Liam (2000)
Been there, done that
It is surprising to read some of the reviews obviously from the young and wealthy. Life, even 50 years ago, was like this in the north of England. A Hovis advert maybe but a totally brilliant film, beautifully observed, with all the settings and trimmings of the era.
How many others can remember this kind of school, the hard life in the home, the metal bath - usually in front of the fire. The film was faultless. The children superb and the adults just as I remembered them. 10 out of 10
Quills (2000)
frightening history told in a gripping tale
Brilliant script. Tremendous acting from the whole cast. Gripping from beginning to end. Hilarious and terrifying.
One could smell the dank evil and yet laugh along with the poor inmates of this French mad house. Who were the mad? The patients, prisoners or those who looked after them.
If you enjoyed 'Plunkett and Macleane' you will love this.
The Optimists of Nine Elms (1973)
sensitive, sad but very true to life
This is a very sad and sensitive film, beautifully filmed in a very poor area of London just behind Battersea Power Station. If you enjoy Merchant Ivory films, the 'Kidnappers', or 'Whistle Down the Wind' then you will appreciate the delicate undertones of this story.
It is very true to life in the late 60's in London and shows the resilience of the children and the sadness of a once great Music Hall star.
