Well made with a gut-punch
I can't quite decide how to rate this movie. The depiction of childhood is note perfect and enjoyable for the first 40 mins or so and then a very bad thing i won't spoil happens. I have seen many art house movies with random tragedies dropped into the plot unsuccessfully but on this occasion it really hits home. I grew up as a bisexual brown haired boy with a blonde haired best friend so i can certainly relate! The directness of the camera also really helps you to see the emotions of the characters. The second half of the film doesn't quite land as well as the first but i would still say it's a great film overall.
Of an Age (2022)
good acting but not enough going on
The shakey camera work for the first 15 minutes of this film was almost enough to make me want to switch this off. Why anyone thought that was a good technique is beyond me.
The interplay between the two main characters is well done but the script is lacking plot eg he rushes to a dance competition then suddenly doesn't care and dance is hardly mentioned again.
The final third also does not deliver enough to rewrd our attention- like the flip forward should come with a bit more explanation of what they did in between times. We are simple catapulted to a heartfelt sad ending that by itself is quite well done.

good God this is bad
A disorganised mess of a film with no redeeming features. No character development, thin plot, trite script, woeful acting. Total waste of time. Avoid at all costs.
