice Western !
Goodfellas (1990)
i almost wanted to be a gangster
So yeah its pretty interesting : i mean we just witness the life of a man who is part of the mafia or the Goodfellas and we basically see the corruption: money , violence ,power.
The difficulties and the problems with the police . Its a journey into a mafia life and it was kind of believable even some situations get pretty weird ( when the guy shot the young man on the foot and killed him after), the lies between the friends : the betrayal .
The prison life too , the difficulties to come back in a society after this . The drugs , the illegal business . Some comedy moments too and some cult shots , moments ( the long sequence in the restaurant .....)
A nice movie anyway even if sometimes a little bit too simple and get a little bit old in 2024 when i saw before the sopranos and others mafias theme movies related . But it was great anyway and being a mafia its really problems after problems.
The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)
The tapes of Fake
I dont know what to say except that i didnt get into that false documentary about fictional events of a serial killer .
This kind of found footage movie rely on credibility: i dont know if its the actors or the tapes that put me off several times but i didnt get that feeling that what i was watching was true . Everything fell apart for me : the scene with the little girls selling cookies , the tapes and feel just violent and cruel for nothing and it was over exaggerated and these scenes on the car next to the gas station left me pretty bored and the reaction was weird ( "no handles on the doors" who said this ? In a tense situation this just before killing a woman )
So everything was a little bit too much and i feel too much the "mise en scene" and feel not very natural.
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
My head come off too
Im a little bit sad to put a 6/10 of this movie but its just a matter of subjectivity: im not a huge fan of fantasy and i dont really like to be disconnected from reality but i enjoyed it anyway.
The investigations arround sleepy Hollow , the headless horseman was interesting and give some nice work to our main character nicely performed by Johnny Depp .
The end was a little bit too much out of reality and get into the fantasy more and thats why i talked about this and the end and the revelations about the headless horseman was nice but too much mixed between reality and fantasy . I enjoyed it anyway and spent a great time . It have some nice vibes, mood and a particuliar atmosphere and i really appreciate that part .
So yeah good overall.
El hoyo (2019)
A platform , a repetitive mechanics .... boring
Im sorry but that movie didnt do it for me : too much implicit , a message ? What message?? I didnt understand a thing and its not that clever in the writing i mean .
A lot of vulgar scenes , words and i understand its a message also about solidarity, food waste but all that scenes for that ? It become very repetitive pretty quickly , too much useless scenes and violence even racism sometimes and i still have hard time to know why they took all this time and i was getting more confused and its very not mysterious but more confusion and i didnt get it to be honest .
The characters are not deep, the story is very simple but meaningless ( it end more confusion because too much implicit), too much repetitive and it was a little bit too much for so little .
So what was that message ? I dont know and its not that clever or smart writing but only a simple thing that they tried to stretch it and to make a whole movie about it but it didnt worked , at least for me . Big disappointment.
The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023)
The last stop at Boring County
This movie is a complete mess !
The start was promising and let us know that something is happening but everything gone completely illogical and dumb .
The only thrill that i got from this movie was the beginning when the waitress know that the two guys were part of the robbery and when she tried to phone the sheriff , she got interrupted by the two guys . The only scene that i found tense to be honest .
Whats the movie about ? I dont really know . Its two mens who tried to get away quick because they made a heist and there is no gas .
The decisions of the characters make just no sense and they act in a illogical way and the mise en scene is a little bit too much visible : it should be more dynamic and need to be natural and here its a complete mess.
When all the guys are dead and it remain the guy who hide under the table : im sorry but at this moment i completely get uninterested and witness a build up that was not necessary .
Im completely shocked with the reviews of the users of IMDB : did we watched the same movie ? Im really confused : what is so interesting in that movie honestly ? We see people come and go : the tension get down very quickly and i still dont understand why the guy took the waitress in hostage : why ? So many things that have no sense for me !
It was promising but fell apart quickly in the story, characters and purpose of the movie . Avoid that movie !
L'homme à la tête en caoutchouc (1901)
Invention and creativity
Still impressed by the work at this time and how that man was pretty creative and tried something . Its tell in a funny way with that man getting his head bigger and bigger until it explode suddenly . So yeah this one was much more longer than the four heads shorts and look nice too . So yeah i really like this kind of way to test things and see how it work and i still dont know what they used and how processed they made to create this kind of effect but i really enjoyed it and found the work interesting . George Melies was clearly ahead of its time and produced some nice effects very early with his creativity and just for that :
Well Done !
Un homme de têtes (1898)
A man ahead of its time
Dont know what to say !
Except WoW!
Just look the time when it was made and just realised something : that man was just very creative and to be honest i dont know how he made this ! Maybe by cuts ? I dont really know !
But it look very clean and the effects its very well made and work .
Im impressed and even if its pretty short ,its pretty impressive for this time and that man must have work on its own very hard to pull something like this that was very ahead of its time and look very well made even in 2024 . So yeah very impressed and cant say much because it was only a minute about that effect but it was WOW !
The Great Train Robbery (1903)
A old robbery
A Nice silent movie .
Pretty interesting all along even 121 years laters . We got everything we need trough the images and we didnt need more . The music is pleasant too and make it tense when it need to be and get more calm when its more calm .
The visuals give us everything to understand and we didnt need any introduction or dialogues because everything its clear : we saw the mans who want to robbed who attack the train and try to steal and we get worried when they attached the man : who will stopped them then ? But e we got that man who get helped and saved it in a suspensful and tense way . It was short and intense and love how the story is tell only by the visuals .
Nice.
El ángel exterminador (1962)
People stuck in a house ...... and ?
Its my first Bunuel movie and im...... pretty disappointed ; i didnt get into that movie : the beginning was interesting but everything become just some people complaining , acting like some childs and i didnt found the purpose of the movie .
Its a little bit absurd : some people stuck without no reason and even more stupid everything get a little bit non sense , illogical and we dont. Know what to wait . The characters are just complaining , the story is completely missing and we got just a weird situation that i still cant understand why the director put things like this ? Its very boring and get pretty childish . Nothing happened during this hour of movie and they used some weird ways to entertained us : Bear, animals in the house but what it supposed to mean ?
Does all this movie want to tell us that people cant live together ? Cant really listened to each other ?. I dont have any clue !
Weird situation , weird movie and weird characters .
When i saw the reviews , i cant stop thinking : did i watched the same movie as the others ? I mean it was clearly non sense for me and it dont served anything : the story is very flat . I really dont understand the purpose and let me disappointed .
Score: A Film Music Documentary (2016)
Movies and Music
A nice documentary about the music in the movies and it was very interesting but here too i think they could go more deeper . We have a lot of talk and some of these talks was not necessary and it will be more interesting the composition and how they composed it .
But anyway its enough and we got to see some famous movies : Star Wars , Indiana Jones, Titanic, Jaws, James Bond .....
We got also the story about the orchestra and how it evolved with the years with Zimmer and that was interesting but i need to say that i was disappointed to not see the exorcist mentionned : very disappointing but otherwise , that documentary was interesting enough to see how original some composers must be to try new things with new instruments and have that open mind .
Very nice documentary anyway even if i wanted something more deep with the composition , the notes... But it was good enough.
The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing (2004)
And..... CUT !
A Nice documentary with the past and present of editing with the use of the hands or the technology . Editing remain the same thing over the years despite that now we do it more digitally than before who was manual : they litterally cut the frame .
It was interesting to see all the cuts and examples with known movies but if i can make one complain about that documentary is that they didnt show more in depth and stay pretty superficial and didnt show that much . We hear more talks of different directors and editors trough the whole documentary and it was instructive : i like the part when they talk about the russians and their editing during war and how they discovered the power of emotions and influence trough the cut .
And thats true , as a editor we can feel powerful in some way by cutting , making decisions and try some things to make that cut interesting by reactions .
I found the documentary interesting enough even if i prefer something more deep but it was ok and it cover most of the stuff about editing : how it was discovered ? By who ? The progress of editing and the power of it too . So yeah its kind of correct as a documentary and i enjoyed it anyway and found it instructive and interesting enough.
Pamyo (2024)
Soul,spirit and confusion
Im pretty disappointed of the movie .
It have some interesting scenes ( i enjoyed the moment where they tell what can contain the coffin and they tried to open it at the same time : nice suspense build )and well done effects , make up and a nice photography .
But the movie bored me mostly by the story that go deeper and deeper .... into confusion . I just finished it and it was kind of unclear and implicit moment that make me confused more than really thrilled or scared . Its a slow rythm , slow dialogues too . If you are interested, i found another movie with that kind of horror but much more well made even if its pretty slow : "the wailing" and i dont really like to compare movies but enjoyed more the one that i mentionned than this movie . A little bit overhype in my opinion .
So yeah its very slow and you need to take patience before it tell everything but even if it tell you all, you will surely end up into confusion too probably or just bored by the slow rythm .
Its frustrating because it have some nice shots and some nice effects but i couldnt really get trough the whole movie without being confused or bored . Sad.
Pánico en el Transiberiano (1972)
The Devil Express
Really suprised by the movie .
I found it on IMDB and i said why not and i didnt regret to have watch it .
Just a little something that i wanted them to do its to play more with mysteries with the box at the beginning and get slowly revealed but anyway i spent a great time watching it .
The sound design really helped the immersion too and love also how they made it more tense during the killing and the panic.
I never heard about that movie and it was pretty interesting . I like at the end that the one who get possessed by the demon was the religious man and yeah nothing else to say just i really appreciate the ambience , the special effects (white eyes), the sound , the story ( even if its a little bit more sci fi with the monster parts and who is he and it dont go that deep in explanations).
I really recommend the movie and i enjoyed how they made it.
Devil (2010)
devil go away !
Im pretty disappointed with the movie .
Cant really say that it intrigued me in any kind by the stories , characters and the situation . It was pretty weird and the events get illogical and the reactions of the actors put me off many times and we get some exaggerate moments or illogical and i really didnt get into it even by the policeman's investigations and that religious man saying weird things that didnt feel mysterious by any way .
I get bored pretty quick and i didnt see any devil except some lights going on and off at many times . It lack of purpose and we had that kind of situation going on in the elevator put i dont really see the interest : there is maybe a devil inside : so what ?
I dont know it really get me off many times and i didnt found it that interesting in any way despite a curious start but fall apart pretty quick sadly.
