I Am Legend (2007)
Starts with the script
I saw Omega Man, with Charlton Heston in the title role, in the 70s and enjoyed it, as an interpretation of human self destruction and based, a also, on the novel, I Am Legend. The new film's script has a depth in characters and culture with writing that presents a real possible result of human developed catastrophe. Francis Lawrence's direction was very good and the editing was fantastic, keeping me on the edge of my seat through the film. The settings and special effects made one, almost believe, that an actual city was used to film the movie after an intensive makeover. The performance of Will Smith, in a mostly solo performance, is very Oscar worthy. The additional characters were great, falling into place as comfortable pieces in a wonderful sci-fi puzzle.
In summary, a most enjoyable afternoon viewing.
The Ballad of Jack and Rose (2005)
Remains of the 60s counter culture?
I was a mid 60s college student. I heard philosophy of life from many & varied points of view. This film examines how one who followed a very liberal viewpoint of life in the 60s & 70s might respond to life in later years. When life changes and one is required to respond to life situations from a far less intellectual point of view or long term belief, is when one would discover... we are all human when the bottom line is presented to us. I still believe in people and want to believe the power of the people can actually make a difference, but I had 2 children & chose to join the regular life. I found myself, as Jack does, handling instances of life in a different manner than I might of expected I would in an earlier time in my life.
La marche de l'empereur (2005)
A more than excellent film
I know people who have been to that godforsaken place. Think of the yards (forget feet) of film that were shot to make what is a great film with great editing. I ask folks were are going to go see it, if they cried when they saw Bambi? If so, take a box of Kleenex. Very frank story that shows that some of nature's stories are simply amazing!!! I would bet a film on how the film was shot would be just as amazing! I've shot underwater in 36 degree water, but I felt warm, but -80 just goes beyond the range of expectation! I would like to know a little more statistical information (or a source for it) on the impact of the penguin's predators. I encourage everyone to get everyone they know to go watch this film!
Sebastian (1968)
Absolutely marvelous
I saw this movie when I was in the "game" that was played in the movie. I was with a group of men in a foreign land though, not in England with a group of women. Lord knows I would have preferred the latter. I have not seen this movie since the 70's and would love to acquire a copy of it. What does it take to get a DVD made?
