Ted Lasso: Make Rebecca Great Again (2020)
Wow. Fantastic and such a great feel good factor. Brings back your faith in humanity
Wow, came across this series completely by random yesterday and binge watched. Great characters, you can identify with all of them. Great episode, love the Roy Keane-like Roy Kent but love Ted and all the others. And so moving especially the Karaoke scenes and the sad tearful scenes towards the end, so moving especially with Ted's text to Rebecca accompanied by a great soundtrack including Strange by Celeste. Perfect, we all want to be decent and positive like Ted and strive to be better people.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Wow what a movie. A must see. Did the critics see another movie?
Was wondering if I should go to the movie after reading many of the negative reviews by the professional critics. Glad I didn't take their reviews too seriously. Wow, what a movie. Really enjoyed it, tale of rags to riches, sadness, love and a celebration of the life of the wonderful Freddy Mercury. Moving scenes, great chemistry between all the stars / band members. The Live Aid scene was phenomenal. Great songs spread throughout the movie. I understand that some artistic license was used in some parts of the movie but that's fine.
Go and see it, one of my favourite movies this year, and I'll probably go back and watch it again on iMax.
Dresden (2006)
Good entertainment, not to be taken too seriously
As an English man living in Germany, it was interesting to see a German made production on the historical events surrounding the bombing of Dresden. One needs to understand, this is not a documentary, it is for the masses, so one should treat it as such. As an Englishman in Germany, I always hear one side, the Brits were war criminals, it, the bombing should never have been allowed. I mention this to my British relatives and friends and they have completely the opposite view. To give credit, the film provides both sides of the argument. It shows Bomber Harris giving his opinions as well as the reservations of some of his subordinates. It shows the horror of the bombings on the civilians. It shows the persecution of many persons including Jews and the extreme depravity of the Nazi regime. Combined with a rather hard to believe love story (Robert appearing at Anna's engagement party, dressed as a Nazi), it was fun entertainment backed by some significant history. Remember, as a love story with some history, it reached a much larger target audience than a pure documentary would have done. And it was entertaining and a tear jerker, at least for my wife. So lay off, it's good decent entertainment, whilst bringing over some of the historical background.
Lost in Translation (2003)
Reasonably enjoyable, slow in parts, not the best film this year.
Having been to Tokyo many times on business trips, I could certainly identify with alot of the things depicted in the film. This made it enjoyable. However, I did find it was a wee bit too simplistic and sort of over played/ over dramatised a lot of the intercultural differences. For instance the scene with the exchanging and receiving of business cards was interesting and they are important in Japan etc., but it did seem to me like, yeah well okay, what was so funny about that. This seemed to be the case in a lot of parts. I also found the film quite slow in parts. Don't misunderstand me, the film was enjoyable, but I wouldn't quite put it into my top films or even film of the year. Well I guess it is a matter of taste. Some of my work colleagues (who also have been to Tokyo) were really enthusiastic about the film similar to some of the reviews I read. I guess its one of those films you like or you don't like! Finally, I have to say, I thought Bill Murray was great and well, Scarlet Johannson, she does grow on you through the film and is a really attractive character and person as the film develops.
Cast Away (2000)
Okay, but didn't do as much with story as they should've done
I really wanted to see this film with all the hype. I am a great fan of Hanks, and tremendously enjoyed Forest Gump and Apollo 13. However a word of warning firstly! Don't go to see this movie if you are flying any time soon. That part of the film was well done, i.e. the crash scene.
I was expecting great things of this movie, as it had an all star cast of Hanks and Helen Hunt. It was an average movie and rather disappointing as they could have made a lot more of the plot possibilities. There were alot of open ends, the movie was slow. They don't seem to have made the most of potential plot possibilities. The script seemed rather weak, a pity as Hanks' acting was very good.
You come away from the movie feeling a wee bit cheated. My feeling is okay, go and see it, but its not something I would rave about
