Le pacte des loups (2001)
Dangerous liaisons meets Enter the dragon!
If you thought that French movies were slow, boring and serious, this film is going to make you change your mind. Christophe Gans, the director, loves mangas, video games and Hong Kong movies and, wow, you can see it on the screen. From the story of the beast of Gevaudan (a mysterious animal which killed more than 100 persons in the 18th century), Gans creates a strange and yet successful mixture of genres, from the historical drama to the video-game, from the epic romance to the martial arts flick. The film is not perfect (maybe a little too long, some special effects are not so good) but you will not see such a cocktail elsewhere. 8/10.
Faccia a faccia (1967)
a clever reflection about violence
An excellent spaghetti western, much more intelligent than what you could expect. Between the two "heroes", the worst is not the dirty desperado but the educated teacher, who becomes more and more "addicted" to violence, power and cruelty. A real reflection, with an excellent script, good direction and brilliant actors.
La bouche de Jean-Pierre (1996)
Shocking, but necessary
A ten year old girl is received by her aunt because of her mother's confinement to a mental hospital. But the aunt lives with a man, Jean-Pierre, who seems to be a little too nice with the girl...
Pedophilia is not an easy subject, especially for a movie. But thanks to the great intelligence of the visual style, and the script, La bouche de Jean-Pierre (in English: Jean-Pierre's mouth) is one of the best films about pedophilia, without excessive pathos. Actors are amazing, especially the little girl.
