Creed III (2023)
Just doesn't have the magic
Creed III is an alright film but not as part of the Rocky franchise. It doesn't belong there.
In every Rocky movie (maybe except 5) I have been on the edge of my seat in the final fight, even if its the 100th time of watching it an I know the outcome, this however, just fell flat.
There is a level of expectation when using a name from the Rocky universe and Creed III couldn't have been any further away from reaching it. Even the death of Apollo's wife seemed like it was a desperate attempt to pay homage to the original movies, but ultimately it was brushed over and brought nothing addotional to the character. No inspiration, no depression to climb up from, nothing deeper. Just felt a bit of a waste.
The Silencing (2020)
Fairly enjoyable, but the writing is frustrating
Just finished watching this. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was believable and some stunning scenery. However:
1. Doctor is the killer after his daughter was killed by a drunk driver and left to die in the woods. So he takes vengeance by killing similar age girls?! Really?!
2. They have their vocal chords surgically removed (why this doesn't automatically lead the authorities to start investigating medical professionals, I'll never know) but there is literally no explanation for it. No reasoning. You'd think given that the film is titled "The Silencing", there would at least be SOME form of link.
3. The killer fights with the protagonist, knocks him out, attempts to kill the girl by spearing her through the stomach, only for the sheriff to arrive, think that the killer is her brother so shoots the protagonist. Then NOTHING happens to her. At all. Ever. Even if the main guys does drop all the charges later on, there is still a decent amount of time up to that where she's still on active duty like nothing happened.
Found myself skipping through parts to save myself the frustration.
Overall good potential and beautiful scenery, but let down severely by lazy writing.
Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)
Love Keanu Reeves but...
The first two movies were really good fun. You can't help but find yourself laughing or even just smiling at scenes, mainly due to the innocence and naive joy the characters bring.
However, Face The Music was a bit of a let down. It still had the vibe of the first two but just didn't hit the mark. I read that Alex Winters took acting lessons to get back up to scratch and it shows. It was as if Bill never left our screens. Keanu Reeves however, just seemed so lacklustre. Perhaps it's all of the darker roles he has taken over the years (Neo, John Wick, Constantine) but the fun of Ted was completely lost. Not once did we see him smile and there was a severe shortage of "dudes" and air guitars. I am a huge fan of Keanu Reeves work, genuinely. But I really don't think he did Theodore Ted Logan justice in this movie. Just far too serious of a performance.
