The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)
Low expectations. Still negatively surprised.
I guess this is just what Hollywood has come to. I always expect more, but no. The audience still get treated for what we are to them; cold cash.
It's hard to say where this movie went wrong, because not much went right, really.
The movie is set in the amazing dystopian universe created by Suzanne Collins, that the first 2 Hunger Games movies could, to a fairly high degree, do justice.
Unfortunately, this movie does everything but. The storyline is scattered all over the place, none of the characters are remotely interesting and the writing is just... oh man. Stop singing!!!
The only two good things to say about this movie, are:
1. The production value is high (kudos to the people trying to do their job, even when the state they work in is way below their standard).
2. Some of the actors do a good job, considering the scripts they've been given. Tom Blyth and Viola Davis are the two main names here.
Unfortunately, the singing Rachel is also in the movie, so you kind of forget that some of the actors actually try to do a good job.
Needless to say, I won't be wishing for any snow this winter.
Gen V (2023)
Are these ratings a joke?
I cannot fathom, in any way possible, that anyone would rate this show above 8.
This feels so weird to watch. You feel like it SHOULD be a good show, because it's set in the same universe as The Boys, right? But the more you watch, the more you feel like you're watching some weird teenage show , that the annoying girl from your old high-school class guaranteed you was sooo interesting. Kind of like Riverdale vibes (how was that ever popular??)
And yet, you feel yourself drifting off into sleep, the more you watch.
I don't know man, I wished I like this, because The Boys is an amazing, innovative show, but this is just so half-assed and bad.
Please, just stop. Stop it now.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Very interesting idea, decent execution.
First off, I wanted to give this show a 7-star rating. As many other comments say, the horrendous, cringeworthy casting of the VIP's drag this down a star in itself. It literally ruined a whole episode. It almost seems surreal just how bad they are at acting.
Apart from this though, the show is very gripping with a great idea behind it. Had the idea been executed to perfection, this should would easily be a 9, and maybe even 10. I'm not a big fan of the extreme acting that's often practiced in Korean movies, and this isn't any different. The actors play well, no doubts, but sometimes it's just too much.
Scenery, camera-work and story is all pretty well done.
But really, what makes this series unique and worth watching is the idea behind it. No matter if you like the korean film-style / acting, you should definitely give this one a watch - you won't regret it.
Warcraft (2016)
Low expectations, positive surprise
I went into watching this movie, when it came out on Netflix, with very low expectations, as I had heard a lot of bad reviews from WoW/Warcraft fans and enthusiasts, as myself.
This movie really surprised me positively, however, and I don't understand the hate this movie has been getting. It really went through the most important parts of the First War in a well-executed way with decent acting and great visuals.
I am definitely hyped for the next movie, which I hope they'll release.
If you're a fan of the Warcraft story or just fantasy in general, this is a must-watch imo.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Very intriguing.
Although I enjoy great movies/series and good books, I usually find myself distracted by work or social media whilst watching or reading. It can be annoying, but I generally tend to disregard it, as I feel like I can keep focus in both places simultaneously.
However, I just finished episode 3, and I have not yet been distracted by anything - my focus is strictly on the show, because it is really intriguing to me. I love the main character's odd persona with the intuitive, striking intelligence that just puts her on a completely other level than the other kids (and also, it is very rare to see good child actors, as we saw in E1). The 60's in America is also just an interesting time to observe in film-making, as there are so many political and sociological questions, of which some can easily be perspectivated to today's society - and I feel like the series does this in a very nice way, neither too much nor too little.
I haven't read the book, so I can't say how good the series is in comparison, but I am very, very impressed so far, and I will likely be giving a 9 or 10 star rating when I'm finished with the whole series.
If you're considering watching this, you should most definitely do it. In these boring times, great stuff like this makes me really happy.
