Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
Vraiment Fabuleux
I hate to sound ridiculous...but this film, the girl Amelie, she truly "changed my life." Okay, not a complete alteration, but for one moment... for one moment, I was flying. This film is incredible. The texture is rich, the actions so deliberate and enjoyable to watch, the dialogue is almost unnecessary. This film tore me to pieces and stitched me together again, set my heart to pounding and my eyes to welling over. It is at once hilarious and heartthuddingly magical. I love Amelie. I recommend her to you, and I hope you find a bit of the magnificence I experienced.
Newsies (1992)
Headlines don't sell papes...NEWSIES sell papes!
I....love this movie! Quite a varied and extensive selection of eye candy (even for someone way too old for these hottie boys), terribly catchy and well orchestrated music, and a plot with a cause worth fighting for! The dancing is SO irresistible and...enticing? What can I say...group synchronized dancing boys and slow-mo walking guys are both my weaknesses.
Okay, so I'm drooling...also, I love the authenticity of the costuming in the movies...they all have really cute dirty outfits and greasy hair...you see movies with girls in survival situations, yet with perfect hair. Not quite accurate. I find the grease and grime somewhat refreshing.
Did I mention Christian Bale is so sexy? Forget him now, he was at his best as a teen.
Yeah, I love this movie. The "weighted average" of imdb is completely unfair...most everyone gave this a 10, me included...it deserves at least an 8.5. If you need more persuasion than can be found in similar rave reviews, here's my advice: SEE THIS MOVIE NOW. Especially if you are female. You will enjoy it. I promise.
Sensation (1994)
Oh my...
I think that this is a very icky movie. Too much flesh and not enough acting. Another reviewer thought Kari Wuhrer did a good acting job...um, no. It was good to begin with, and then in the end she turned into B-movie actress of the year. Plus the movie makes no sense. And what is with the ceiling fans? Really, skip this one if you are considering it.
The Patriot (2000)
An emotional rollercoaster, and worth it!
I don't know...everyone seems to be either totally for this movie or totally against it. I liked it a lot. I try, rather than searching mercilessly for acting/directing/writing mistakes or atrocities, to just simply watch the movie and lose myself in its fantasy. If I have a hard time doing that, then the movie is bad and I don't recommend it. However, I found this movie to be very moving and I definitely got swept up in the plot and action. I would recommend it to everyone, although not everyone seems to enjoy it. After having seen it, I felt like finding the guy I have a crush on and spontaneously giving him kiss and becoming a better American. This movie definitely puts one in a patriotic mood. Okay. The guy...Heath Ledger. Total hottie. I should say any teenage girl who has yet to see this needs to, just so she can drool. Not to mention the fact that Mel Gibson is his dad (another total hottie). And both these guys are EXCELLENT actors, which is even better. But aside from that fact, this is a GOOD movie. Go see it.
I thought it was worth it for sure.
The Princess Bride (1987)
My very favorite movie...
I love this movie. The artistic camera shots, the humor, the acting, the fantasy, the music... it's my all-time favorite. I think everyone has to see this movie at least once in their life... I don't know how many times I've seen it! If you need a suggestion for a great movie to rent sometime when you're bored, GET THIS ONE. You can't be disappointed!!!
Mission: Impossible II (2000)
Leaves a bit to be desired
I was worried as I headed into the theatre. Last time I tackled one of these Mission: Impossible movies my comprehension of the plot turned into my own impossible mission. I'm an eighteen year old girl, I don't get all this spy stuff. Yeah, I'm pretty much there to see Tom Cruise. I tried enjoying the last plot, but I was confused beyond "duh." So, I sat down and decided to do my best with what I was given. And surprise! I got it! Of course, understanding the plot does not mean that the movie had me at the edge of my seat. In fact, the plot was rather tired by the time it reached me, seeing as how it had paraded through countless other movies and novels. But! I was still entertained for the two hours. The stunts and music kept me happy, and I remained puzzled throughout the film wondering how a person could actually have such perfect skin (thank you Thandie). So-- the idea is of an impossible mission. I should think if a director or writer wished to show how the fabulous Ethan Hunt could carry out the impossible mission, he would try to make everything as realistic as possible to amaze the fans. However. This one ranks up there with Star Trek in the realism department. Instead of glorifying the spy techniques of Ethan Hunt, it expounds upon Tom Cruise's Kung Fu fighting moves. Who cares if he could really disguise himself as the bad guy in twenty seconds or less and get away with it? He had makeup artists! And a very imaginative writer. Wait and rent this one, unless you wish to enjoy Tom or Thandie on the big screen. Entertaining, but leaves one saying "Yeah right."
