The Poseidon Adventure (2005)
Rubbish, at best!
I had to negotiate, no, beg my family to let me watch this TV-remake over all their favourite TV shows. Now I am regretting that decision.
I must say, I have never really hated a film, just disliked it. This has to be one of those on the "hate" list. I don't even know where to start! The characters are so 2-dimensional. You'd may as well watch the paint peel on the hull of the ship than see their often campy, crappy dialogue. It had to be the special effects that did it for me. Based on a real ship, I think, I thought the new look over the 70's original was really good. I liked the fact they had brought it into the 21st century. But when I saw the terrorist plot, I said "uh-oh". The plot was to sink the ship. They didn't just do that, they sunk the whole TV show. How could a small hole in the ship tip the whole thing over? Titanic had a hole in it, yet it never rolled. (Not to mention Titanic had better graphics, and it was made in 1997!). I remember watching the capsize scene in disbelief. It was stupid! Everyone followed the motion of the ship, or should I say walked to the other side of the room, waiting for it to "roll". The actors and extras knew this was going to happen, you saw them practically waiting for the first sign of the ship tipping, then they all ran to the edge, running up the walls as the ship went over. Practically nothing hit anyone. Sure, one woman held onto a table, yippee! I also remember seeing the swimming pool tip. I never saw -any- water come out of it. I was like "huh? Isn't water supposed to be in there?"
But enough about the bad stuff. Let's focus on the positives shall we? Oh, there aren't any, my bad!
Poseidon (2006)
Give this film a chance to shine
This film has such a bad name from so many people, yet I think it is a brilliant film. Some people don't realise how much effort has gone into this film. People say that everything is CGI. Not true. The only things that are CGI in the whole film are: the ship, the wave. That's it. Everything else is sets. People actually were thrown around the place. Water did come in to the ballroom. I think some people don't give this film enough credit. The first time I watched it, I was in awe. It was such a convincing film. The look of the ship and how it interacted with light made it look so real. Sure, some of the film is far-fetched. And sure, you don't get to know the people on board. But that is because of the pace. They can't stand there for half-an-hour, spewing their guts out about themselves when the ship is sinking. The pace of the film is supposed to be rushed. The ship is sinking, and it's not going to stop sinking to let the people stop for a break. So I say give the film a break. If you haven't seen it and are judging it on what your friends/ family have said, ignore them. Watch it for yourself, you may find the film is actually better than what others say. And as said in the title, give this film a chance to shine, it's better than what people say
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Brilliant
This film happens too be one of Studio Ghibli's best ever. Full of magic and brilliance, the sequence of events truly roll from one to the next and so on. The delightful tale of 10year-old Chihiro being stuck in a magical world full of spirits and having to work at the local hot springs is brilliant! It's a movie I was in awe for 2 hours. The way the camera moves around the world really makes it seem like you're right there with Chihiro, working at the hot springs and following the adventures of Chihiro! I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and all it has to offer Spirited Away is a film you'll want to watch again and again! Prepare to be blown away by this magical tale
Fruits Basket (2001)
Absolutely brilliant!
It makes you laugh, cry, and about anything else that makes you feel good inside! Yes, Fruits Basket definitely has to be one of the best animes to ever hit our screens. Although the manga accompanying the series has a lot more detail and has a lot more to offer, the series seems a let-down some how. But seeing as the production team only had 8 mangas to work with at the time (Natsuki Takaya broke her wrist and was in hospital), they did the best they could. I think the anime is really good, and the open ending really lets you imagine what could happen next, or if not, you feel like a lot of questions are left unanswered; such as What about the Horse and Rooster? Why cut out so much? etc. But overall, this series really deserves recognition as a great series.
