Guest House (2020)
Maybe I have weird taste, but I liked it
I wouldn't say it was brilliant, but it had everything I liked in a movie. A solid cast, funny leading actors and a good storyline. I didn't feel like turning the movie off at any point, which is always a good sign. It made me laugh, but maybe I'm one of the few who enjoys this type of humour. I'll go further and say that I actually enjoyed the movie, which I find quite difficult to say lately for most of the trash coming out of Hollywood.
Girl Lost: A Hollywood Story (2020)
Attempts to tackle a potentially real issue
The movie attempts to tackle a potentially real issue, but there are so many holes and flaws in the script/plot that it becomes implausible.
Much of the acting is not great. This doesn't help the storyline. In terms of the mother who claims she has no other option to feed her child, the story never explains why and leaves the audience questioning her motives. Why can't she clean houses, become a waitress or work in a factory like many other people have to do each day but wish they didn't have to? Maybe there's a genuine reason, but the movie doesn't tackle this important problem. So I was left assuming she was just after a quick way to make money and hence I couldn't feel the compassion that perhaps I should've been left feeling.
With the young girl, I actually felt a little compassion, as this is probably a very real problem in Paedowood. Her father is shown twice in the movie and you don't get a feeling as to whether he's abusive or just doesn't care about her. Unless I missed it, the story doesn't explain where her real mother is either, so you're not left feeling she has had a tough upbringing and had no other choice than to run away. I was a little disturbed with how young the actress appears to be in this movie and can only assume she is not over the age of 18. To show her in so many provocative scenes where she is half naked is quite sickening and I almost turned it off. I just felt that this might detract from the real message and actually fulfill some paedo viewer's sick fantasy instead. I realise this happens in Paedowood and elsewhere, and it is very confronting, especially the way in which she is lured into the industry by a person she believes she can trust.
I give the movie a 5/10 because it attempts to deliver a strong message, and no matter how poor the acting was, I thought the storyline was almost realistic, but the movie itself was not executed well. With a bigger budget, I'm sure it would've been a whole lot better, so kudos to the production team for developing a half decent movie with good camera work, lighting and a half decent script.
True History of the Kelly Gang (2019)
Not enjoyable
When you think about the type of audience a Ned Kelly movie would likely attract, you imagine big burly bearded men with Ned Kelly tattoos covering half their backs. You don't imagine artistic sophisticated aristocrats or 3rd year Arts students. So why was this movie made?
I'm pretty sure the types of people who want to watch a Ned Kelly movie do not want to sit through this utter garbage, which is incoherent at times, slow, with incredibly annoying background music... or noise. Firstly, don't call it True History if it's not. I don't care that you're trying to express some sort of irony, it doesn't impress the average person. If your intention was not to impress the average person, I give the Producers 10/10.
The first half of the movie was okay. Once I'd invested more than an hour of my life in it, I had to see it out, hoping it would get better. I wanted to see how the Kelly gang became one of the most feared gangs in Australian history. All I saw was a bunch of kids wearing dresses, on the run after one ambush and then captured after planning the very next ambush. Sorry, but my 12yo son can write a better screenplay.
I give it a 4 because the performances were brilliant. Great acting wasted on a terrible movie. My recommendation is if you like artistic movies, you should watch this. If you just want to see gunfights and sh%t blowing up, steer clear and don't waste 2hrs of your life.
Fantasy Island (2020)
Why Michael why??
I'm actually really disappointed that Michael Pena made this horrible movie. My son really likes his movies and was so excited that he was in it.... until we started watching it. It started off reasonably okay, I guess. The acting was decent. However, the plot is just awful. The story itself had promise, but wasn't convincing at all. Michael Pena's accent was terrible and I really couldn't stand the way he pronounced 'fantasy'. Overall, terrible movie that I would never watch again.
