Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
Awesome
This movie was fantastic; in fact I think so far it is the best of the series. After some disappointment with Prisoner of Azkaban I was holding my breath going into this movie, but it not only met but exceeded my expectations. It is not an exact copy of the books which I know did disappoint a few people I know but I also understand there is no good way to make a 734 page book into a movie and keep a movie audience interested, esp., when a portion of your audience doesn't necessarily read the books. However I think people need to remember that this movie is an adaptation, which means it takes the major plot ideas and uses them for a different medium.
The kids did a great job in this movie, it is so much fun watching them grow as actors as the movies progress. Emma and Daniel both turned in winning performances and I am convinced that Rupert was born to play the role of Ron Weasley. Another thing I loved was that Oliver and James Phelps were in the movie more and that they were acting more like Fred and George in the books than they have in previous movies, taking bets on how the Tri Wizard Tournament would turn out and tormenting Ron. I also noticed that Bonnie Wright and Matthew Lewis played a larger part in this movie; hopefully this means we will see their parts increased in the next few movies.
The movie did a great job of capturing the humor as well as the darker side of the book. The Yule Ball was beautiful, the icy theme, and Emma looked gorgeous. The tension between Ron and Hermione was just as I had imagined it when reading the book.
Going into the movie, the scene that worried me the most was the graveyard, but this did not disappoint. They kept the terror that goes through that scene without watering it down. Ralph Fiennes did an excellent job as Voldemorte; he was just as creepy as I pictured him in the books. I am also not ashamed to say the end of this scene and the beginning of the next one (when Harry returns to Hogwarts) as well as the end of term speech Dumbledore gives, brought me to tears, which while that part of the book is sad, the book did not manage to get that response from me.
I highly recommend this movie.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
a fun movie
I found this movie wonderfully predictable. To most people that may not make sense, but I have read most of the books that these characters were taken from. While there were major differences between the characters and the books they were taken from, for the most part it was like seeing old friends, i knew what the various characters would do becuase they kept the proper personalities. I even figured out who the villian was because I noticed one of the major works of victorian literature that was missing from the movie. And you do not need to have read all of these books to understand the movie, but there is a bit of a lack of character developement that you may find, but my friends who hadn't done the reading also enjoyed the movie.
It has great visual effects, some really good action sequences, and a really nice looking car.
Oh if you know anything about these characters and other victorian books, see if you can catch the little references they toss. I recomend this movie for someone who wants a good adventure movie.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
horrible
This was one of the worst movies of the summer of 2001. It seemed to go on forever. The ending was just odd. A good bit of it seemed to be a knock off of bicentential man, and it really just left me walking out of the theater disapointed. I will give applause to Haley Joel Osment, who did turn out yet another wonderful performance, I only wish the material that he had to work with was better.
Young at Heart (1954)
One of Sinatra's best
This is an excellent movie. It is deffinatly one of the best Frank Sinatra movies I have seen. It has just the right mix of drama, music, and a dash of light laughs. The music is great, and while Young at Heart is one of my favorite Frank Sinatra tunes, Frank's rendidtion of Gershwine's Someone to Watch Over Me might be the best number in the movie. I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a good light drama.
Ocean's Eleven (1960)
a must see
This is a must see for any Sinatra fan. This is a classic movie. One of the most wonderful parts of the movie is that the whole plan seems so simple, that in this age of technology it almost seems uncomprehensable that it would work. And it also has one of Hollywoods best twist endings. This is definatly a great movie.
The Mummy Returns (2001)
Great Movie
Unlike some of my fellow imdb users, i thought this was an excilent movie. I am both a big Brendan Fraser fan and a huge fan of mummy movies of all sorts. This has to be my favorite movie in both of those categories. While the original is still one of my favorite movies, the mummy returns has both better plot and character development. The effects were awesome, the music is better than the original. I think the little kid is adorible, and i like the way that they developed the charactor of Evelyn and also the transformation of Rick into the family man. I think that this is a great movie and a must see film.
