Mars (2016)
So bad
Another show where a dimwit drama gang goes in to space, makes every mistake possible, then spends hours making facial expressions for the camera. No discipline. No structure. No science. Just endless bickering. In season 1 there were "flashbacks" to modem time with real people talking about how we should go to mars, but apparently that was to relevant because season 2 switches to Greenpeace activists in kayaks harassing oil drilling platforms.
The Last Czars (2019)
Unusual format I haven't seen before. Could have been better. I want more!
Wow. Just finished watching. What is up with these negative reviews? Where are they coming from? You are seriously going to 1 star because of a nitpick or misunderstanding of what you thought you were going to see? Please stop throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
Yes, there are historical discrepancies. Yes, a lot of history was skimmed over. Yes, there is nudity. Yes there is cursing (It's rated TV-MA!), Yes the "bad guys" / "good guys" and who was at fault are all very, very debatable.... but angry history buffs, prudes, and people with emotional ties to the politics be damned. I liked this. I liked this a lot. It got me interested in the history of the era, and curious to understand of both sides of the conflict and why they did what they did.
Obviously the series could have been better if it had covered more of the timeline before and after, more accurately represented the individuals involved, and delved more in to the rational of all the key players. If you are going to switch between documentary/commentary back to the drama, you need to pay more attention to the accuracy of the era you are in.
Acting and production where terrific. Hope to see more like this in the future!
Another Life (2019)
What the hell is even that?
I love the premise of this show: Aliens send a mysterious thing to earth, we need to figure out why, and go find where they are sending messages. Sounds awesome! Well...
The CGI, music, sound, ship, design, ambiance, etc are all good to great. All of the actors, actresses and uhhh actoresses are really doing a terrific job with what they have.
But the dialog is bad. Really bad. Why is it this bad? Why is everyone relentlessly at odds with one another over the dumbest things? Why is the crew so childish, non-cohesive and...idiotic. The arguments don't make sense. Why is every other word an F bomb? Where is the back story? Where is the believable science technobabble we love that explains what is going on? Can that dude please stop playing loud pigeon noises at the alien object? This is our best and brightest in the future? Come on!
I'm actually enjoying the show more by just watching it muted. Hoping to figure out a way to just mute the dialog and leave the rest of of the audio enabled though.
Good Omens (2019)
And that ladies and gentlemen is how you adapt a book to screen (mic drop)
Wow.
I thought the book was very good, but this is the first time I've ever seen a TV show (or movie) that actually enhanced the book. There were a few pieces tweaked and modernized here and there, but I was really taken aback at how closely the series followed the text of the book. Most of the tweaks added to the story and made it that much more engrossing.
The casting was excellent. Loved the intro, style, narration, pace, settings.
