I Married a Woman (1958)
a true classic
i just saw this movie for the first time ever the other day. i watched it because my uncle loves it and keeps telling me to watch it. i found out it is out of print and to me (now that i've seen it) that is a crime. i fell in love with the film and wonder why that can't make 'em like that anymore. and as for george gobel this was the first i've seen of him but i can tell you he was great in this film. now i see why my uncle goes on and on about him. if this film ever gets re-issued i'll be first in line to buy it. four stars for this film. and a big four stars for lonesome george.
A Hatful of Rain (1957)
best film ever
written in perfect form and directed the same. as for the acting well don murray turns in the best performance of his career. eva marie saint and lloyd nolan are in top form and henry silva is excellent as mother. anthony franciosa steals the show with possibly the best performance in a motion picture. this film is so good it should be made available on video and never be taken out of print. it is one of those as perfect as film can be movies. if you get the chance to see it don't pass it by for anything.
Reconnaissance Pilot (1943)
holden still in top form
away from hollywood and still in top form on this 30 min. doc/short is holden. if you don't like shorts or war films you won't enjoy this one however if you are a war film fan or a bill holden fan you'll love it. the war scenes are excellent and the other scenes have that touch of holden all over them.
Young and Willing (1943)
top notch film
william holden stars in his last film before going to war. the film did not get the credit it should have so i'm giving it now. it is a near perfect comedy that keeps going and never slows down. william holden susan hayward martha o'driscoll and eddie bracken all turn in fine performances but the always great robert benchley steals the show. this film is well worth a four star treatment.
Meet the Stewarts (1942)
classic hollywood comedy
they don't make 'em this good anymore!perfectly charming 40's comedy with holden in young but top form.supporting cast is excellent.this was one of holden's last films before going to war and ended up the lower half of a double bill...and shouldn't have.
