The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
A great film by one of our best directors....
Movies like this keep me from losing all hope. Wes Anderson's films are extremely personal and poetic. They cannot be defined easily. They are simple and complex at the same time.
Along with Bottle Rocket and Rushmore, this is a film to be watched and re-watched by cinema fans.
In an era where nearly every movie that comes out is a studio blockbuster. It is refreshing to see that someone is still making an attempt to tell stories, for the joy of it.
Along with Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes, and a few others will keep the blood pulsing through this industry which becomes more and more placid by the minute.
Return to Me (2000)
Touching, Hilarious, Sweet film....
I was so pleasantly surprised by, Return to Me. I would reccommend this film to nearly anyone. Carroll O'Connor's performance was beautifully played. And the rest of the cast all perform at top level. This film is a strong and promising debut for Bonnie Hunt, who should take the helm more often. The world needs talented women like her to do more work. I can't say enough about how well she handled this film. Congrats!
Clash of the Titans (1981)
Fun movie, amazing through a childs eyes
My brother and I loved this movie when we were children. We had the toys, and watched the film whenever it was on TV. It was frightening and exciting through a childs eyes. It sparked our imaginations more than most films.
I decided to rent it for nostalgic reasons and it was quite an experience. The FX were considerably worse then I remember but that makes me like the film even more. The acting and script are not great by most peoples standards, but who cares about these people that judge from the sidelines? The stop motion FX are something you could never find in a modern film. It is an imaginative film and it holds up as entertaining to this day. Harry Hamlin may not win an oscar for this, but I think he is great, I wouldn't change a thing.
Lighten up critics, this is a fun and imaginative film. If you hold every film up to Star Wars standards you will be an unhappy film goer. Just enjoy it.
Two Family House (2000)
I don't understand the hype?
I just want to say, I had a friend that worked on this film so I read the script before the movie was released. I found the characters to be very stereo typical. Ex. "The Drunk Irish Man" "The Tough Italian" But I tried to have an open mind and give the screen version a chance. The film is not all bad. The acting is commendable, and the production value is great for the budget, but "Winner of the Audience Award at Sundance"? I don't know, maybe I should watch it again, cause I'm not seeing it.....
The Anniversary Party (2001)
Enjoyable, and innovative comedy/drama
I saw this film at the DGA theater in NYC followed by discussion with the directors. First and foremost, it should be noted that the acting in this film is not improvisational(except for the toasting scene).
This is the best DV film I have seen to date. And it is one of the best films I have seen this year, with a very interesting shooting style(it all takes place in one House/canyon backyard). To make that visually appealing for a sustained amount of time is an achievement in itself. The film hits on many emotions very effectively and is intelligently written, acted, shot, and edited. A real enjoyable film with a great musical back drop.
Gwyneth Paltrow gives a great comedic performance, Parker Posey(who seems to never have a bad performance) is also great. Kevin Kline, Jennifer Beals, Phoebe Cates, John C, reilly are all reason enough to see this film.
++++++++mini spoilers+++++ My favorite part of the film is when, Kevin Kline's son serenades the couple, it was sweet, soft and hilarious. Not to be outdone by the interpretive dance that Kevin and his daughter give during the "toasting scene." Truly personal moments that are forever captured in this film. It was just great, and funny at the same time.
If you are looking for explosions(other than comedic or dramatic) go see a blockbuster. If you are looking for intelligence, grace, and daring filmmaking go see "The Anniversary Party."
Congratulations Alan and Jenifer on a great first feature....
Hannibal (2001)
Hopkins is Terrifying
This is a good film, Anthony Hopkins is frightening once again. I prefer Jodie Foster and the first film but I hate it when people get caught up in those comparisons. This film stands on its own as a good film. Ridley Scott direction, the sets, cinematography, performances and score are all great. The film is hard to watch at times(like watching surgery), and definitely not for the squeamish, but this is what is so intriguing about the film, you can't take your eyes off of it.(3 stars out of 4)
Teen Witch (1989)
Joshua Miller's Greatest performance
This movie is a must see 80's film. Joshua Miller turns in one of the foremost examples of excellence in acting ever captured on celluloid. He acts circles around Robyn Lively and the rest of the cast. The film is not a masterpiece, but his scenes are worth sitting through the weakest of cheesy scenes. Zelda Rubinstein also turns in a noteworthy performance.
Frat House (1998)
Excellent Documentary, shame on the censors
I was fortunate enough to get a hold of a VHS copy of this amazing documentary for a short span of time last year. I think I watched it about 10 times over the course of the week because I kept screening it for friends. This documentary exposes the brutal lack of individuality that breeds on college campus' everywhere. Watch as countless whitebread freshmen beg, bite, and steal for acceptance. These fools will do anything to be a part of the in crowd. The star of the show, Blossom, deserves his own series. His scenes can only be described as, Larry, Moe and Curly all wrapped into one living on a creatine/steroid diet. This documentary is a must see, and Todd Phillips narrations are well done. Its too bad that the frat boys got there daddys lawyers involved, otherwise the work of these two filmmakers would play to the audience it deserves.
