Your Place or Mine (2023)
not romcom-y enough.
Is it pleasant? Yes. Is there a great cast? Yes. Is it a decent enough script and plot? Kinda? The problem I have with this movie is it's trying to be too many movies. There is the story of the leads being separated for so many years...(which doesn't help things) And then the Ashton / Son dynamic. Is it a story about love or helping a kid find himself? Both are here, and both kinda work. I think the movie is worth watching-ish. It's not dreadful in the slightest.. let's call it a light romcom. To release it around Valentine's Day is pushing it.
The main problem I have is I really like Reese and Ashton. But their chemistry is lacking in this film. They have so little on-screen time together. I had the same problem with Sleepless in Seattle. I think Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks are great, but I'd rather watch You've Got Mail than Seattle hands down. Maybe even Joe vs. The Volcano.. There are some funny parts in Your Place or Mine but I'd say the supporting actors are more fun to watch.. Minka, Theo, the guy next store brought more to this I feel. Also wasn't feeling the movie score. I'm a big music fan, and I love the Cars, but I would say after the 4 Cars songs I was getting annoyed. I understand it was Ashton's Dads favorite band, we get it, but a few of the tracks felt misplaced and after awhile the "joke" got old. Think this had way more potential, but the ball was dropped in many places.
So I can only give this 4/10 guy next door butt cracks.
The Ugly Truth (2009)
...And Boy Is It!
Hmmm. Looking for an older romcom and heard about this. Although good in parts, leaves a lot to be desired. It has some funny moments for sure.. ubt a few that would definitely make your grandmother blush or turn away or both. (Let's face it, you wouldn't even start watching this with your grandmother. This movie was still holding on to what I would call, "The American Pie Formula" in 2009 no less. Where gross-out was considered good, or atleast part of the formula. (My how far we've come.) Again some laugh-out-loud funny parts, but meh. Acting is decent, characters are decent.. and that's this movie in a nutshell for me... decent-ish.
I give it 4/10 felated hotdogs.
Closer (2004)
Darkly twisted
I was searching for an old RomCom of which most, if not all of these actors have been in at one time or another. I regret that I didn't put 2 and 2 together until half way through this.. I understand this isn't a RomCom or trying to be one per se, but it has a few elements that could lead you to believe in kindness and goodness before plunging down the dark rabbit hole that it does. I love these actors (although not super familiar with Clive Owen.) I understand Julia Roberts can't make 12 "Pretty Woman", Jude Law can't do another "Holiday" and Natalie Portman just stretches herself period, but I was hoping for a little magic, which I didn't really get. The acting is good.. bar none. The story is realistic-ish but super complex and after awhile, i just didn't care enough anymore. More tears were shed by the 2 female leads in this than probably multiple other movies they've done in their careers. Most of all I just didn't like it. Didn't like the characters, didn't like where things were going. Didn't like the convoluted plot which begs you to wach it again, which I won't do. It's a shame to have such a talented cast for this sub-par-wanna-be-hackneyed-crap. Pass on this, you'd be better off.
I give it 3/10 who really cares?
No Strings Attached (2011)
A fun, comfortable romcom that is worth checking out.
A fun pleasant comfortable romcom. I really like this movie. It's a good go-to in a very large field. It is not a cinematic master pierce like some of these reviewers were looking for, but it is very enjoyable. Good chemistry between the characters, when they are in "love mode." Meaning when she is doe-eyed and he is looking at her affectionately. This isn't always the case as it shouldn't be.. Natalie Portman's character is cold-er and she gradually warms up to Ashton as the movie goes... which is how it should go. Portman plays it perfectly. I have no idea why some reviews here say "no chemistry" because they obviously weren't watching this movie. It has chemistry in the parts that it should.. it's a very Hot/Cold movie that warms as it goes. Good acting, decent soundtrack, other well-known faces.. what more could you ask for?
I like it and have seen it a bunch of times..
I give it 8/10 dad's girlfriends.
It Happened One Night (1934)
Fun Comfortable Fun
You can't go wrong with this one. I love the fact that on their escapade through many types of transportation you get to see a lot of what America was back in the 30's. How people were, society etc. Obviously this is a movie and not a documentary but a glimpse into it. Great acting between the leads abounds or this would have been pretty dry. It's fun, it's comfortable and we all know where it's going. But it's a nice ride to get there.
I give it 9/10 carrots.
My Favorite Wife (1940)
can you be funny and corny at the same time?
It is a funny movie for sure, and Grant and Dunne have great chemistry... but it drives me crazy when the whole plot can be explained so simply. But I guess we wouldn't have a movie then right? There were just so many times I wanted Cary Grant's character to just man-up and say what needed to be said, or do what needed to be done it was slightly painful. Definitely worth the watch, but not sure on repeated viewings.
I give it 6/10 carrots.
Indiscreet (1958)
A Comfortable Chemistry
Chemistry is there between Cary and Ingrid, but more of the comfortable chemistry between actors who've worked with each other before. I like this movie for the most part, but it does tend to drag along in parts. Older movies do this more so, but this one especially. Great acting, great scenes.. Cary Grant dancing solo was a very fun watch. Just a few hiccups overall, but worth the watch.
I give it 6/10 scotch and sodas.
To Catch a Thief (1955)
Grant and Kelly are classic
Love this whodunnit Hitchcock classic. Cary Grant and Grace Kelly make terrific leads and have some real undeniable chemistry between them. The movie is beautiful as it takes place in the south of France and is a joy to watch. It moves slowly, as movies from this period do, but it is satisfying as it unfolds. A good rom-com-mystery. Recommended.
I give it 7/10 seductive glances.
That Touch of Mink (1962)
Not a fan of the over-used and tired jokes
I wanted to like this movie, i really did. Cary Grant, Doris Day romantic comedy.. what could go wrong? Unfortunately the question is really what could go right? Not much. Barely any chemistry albeit from Day's doe-eyed gazes at Grant. Small-town girl treated like a queen in the big city.. Don't get me wrong there are some enjoyable moments in this film, the fashion, seeing New York business and sophistication in the early 1960's... The problem on the whole is very little plot. Too many tired jokes played out for too long over and over. The supporting cast makes this movie much better than it is. Truthfully there are more enjoyable Grant and Day movies to see, even if they aren't with each other. Will not see this one again.
The Proposal (2009)
Fun and Worth A Watch
What Can I say... interestin tension? Fun and worth a watch but I don't see Bullock and Reynalds as a match of any kind, especially these characters, but maybe thats the point? Nothing earth shattering, but some beautiful cinematography and locations. Good performances.
Definitely, Maybe (2008)
was not expecting it to be this good. a nice surprise.
Sometimes it's fun to just watch a romcom, unload your brain, get entertained and know where things are going. Well this is a different type of romcom... mystery is baked in based on the premise and that gave this a different type of refreshing twist. It was a little wonkey in the beginning, trying to establish how this is going. Truth be told I wasn't really excited about the father/daughter aspect of this movie, but was very pleased in how it was a non-issue for the vast majority of the movie and then was blended in expertly. The soundtrack for this film was surprisingly good, and will be looking up some of them for future listening. Ryan was pretty good in this, as all his female leads. Who will be the mom? Lots of fun finding out.
Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
it's abbot and costello alright...
If you love them, you've probably already seen this. Fun and very nonsensical, but that's usually how these roll. A fun and campy old halloween movie that you could show your kids.. but they'd probably get bored. Perfect for having on in the background while handing out candy? Yes.
I give it 5/10 creaking coffins.
How to Steal a Million (1966)
A fun heist movie
A fun heist movie where there is some nice chemistry between leads Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. I love Audrey's forgery father in this and his naïveté and brashness surrounding "his" artwork.
I give it 6/10 Confused Museum Guards.
The Tunnel of Love (1958)
I was confused
I watched this out of a weird curiosity.. where will it go and how will we get there? I think this film was miscast... I don't know a lot of Doris Day.. but this seems to serious for her. The womanizer Gig too. My mom and I rolled the dice on this one and we ended up in a very different place than we intended, I wanted an older, light, romcom type movie and how could you go wrong with a title like, "Tunnel of Love"? Well this movie deals with more serious issues and clumsily so. Too much misunderstanding between the characters.. I give it 3/10 cocktails.
Easy Living (1937)
Fun but a bit thin
Like this movie and was a fun watch, but felt the chemsitry between the leads was lacking until the end. Lots of fun crzy parts, but needed a strong male lead for Jean to play off of. Worth a watch for the Automat scene alone.. YES these things existed. A good movie on the classes and bringing them together. 6/10 Mink Coats.
The Last Wagon (1956)
Not your average western
A solid western with a good story, and fantastic acting. Good twists and turns throughout with beautiful sceneary. Not a big fan of westerns normally, but appreciated this one. I give it 5/10 wagon wheels..
Topper (1937)
Fun for the time?
The sight gags were good for the time, but the movie relies too much on them. It was distracting, meh. Did not hold my attention.
Pot o' Gold (1941)
A Screwball Musical of epic preportions
Jimmy Stewart in a screwball comedy is saying something. This is such an odd disjointed and distracting movie.. but it sure is a lot of fun. No oscars here for sure.. but there are still some fantstic singing and dancing numbers.. almost too many - it's distracting actually. The plot is paper thin, and the numbers don't drive the plot. (if you can find one.) It's silly, it's fun, it's light (perfect for a wartime movie for the troops), and it's chock full of entertaining singers and musicians.
It's dippy but fun. I give it 5/10 schizophrenic harmonicas.
It's a Wonderful World (1939)
The screwiest screwball
To say this film is a screwball comedy is quite an understatement. Some of Jimmy Stewart's facial expressions are hysterical throughout. Very enjoyable movie though I did get a little lost in a part or two because it is nonstop. Good chemistry between the leads and one thingI really wanted to note is the superb performance of the supporting cast during the screwiest of the screwballness.. lots of fun!
I give it 7/10 Trusting Eyes. Get some popcorn!
Bringing Up Baby (1938)
Silly Silly Silly
Yes it's Hepburn and Grant, but I find it too much for repeated viewings. --
I give it 5/10 sneaky leopards.
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Cannot get more classic than The Philadelphia Story
Grant, Hepburn, Stewart. One of my favorite classics! -- I give it 8/10 Hollywood stars!
The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss (1936)
Early Grant where you can see the charm forming
It's a short one, but we'll done. In its compactness it actually covers a lot of plot points. I enjoyed this and was happy and satisfied with the ending. I see that Grant was cast in a bunch of these shorter movies in the 30's, I hope to find another that was done this well. -- I give it 7/10 cool cats!
Libeled Lady (1936)
Screwball Romantic Comedy is an understatement.
A Fun, fast-paced movie on romance, money, the power of suggestion/manipulation and a whole host of stars. Very enjoyable.. though it takes a little to get into the plot and actually care for any of these characters as they are spread pretty thin in the beginning of the film. Jean Harlow is great but her character is the most one-dimensional of the bunch.. but that really lends itself to where this film is going. Powell and Loy are fantastic, but they pull off the situation they are in beautifully as they don't know each other and have to feel each other out. Loy's character is a little stiff in the beginning, but you learn more about her and what she has gone through on the night of the old fishing trip. The scene of her and Powell at the boat house dazzles with emotion and chemistry and I love these 2 together more and more and will continue to seek out their other films. I super enjoy that you're not really sure how this will all end up until the end of the film.
-- A must watch for old movie buffs I give it 8/10 Slippery Perch! :D.
Big Brown Eyes (1936)
A nice watch when you're in it
A fun mystery movie, it keeps you on the edge. The chemistry between the two leads is very good. A lot of interesting camera angles And style, but The ventriloquist scenes were hokey. Characters are interesting and fun to follow. I agree with an earlier review that says it's not very memorable, but A nice watch when you're in it.
