The Last Big Thing (1996)
Best movie you've never seen
The film revolves around a man who believes that all forms of media are obsolete. The idea behind his art project is to unmask the ridiculous culture that we are bathed in. Naturally, the film takes place in Los Angeles/Orange County. He attacks stand up comics (caw, caw, caw), rock bands, models, blockbuster Hollywood films, and touches on many other mediums. Eventually, he finds himself in the sights of the weapon he has set into motion. The film is five years old and rings more true every day. It's the best description of post-punk anger I've ever seen. It's also one of my top 10 favorite films.
An American in Paris (1951)
Astounding musical
Speaking as one who usually finds the genre of musical dull, this film blew me away. The performances are totally engaging, the music original, and the direction daring. It amazed me to see a 20 minute dance piece at the end with no dialogue that enthralled me as much now as it did audiences in 1951.
Dead Man (1995)
Best film of the '90's
A dark masterpiece. Even though it swims with negative space, one is riveted to every frame of film. The photography is some of the best ever filmed. The movie changed my life. Then I went and got the soundtrack and it changed my life too. Do not leave this life without having seen this film!
Shock Treatment (1981)
most under rated musical
This film is one of the least appreciated gems in the category of the musical. It's far too odd for the normals and it usually goes over the heads of the kind of people who are usually associated with Richard O'Brien's films. It's a commentary on our media-ocracy and psychobabble culture. I personally believe that it is O'Brien's masterpiece.
