Star Trek: Enterprise (2001–2005)
A daring attempt
28 September 2005
The prequel attempt is not new to the world of movies, but as far a series goes, it's actually quite revolutionary. In general, series continue forward in time, and I think that coming up with the idea for and producing a prequel series is the result of some very out-of-the-box thinking. That having been said, I don't particularly care for the series. I think that it lacks the feel of star trek, and I don't get the same sense of pride from these new characters as I did on Voyager or TNG. I do believe, however, that the base spirit is still alive and well, exploring the unknown and doing what has never been done. I believe that this is the true greatness behind the whole star trek series: It challenges people to think beyond what they know, and look towards what could be. In that way, the series is successful, and I think that is a large reason why the series has made it as far as it has. Again though, I think the series lacks the actual "feel" of star trek in the way the cast behaves and handles situations. I have never been much of a Scott Bakula fan, but I was more than willing to give series a shot and was disappointed. Bottom line: a bold attempt that kept the spirit of exploration alive but required better acting and writing that it was given.

Agent Orange (2004)

Short silent love story between a girl who has lost her goldfish and a boy.

I thought that movie was a good attempt at directing and incorporating many of the products sold on Amazon.com. Unfortunately, it was just that. Throughout the movie, all of the shots were choppy and jumped around, a cool effect if used properly (which it wasn't here). This effect is great for occasional jumps and was good for when the train pulled out of the station and when the two made eye contact, but it felt out of place and annoying for the rest of the film. Also, there was no dialogue throughout the entire movie. Although this isn't necessarily a problem, the one time that there should have been dialogue it was replaced with corny cartoonish bubbles above the actor's heads. So unfortunately, I cannot say that I was overly pleased with this attempt at a short film. Oh well. I would however suggest amazon's first short film, the portrait, with Minnie Driver. It gets two big thumbs up from me.
