Inside Man (2006)
Dull, dull , dull! Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!
I was really looking forward to this movie, having heard so many good things about it. The first 15 mins set of at awesome speed, then it almost grinds to a halt, the story is dragged out and the film is VERY confusing, leaving things unexplained, and having very inappropriate funny scenes. Living in Glasgow Scotland, iam not sure how the race issues are in the united states, but spike lee almost shoves them down your throat in this, and places very OBVIOUS token race stereotypical characters in their supposed rightful places. Someone else mentioned it on the IMDb review of this film, why the hell were they digging that hole, maybe I just missed it, but its the simple things like this that were NOT explained. The film is so slow in parts, you are left with nothing to do, but guess the inevitable escape route of Clive owen's character, the big twists people spoke of just never happened, and the film ends so abruptly its almost insulting! I had SO many questions about this movie it just failed to answer, I have to say the heist movie has been done 10 times better than this, with lesser known actors, William Dafoe was playing a roll the tea boy could have played, he is 1 of Hollywood's best, and so under used in this its laughable. A spike lee joint, he should be put in the joint for this dross! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Saw (2004)
Satisfyling gruesome!!
This opened in the UK on October 1st, the billboard advert read will you see, then in massive red letters SAW!! There was no press screenings of this in the UK, i think to give the film more suspense and for people to guess what it was all about. However it has been a film that word of mouth has got people singing its praises, and now the radio adverts are comparing it to se7en with the usual this is the best horror movie event of the year. The film was shown at the sundance film festival, and i think opens in the USA on October 29th. When hype like this gathers for a movie, it normally go s hand in hand that you will leave the cinema disappointed. Not this time, what we get is a very clever hour and 40 mins of excellent editing and direction. The cast are all but unknowns apart from cop played by Danny Glover, this i think helps this movie as a horror, surrounding it in mystery without big named stars doing the red carpet, and telling you all about it. The se7en comparisons were always gonna be made, and once you ve seen saw you ll understand why. But i think its more a nod to se7en rather than a copy of it, the film does leave a lot of questions to be answered, and has some very genuine surprise twists! I hope they don't go down the usual Hollywood way and try to answer the questions left posed, by making saw 2, time will tell. For James Wan directorial debut, this film marks a good start from him, i am sure he s a director we will see more from in the not to distant future. Highly recommended, go see on opening night to cut down on spoilers. 8* out of 10!
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
SOME Spoliers contained in the text below!!
I went into this movie not knowing what to expect, i knew it was a Speilberg movie but new Kubrick had his finger in the pie to. First of all let me say all of the perfomances were 1st class Hayley Joel is defienatley a contender for an oscar next year. What i was supprised at was the movie only being a (12) cert in the uk, as it had a very eery feeling thru-out the entire film, the burst of laughter at the dinner table at the start of the movie from David gave the whole audience a jump!! In some instances i wasnt sure what direction the movie was gonna go next, but i think that was the directors intentions. Many people in the audience were gettin restless at the lengh of the movie some even given up on the last half hour, maybe they had had enough, or maybe they wanted to leave on a high where i think the movie should have ended with David staring at the blue fairy! This is a film that in 20 years we will probally look back on as a classic. Way ahead of it's time, in what will be a movie that is debated in years to come just as 2001 a space odessy is, i continue to try and make sense of this movie, i know i have witnessed something very special and cant wait a second viewing, although i dont know how soon i want that to be. Roll on the DVD, 1st Speilberg commentary perhaps? Over all 8/10.
Russkies (1987)
BRINGS BACK GOOD MEMORIES
POSS A BIT OF A SPOILER!! I first saw this film in 1988 and i LOVED it. As i remember it, it is about 3 young kids who find a russian sailor washed up on a usa beach, and they decide to hide him, but he wants to discover more of where he is and leaves where he has been staying. This is a very true 80's movie and one that reminds me a lot of my own childhood as when me and my brother and friends were younger we used to hide and go on mad adventures. I would say if you like 80's movies like the Goonies and Adventures in baby sitting you will love this ace of a movie. I would argree srtongly with the other person who has commented on this film, it is a VERY difficult film to find anywhere, most of my current friends dont beleive me that it even exists i have not been able to source it from anywhere!! Anyway if you do get to see it ENJOY!!
