Naean-ui geunom (2019)
Totally worth watching!
Think '17 Again' with comedy which hits and a gangster twist. I was caught off guard by not only how funny it is, also the fun action scenes. The performances of Jung Jin-young and Park Sung-woong were brilliant and totally had me bought into the premise. Sung-woong in particular steals the show in the final act of the film.
The only thing which prevents it from getting a perfect score in my opinion is some of the plot points take a lot of suspension of disbelief. However, any gripes with the movie were easy enough to overlook considering how good of a ride it was!
The F**k-It List (2020)
This movie doesn't belong in 2020
Considering the culture of the world in 2020 and how things are shaping, this movie feels like it would have been great had it been made 20 years ago. The problems the characters face are totally unrelatable to 99% of the population. It is as if the creators have been stuck in a time machine and still believe going to college and fulfilling our parents expectations are still relevant problems. They are, but they have been rehashed hundreds of times in the past.
The only forgiving things this movie has going for it is it is midly entertaining. I also liked that the main character has dynamic morals and is willing to listen and learn.
Ni no kuni (2019)
A decently entertaining, underdeveloped film
I played the first game and was wowed by its animation and art. When it came to the movie, I had no idea what I was getting into. Upon finishing it, I am somewhat unsatisfied, yet I hold on ill will toward the film.
In my opinion, a 100 minute movie was the wrong format for the story they attempted to tell. There were some really good ideas that weren't fleshed out enough. The final twist should've hit a lot stronger, yet for some reason it didn't. Even though 100 minutes was not enough time to fully develop all their ideas, it still could've worked if they scaled back the amount of themes they wanted to portray.
If you like anime or the Ni no Kuni games, give it a watch. It won't be something you fiercely defend and recommend to your friends, but it's good enough entertainment to get you through some downtime. The movie is very nice to look at, I'll give it that.
Dejimon Teimâzu (2001)
The most underrated show out there. Tell your friends.
An absolutely brilliant story disguised as a kid's show. If you are an adult, I highly recommend watching this show. It will remind you of what it was like to be a kid.
Digimon Tamers is a show with far too many overarching themes to be shoehorned as a particular type of show. It is a coming of age story; it shows the beauty of child-like innocence and the loss of it; it is a story about loss and grief; it is a story which raises environmental awareness; it is a story which poses extremely difficult questions such as what life matters and who decides the fate of those lives; and it is a story about destiny. There are too many themes prevalent in the show to name in this short review. I could write for hours about how good this show is. I will only talk about one important question raised from watching this show. I hope you can come up with more on your own after viewing.
What is life, how should life be respected, and who chooses which life deserves positive treatment? Tamers poses a very difficult question straight out of the gate. We are presented with these life forms and are told they are beneath humans. As the show progresses, we learn that they have intelligent thoughts and they can be our friends. However, because they are not made of physical matter, does it mean their pain is inconsequential? Yamaki, one of the first human characters we meet, uses this logic as reasoning to spread the belief that his actions are just. It relates a lot to how we treat animals. We convince ourselves they do not have personalities and feelings to justify our cruel actions towards them. Who decided that only cats and dogs deserve to live happy lives? It is the same with Digimon. They have the potential to be both friend and foe, but one bad egg shouldn't decide the fate of an entire species. This is but one philosophical question Digimon Tamers poses.
Of course, it would be foolish to write a review about an anime without mentioning the animation. The artwork itself is nice to look at. However, even taking into account the time it was produced (2001), the animation is not great. They clearly cut a lot of corners when it came to animating shots. Still, it is serviceable and you will get used to it after a while.
Despite this, the story is so well crafted it heavily outweighs any negatives present in the show - meaning I can only give it a 10/10. It is up there with shows such as 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' and 'Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood' in the way it makes you think critically about important issues and events we will deal with in our lives. On top of that, the show is very funny. Just watch out for those surprise feels attacks. Oh, and *spoiler* (only reason I had to tick the spoiler box) this show has one of the best redemption arcs in modern storytelling. Not quite Zuko from ATLA good, but not too far off. Keep an eye on the red scarf! *end spoiler*
I hope this review encourages at least one person to watch Digimon Tamers. You won't regret it.
Shingeki no Kyojin (2013)
Gets better as time passes
At the time of this review, there are currently 57 episodes in the series (2 left in the current season 3). What can I say about this show? The first season starts with a bang, but then suffers from a jarring change of pace. However, once the second season starts, you will find yourself gripped by the storytelling. That's not to say the first season is bad -- it is very entertaining in its own right. In fact, how the first season is laid out sets you up perfectly for the story to come.
The show is not afraid to explore different genres and doesn't rely on gimmicks or shock value to keep you hooked. Each episode improves upon the last until you eventually get to the point where every episode is a 10/10. Every person should be watching Attack on Titan, it is a masterpiece in the making. Just make sure you don't google anything about the show - it's the most spoiled show on the internet.
