Bombay Boys (1998)
Intelligent, funny, best soundtrack, and best Indian flick of the decade
Waltzing Matunga, Mumbhai, Naseeruddin Shah, gangsters, hijras, socialites, NRIs. This movie has something for everyone, and it's all good. The single funniest Hindi/Indian movie you will see this decade.
The movie is about three NRIs who come to Bombay from the US, UK, and Australian. There's love, lust, violence, drama, singing, dancing... Everything you'd expect in a Bollywood pot-boiler, but this one is both enjoyable and intelligent.
Traffic (2000)
All you could ask for.
No compromises here. Traffic takes a long, hard look at the narcotics industry in North America and manages to entertain at the same time. The triple plot allows you to see the whole industry with multiple perspectives. The movie is visually stunning, loved the different filters for the three locations.
That the war on drugs cannot be won, and is hypocritical to boot, is a message that needs as much air-time as it can get.
Wirey Spindell (1999)
Funny like nothing else.
Wirey's journey through the final days of bachelorhood, liberally sprinkled with flashbacks to a sexually active and diverse childhood.
It's definitely not a feel-good romance movie. It is a romance movie, but one without illusions. Everyone's an adult here, not your cup of tea if you want another Sleepless in Seattle or Notting Hill.
