Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
The body without the soul
I only watch the first episode but I will stop right here. I don't like it at all. I can easily understand why the original writers left. In addition to some real bad choices compared to the original show, we get only an empty shell here. It's just special visual effects but there is nothing more. Everything that made the original show a masterpiece is missing in this one. Especially the comedy aspect. It's totally serious and boring here. I would advise Netflix to stop here and not pursue in this mockery. This is not Avatar, the last airbender. We could think that children might still like it... but what would be the point given they would like much more the original show as well. A failure. 5 out of 10 for the visual effects work.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Thunderclap - Part 2 (2023)
I must be different ...
It seems obvious that I am « wrong » given all those excellent critics regarding this episode. I even read that this was the best episode in all anime history.
I still feel the need to give my personal opinion about this.
Yes, this is a very dynamic episode trying to stage an epic battle between two protagonists. But, as strange as it may seem to you all, I didn't feel anything. And to be honest I got almost bored at some point. Even if the animation is good, I found it quite difficult to read. Sometimes I was not able to understand what I was looking at. This is like too much to see, and this becomes poorly readable.
I also clearly dislike the voice-over which is here to explain what we can't understand. It's supposed to be an epic battle, and once again we have a voice-over instead of an epic soundtrack. Speaking of which, the music is clearly not at the same level as the animation.
Beyond this, I have no kind of attachment for any of those two characters as we don't really know them. For me, this removes the epic sensation I could have felt for some other characters. Even if no character is actually really developed in this show.
Domain expansion, malevolent shrine. It's basically an annihilation of everything up to 200 meters radius. And we also have a thorough explanation by the voice-over for this. Lol.
I am under the impression that people just want to see fights, whatever the story the is, or how well it is written. This is not my case.
Everything is not about animation. It is not « the faster, the better ». To me, a good fight or a good episode is entirely related on how the story is built, on how we get to that point, and what are our expectations during the show. And in that regard, I really think there was nothing « epic » in that episode.
It seems like I am giving a very bad critic on this episode but don't get me wrong, I still think this is a good episode, but not that good. I've seen better on many occasions. If I had to give examples, it would be for instance Lee vs Gaara, Gai vs Madara, Saitama vs Boros, etc... I actually have dozens in mind. But whatever.
I'm glad that this episode gave so much positive feelings to people. I'm just disappointed it didn't do the same thing for me... but as we say : everybody has different tastes.
Bleach: Sennen Kessen-hen (2022)
This is not Bleach for me
That's one of the very rare time that I am not at all aligned with the rest of the opinions.
I am really surprised that the vast majority of people see this animation as a masterpiece.
As a long-time Bleach fan, from the beginning, I don't recognize Bleach with this arc. I feel like I am in front of totally different animation. Bleach used to be funny while emotional. It used to take time to build characters and story, so we can grow attached and live epic moments that made this show so memorable. The battle against kuchiki and the first bankai, the battle against Grimmjow while hollowfication, the battle against ulquiorra, against aizen, etc ... and so many other moments that were amazing. Without forgetting dondochakka and pesche.... Ahah. We were able to see Ichigo getting stronger after a lot of training sessions. There was a lot of character development, and there was still a lot of room to jeep going with the royal palace, after Aizen was defeated.
But here, in this arc, I don't recognize Bleach. Even the main essence of Bleach has disappeared : soul reapers and hollows. Hollows are not even part of this show. Quincies don't even look like quincies. They feel like they are just monsters, and their powers are utterly ridiculous for the main part. That doesn't feel right at all. They have nothing to do with quincies, or even Uryu, his father and grandfather. This is non sense, and quiet stupid in my opinion.
Of course the episodes are dynamic, but this is fights over fights without any kind of interesting story, or character development. I found myself bored during almost all episodes just because i'm just watching fights over fights, and quiet ridiculous for the main part. With always the same pattern : You think he wins, but finally loses, and then he wins, etc... And what's with the same idea all over again about body or mind control ? All of this makes this arc very shallow. The music is super repetitive as well. The pace is way too fast.
Lots of characters are also popping from nowhere (kisuke, orihime, sado, ...). There is no coherence whatsoever. The author took the liberty to do whatever he wanted. We barely see ichigo's training. He is finally sent to the seretei, just to get back to the royal palace 5 mins after ... Shunsui kyoraku doing nothing while everybody gets killed. Ukitake totally missing... Also this weird idea around kenpachi zaraki... killing unohana to get stronger lol. I don't buy it. And all of that just to get crushed by kids. Rukia and Renji becoming stronger than captains while we don't even see their training. Absolutely nothing is credible. It's bad ideas over bad ideas. Everything is too easy, to simple. It's not smart. I could go on for a while but, overall that's just bad for me.
I'm glad if people likes it very much, I just don't understand how. I feel like the author wanted to close the book after Aizen, just because the story seemed unfinished. He had to address the royal palace, and the « King », because it was Aiden's goal. But for me, he did it in a hurry, without taking the time to build a good story, with an interesting plot. And above all without respecting his own creation.
Blue Eye Samurai: The Great Fire of 1657 (2023)
Could have been much better
This show had everything required to be excellent.
I didn't like episode 6, simply because it was not credible whatsoever. Mizu should have died 5 times. I don't mind when it's a bit too much, but this was way too excessive.
And this episode was even beyond this. It was like the opposite of something credible. That bothered me. Tons of archers unable to kill more than one enemy. Guns are of course more efficient. But with the whole army gathered and concentrated in the same path, no arrows able to reach more than one target !? The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise was way more credible in that regard. Bows and arrows can easily kill. Especially when archers are hidden, while the army of foes is in plain sight.
But what bothered me the most : there is always something to save Mizu. It is simply way too much, almost like a parody. We can still turn something unbelievable into something almost credible when it's well written and directed. Tarantino is an example. That's absolutely not the case here. This is poorly written.
And last but not least, I don't see anybody talking about the vilain and the multiple occasions he has to kill Mizu, but instead choose to run away... what the hell ? Is someone able to give a theory, because I am very curious here. The lack of credibility completely ruined my pleasure to watch this show.
And bonus : Akemi, after all those weeks looking for Taigen, totally ignoring him when they finally meet again !? This, most likely just to keep a potential future love story between Taigen and Mizu under their hat ? This is so not coherent and therefore bad.
I rarely write a review. I do it this time because I'm frustrated to have seen something average while it could have been something truly great.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Mixed feelings
I think there are a lot of good things in this movie. First and foremost the theme itself. What can be more topical than potential humanity extinction due to mother nature. This satire is a very good way to tackle this while making people ponder over the overall inaction of our governments facing climate change. This movie goes even beyond political aspects and puts directly the survival of all living beings in front of the technology race. This gives rise to existential concerns on which we can think and discuss for days. What matters most ? What's the endgame ? Maybe we have forgotten where lies true happiness, and that kind of movie is always welcome to help us taking a step back. However, despite this great intent, I often find the irony way too rough. In my opinion this lack of subtlety unfortunately makes this movie lose all credibility. And that's really a shame given the fact they « really did have everything » to make a memorable piece. But I guess that's a matter of perception. Besides the content, It's still really really good to see Leonardo : outstanding performance once again. The cast is really good. In any case, I'd say this film is a must watch.
Loki (2021)
It's sad
I remember a not so distant time where I was watching daredevil, jessica jones or even punisher. Daredevil especially which is no doubt the best marvel tv show. It was so enjoyable. The fact Loki is not good is not much of a big deal , however , it is sad that such mediocre shows are created and released while actual very good shows have been canceled. The storyline , the writing , it is just so messed up and absolutely not interesting. I like Owen Wilson, I like Tom Hiddleston. But besides them, there is nothing worth watching here. That might be enjoyable for children but that's all. Please do something and get Daredevil or Jessica Jones back. Disney is killing Marvel.
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
Very frustratring
I've been watching GoT since the beginning, and clearly this is the worst season by far.
We've been waiting for 2 years to finally see it and It's hard to believe they took so much time to build this ending.
I won't forget some epic moments in that show, but I'll definitely forget this last season.
They may have put a lot of efforts in the form but there's nothing in the substance.
No Logic. No Thrill. Nothing.
We are seeing images... People are dying and... whatever.
We don't care anymore because it's like we are not watching the same show.
